Leaning toward a bebop aesthetic, Adam Shulman and his band adapt Billy Strayhorn’s repertoire to a small ensemble with an emphasis on soloing and spontaneous group interaction. The music of Strayhorn is lyrical and dramatic with an underpinning of great harmonic depth. Refreshing in an age in jazz where angular and heady music seems to predominate, he succeeds in being both cerebral and soulful at the same time.
