Portrait Maker + Girl Swallows Nightingale: Chamber Music for Improvisers
March 29, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
$15 – $20Roger Kim’s Portrait Maker is a new kind of chamber music that combines elements of jazz, classical, and folk music in a highly personal and organic way. Writing for plucked and bowed string instruments, woodwinds, flute, voices, and sparse percussion and piano, the young guitarist makes his mark as a promising composer with a wonderful sense for unusual orchestration and timbres, musical economy, harmonic richness, melodic beauty, and improvisational creativity. ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Roger Kim is a guitarist and composer whose work investigates the intersections of rhythm, harmony, orchestration, improvisation, and the juxtaposition of various disciplines including music, dance, and visual media. He has presented work all over the San Francisco Bay Area, including at the New Frequencies Festival at YBCA and with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players Ensemble. He studied with Myra Melford at UC Berkeley and is currently working on an MFA in music performance and composition at the California Institute of the Arts.
Girl Swallows Nightingale hatched in 2016 when Marica Petrey accidentally wrote too much music for a fantasy film she was making and decided that it was the perfect excuse to start a new band. With songwriting inspired by folklore, anime, science fiction, and epic saga, Girl Swallows Nightingale conjures a cinematic experience, painting a vivid musical canvas that shifts its colors between modern rock, jazz, theater, funk, and pop, to underwater soundscapes and dreams of outer space. Petrey delivers dramatic yet playful vocals and is supported by a multi-talented ensemble of musicians, who can be found not only on stage with a number of other bands and orchestras, but also at work all over the Bay Area in the realms of theater, film, video games, and radio.
