Rob Reich Quintet: Shadowbox: Accordion-Led Evocative Chamber Jazz
February 19, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
$10 – $20Accordion player and pianist Rob Reich is quintessentially what makes the San Francisco music scene a vibrant and vital mecca for independent music; he’s become one of its stalwart underground artists. Shadowbox, the musician’s debut album, marks a fully-realized collection of original compositions. The tunes branch off from his work with revered Bay Area ensemble Tin Hat Trio, mixing improvisational romps with refined and melodic ensemble arrangements. Doses of wry humor and elements of spontaneous revelation keep the music characteristically Reich, whose idiosyncratic accordion prowess helps propel the instrument’s modern renaissance.
Featuring:
Rob Reich ‒ accordion, piano
Ila Cantor ‒ guitar
Ben Goldberg ‒ clarinets
Eric Garland ‒ drums
Colin McCuen ‒ bass
“Rob Reich has carved out a niche as a premier avant-roots voice.” … “Like a funhouse mirror, the merriment is refracted in odd, distorting ways, as the band keep the tones sharp and slightly askew. Like the best carnival attractions, it scares you just enough to make you want to visit it again.” …”like Nino Rota writing for a small jazz group.” ‒ JAZZIZ Magazine
“Reich creates soundscapes brimming with half-buried feelings and memories just out of reach.”
‒ Andrew Gilbert, KQED
