Flamenco: Made in the USA?! An Evening of Flamenco Performance and Round-Table Discussion on Authenticity and Cultural Assimilation/Appropriation in Flamenco

July 4, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

$10 – $20
Melissa Cruz E1432694216979

Hosted by Melissa Cruz, this round table discussion with panelists from diverse disciplines will delve into the world of assimilation and appropriation as it relates to flamenco. The evening will culminate in a post-talk performance by Melissa and Matiz Flamenco.

Is there room for an “American Style Flamenco” or will American flamenco artists continually seek authentication from Spain and Gypsies? As outsiders are we always limited to mimicry? Or can we assimilate without “disrespectful” appropriation? What is purity in an art form? For those interested in flamenco or other ethnic arts and have opinion and questions, this is your forum – audience participation is desirable!

Hosted and moderated by Melissa Cruz, a professional full-time flamenco dancer and instructor. Followed by a live ensemble performance by Matiz Flamenco, whose members come from diverse, non-Spanish and non-gypsy heritage.

Featuring:
