FEATURING:
Noémy Braun – cellist

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Sergiu Popa was born in Chisinau, Moldova. From a young age, he studied traditional folk and Roma (Gypsy) music with his father, Ion Popa (a well-recognized Gypsy accordionist in Moldova, Turkish, Serbian, Bulgarian and Russian music). After moving to Montreal in 2002, Sergiu immersed himself into Middle Eastern and North African repertoire. He is widely celebrated for his ability to seamlessly bend these different styles of music. He has collaborated with many of the great names in Eastern European and Balkan music, such as Dan Armeanca, Carmen Piculeata, Fanfara Ciocarlia, Vadim Kolpakov, and Petar Ralchev.
In this exceptional show, Sergiu will be joined by several guest artists for different parts of the performance, including: Noémy Braun — a cellist since the age of five, Noémy Braun has collaborated on numerous projects in classical, contemporary, jazz and various regions of the world. A great improviser, she is active on the musical stages of Canada and Europe.
Khatchadour Khatchadourian – vocalist grounded in the musical traditions of the Middle East and Armenia, and a Duduk woodwind player based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Rumen Shopov – singer, multi-instrumentalist, and music teacher Rumen Sali Shopov born and raised in the Turkish/Muslim Romani (Gypsy) mahala (neighborhood) of Gotse Delchev, a crossroads in Southwestern Bulgaria’s Pirin Mountain region.
Valy Lautar – violinist graduated from the Conservatory of Moldova, worked for five years as a musician on transatlantic cruise lines, before permanently settling in the new world. Valy specialized in a wide array of styles of music, including traditional music from Moldova and other parts of Eastern Europe.
