February 1st MAPP: MAKE LOVE NOT WAR / Haz el amor y no la guerra

February 1, 2020 @ 4:33 pm - 10:00 pm

Free

Launched in 2003, the Mission Arts & Performance Project (MAPP) is a homegrown bi-monthly, multidisciplinary, intercultural happening that takes place in the Mission District of San Francisco. On the first Saturday of every even month of the year, the MAPP transforms ordinary spaces, such as private garages, gardens, living rooms, studios, street corners, and small businesses into pop-up performance and exhibition sites for a day/night of intimate-scale artistic and cultural exchange among a kaleidoscope of individuals and communities.

ABOUT THE PROJECTS & ARTISTS

The workshop will begin with a presentation outlining the historical and conceptual basis for visual poetry and introducing exemplars of “vispo” works. Participants will be invited to play with words and create a community “Dream Catcher Poem”. Each participant will create a feather poem; which will be assembled into a dream catcher, weaving together the visual narratives that emerge. An array of tools and materials will be provided, including but not limited to stencils, and other writing instruments, such as pens, pencils, markers.
Poets, visual artists, and general public are encouraged to participate.

Mara Patricia Hernandez is a Mexican visual poet, digital artist, and designer; who creates multifaceted visual poetry. In her work, she combines both digital and traditional techniques, her attention to the form of a letter or the shaping of a word places language and text at the tactile and metaphoric center of her work.
