Primary Colors: Harp, Saxophone & Percussion Trio

$15 – $20Blending elements from their own musical upbringings with influences from Spain, Brazil, Venezuela, and other Latin American countries, Los Angeles-based Primary Colors focuses on original compositions and arrangements. At their first Red Poppy show, expect to hear selections from their upcoming debut album.

Josh Johnson is an alto/soprano saxophonist and composer recognized for his unique sound and captivating approach to improvisation. He has performed with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Lalah Hathaway, Robert Hurst, Esperanza Spalding, and Aretha Franklin. He is a graduate of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance and has received numerous awards, including the 2015 ASCAP Young Jazz Composer award for his composition “Remember Forgot” and 1st place in the Civic and Arts Foundation’s Jazz Composition Competition for “Comrade Napoleon.”
Percussionist Ryan Knudsen can be found playing weekly with legendary blues guitarist Pete Anderson, traveling and playing with the swinging blues/rock outfit Slim Jenkins, all over the country with the Los Alamitos High School show choir program, and hosting his own podcast, “Ryan is Super Strong!” Ryan has studied with percussion mentors Steve Houghton, Michael Spiro, and Kevin Bobo and has lead groups like the Media Noche Trio and recorded with artists such as Sylvia McNair. Ryan currently teaches at Mater Dei Catholic High School, Los Alamitos High School, and the Silverlake Conservatory of Music.
Harpist, singer, and composer Liza Wallace brings a new dimension to the harp’s role in contemporary music. Originally from San Francisco, CA, she has traveled around the world to study, teach, and perform, most recently touring in Mexico, Brazil, and Germany. She has performed and recorded with such artists as Sir Elton John, the Dear Hunter, Kristin Chenoweth, Gonzola Grau, Pablo Aslan, and frequently performs with the San Francisco Bay Area’s Awesöme Orchestra Collective. A noted composer and arranger for the harp, Liza has released two albums of her music.
