Utilizing both historical and modern instruments\, they perform an uncommon repertoire for guitar and voice. Nimbly navigating different eras and genres\, they take care to investigate and highlight stylistic differences in each using the full range and capability of their instruments\, including 19th century guitar\, lute\, tenor banjo\, and modern classical guitar. (Photo by: Matthew Washburn) \nA versatile singer\, Melinda Becker enjoys performing a multi-faceted repertoire\, from Baroque cantatas and Spanish and Ladino art songs\, to soul and other popular music styles. She recently performed as the alto soloist in Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9” with Classical Revolution Orchestra and frequently collaborates with many Bay Area ensembles and musicians\, most recently the Musical Art Quintet\, Phonochrome\, Oakland-based jazz band RDL+\, and Iranian singer Mahsa Vahdat. Active with several chamber groups\, Melinda is a member of Renegade Duo with guitarist Jon Mendle and Liaison Ensemble\, a female Baroque quartet bringing historically informed performances to a wide range of audiences in non-traditional venues. \nClassical guitarist Jon Mendle has performed around the country since his Carnegie Hall debut at age 19 and has drawn widespread praise for his virtuosity and musicianship. SUMMARY:Portrait Maker + Girl Swallows Nightingale: Chamber Music for Improvisers
DESCRIPTION:Roger Kim’s Portrait Maker is a new kind of chamber music that combines elements of jazz\, classical\, and folk music in a highly personal and organic way. Writing for plucked and bowed string instruments\, woodwinds\, flute\, voices\, and sparse percussion and piano\, the young guitarist makes his mark as a promising composer with a wonderful sense for unusual orchestration and timbres\, musical economy\, harmonic richness\, melodic beauty\, and improvisational creativity. Girl Swallows Nightingale opens the night\, taking the audience on a cinematic journey.\n \nFEATURING:\nPortrait Maker\nRoger Kim – guitar\, banjo\nRyan Pate – guitar\nMarica Petrey – vocals\nAndrea Wang – vocals\nDebbie Gold – flute\nJason Gillenwater – clarinet\nKyle Beard – bass clarinet \nGirl Swallows Nightingale\nMarica Petrey – vocals\nAndrea Wang – vocals\, piano\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nRoger Kim is a guitarist and composer whose work investigates the intersections of rhythm\, harmony\, orchestration\, improvisation\, and the juxtaposition of various disciplines including music\, dance\, and visual media. He has presented work all over the San Francisco Bay Area\, including at the New Frequencies Festival at YBCA and with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players Ensemble. He studied with Myra Melford at UC Berkeley and is currently working on an MFA in music performance and composition at the California Institute of the Arts. \nGirl Swallows Nightingale hatched in 2016 when Marica Petrey accidentally wrote too much music for a fantasy film she was making and decided that it was the perfect excuse to start a new band. With songwriting inspired by folklore\, anime\, science fiction\, and epic saga\, Girl Swallows Nightingale conjures a cinematic experience\, painting a vivid musical canvas that shifts its colors between modern rock\, jazz\, theater\, funk\, and pop\, to underwater soundscapes and dreams of outer space. Petrey delivers dramatic yet playful vocals and is supported by a multi-talented ensemble of musicians\, who can be found not only on stage with a number of other bands and orchestras\, but also at work all over the Bay Area in the realms of theater\, film\, video games\, and radio. \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: Doors 7:00PM / Show 7:30PM\nAdmission: $15-20 sliding scale. Ticket availability at the door is limited and contingent on online sales.\nPurchase advance tickets for this event:\n \nRSVP to the Facebook event:\n \n \n  \nVolunteer for this event!\n\n
