SUMMARY:Ashley Broder Trio: Original Chamber Folk
DESCRIPTION:Renowned instrumentalists Ashley Broder\, Ben Schreiber\, and Aria DiSalvio join forces to perform Broder’s originals and some traditional fiddle favorites. Mandolin\, electric mandolin\, fiddle\, and cello weave melodies\, textures\, and harmonies to create a sound that has been described as cinematic and transportive.\n \nFEATURING:\nAshley Broder – mandolin\, electric mandolin\, fiddle\nBen Schreiber – fiddle\nAria DiSalvio – cello\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nSouthern California-based composer and instrumentalist Ashley Broder is fluent on mandolin (both acoustic and electric)\, violin\, and cello. She crafts melodies\, sonic textures\, and haunting harmonies that distinguish her works easily from the norm. Her original compositions draw inspiration from an eclectic range of genres\, including folk\, jazz\, classical\, pop\, and rock. Classically trained in violin as a child\, Broder discovered the mandolin at age eight\, then took up the cello in college. She has been described as a “mandolin phenomenon” by the San Diego Tribune and is sought after by a wide range of musicians needing to round out their sound. \nBen Schreiber is a contra-dance fiddler and tune-writer\, native to St Louis but currently living in the San Francisco Bay Area. He plays fiddle in several dance bands and is known for his driving energy and lyrical stylings. Schreiber began playing the violin at the age of three and was classically trained. Around the age of 12\, he shifted his focus to folk music. After a brief foray into the world of competitive bluegrass\, he became drawn towards the contra-dance community and eventually formed several local Midwest bands. In addition to contra-dance music\, Schreiber also plays for English Country Dancing and was a member of the klezmer band Yidn. \nAria Disalvio has extensive experience as a performer\, teacher\, and recording artist. She performs regularly with chamber groups including Trio Dagabo and New Music Works\, as well as being a lead cellist in the San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers\, led by master Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser and folk trio One Lane Bridge. A teacher for over 12 years\, Disalvio shares her passion for music with students of all ages in her private cello studio in Santa Cruz\, as well as at Sierra Fiddle Camp and The Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School. \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show\nAdmission: $15-20 sliding scale. SUMMARY:Édessa: Balkan\, Armenian & Turkish Music
DESCRIPTION:A rare night of music presented by Édessa\, the Balkan dance band explores a different repertoire from the Balkans\, Turkey\, and Armenia.\n \nFEATURING:\nGeorge Chittenden – clarinet\, guitar\nAri Langer – violin\nLise Liepman – santouri\, accordion\nSean Tergis – darabuka\, defi\, tupan\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nÉdessa captures the passion and vitality that is at the heart of Balkan music\, playing the intricate time signatures and highly ornamented modal music that is characteristic of the Balkans with authority and joy. An understanding of the distinct connection between this music and its expression in Balkan dance informs the ensemble’s performances and derives from decades-long involvement as both musicians and dancers. Using both traditional and modern instruments\, their style interweaves the ancient and mesmerizing sounds of the zurna and davul; the lyrical and sweet melodies of the Greek islands; the haunting\, trance-like pentatonic tunes of Epirus; and—at the other end of the acoustic spectrum—contemporary Bulgarian wedding music. Édessa travels nationally and internationally and is in constant demand for events ranging from American-style folk dance camps\, workshops\, and parties\, to a variety of ethnic celebrations including Greek Glendi (festival)\, Roma spring celebrations\, Armenian parties\, Kurdish wedding celebrations\, and Bulgarian national holidays. \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show\nAdmission: $15-20 sliding scale.
