VidyA: South Indian Classical Meets Jazz
August 19, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
$15 – $20The Red Poppy is proud to welcome back our original resident artists, VidyA, who will present an evening of their characteristically seamless blend of Carnatic and jazz music with saxophone, bass, and drums. Having approached this music deeply for years together, the separate idioms dissolve as the group dwells and expresses in the essence itself. At this, their first show in years, expect material from the ensemble’s latest album, In the Source, as well as old favorites and new works.
Featuring:
Prasant Radhakrishnan – saxophone
David Ewell – bass
Sameer Gupta – drums
VidyA is well known for creating original music steeped in the musical languages of South Indian Carnatic music and jazz. They’ve been featured at venues such as SFJazz, San Jose Jazz, Yoshi’s, Asian American Film Festival, and Recontraire Internationale in France. Radhakrishnan’s original compositions for VidyA have been commissioned by the de Young Museum via the Jazz at Intersection series and awarded the Zellerbach Family Fund and SFFCM grant, among others.
