The Art of the Duo: Kathy Kosins & Adam Shulman

August 28, 2014 @ 7:30 am - 10:00 pm

$15 – $20
Kathy Kosins Adam Schulman

Harmonious Jazz Collaboration

Kathy Kosins and Adam Shulman bring to the Poppy a musical conversation between voice, piano, and visual art, presenting material from Kosins’ 5 internationally acclaimed CD’s, including a few selections from her forthcoming soul infused jazz album, to be released in Spring of 2015. Showcasing her talents as an abstract artist, Kosins will also be painting live on stage, an act of canvas improvisation, inspired by the piano work of Shulman. The pieces created will then be auctioned off post-performance. The fluent blend of voice, piano, and paint harvests a multi-media presentation carefully crafted by the resplendent partnership of Kathy Kosins and Adam Shulman.

Kathy Kosins – Detroit born vocalist Kathy Kosins is an ASCAP award winning songwriter, record producer and recognized modern abstract painter, influenced by the cubist paintings of the ’50s, both commissioning and selling originals at galleries. Kathy has toured internationally and shared the stage with numerous names in the Jazz and R&B world, a few notables being Cyrus Chestnut, James Moody, Kevin Mahogany, Greg Hutchinson, Jesse Davis, Bruce Foreman, Mitch Ryder to name a few.

“She thinks like a musician’ is one of the finest compliments you can give a jazz vocalist, and Detroit native Kathy Kosins is often at the receiving end of that vocalist.” -Jon Norton, WGLT Music Director

Adam Shulman – A staple of the San Francisco Jazz scene since he moved to the city in 2002, Adam Shulman honed his musical skills at UC Santa Cruz where he studied with acclaimed pianists Smith Dobson and Maria Ezerova. Adam plays regularly with Marcus Shelby and Anton Schwartz, and leads two of his own groups, one featuring original compositions and the other dedicated to the music of Billy Strayhorn. Both groups have performed extensively in the Bay Area at major jazz venues including Yoshis, Stanford Jazz Workshop Concert Series and the Hillside Club.
