Arab Soul and Genre Expansive Music

Naima Shalhoub presents the music of Siphr featuring co-collaborator Excentrik and 5-piece band. Siphr, Naima’s debut studio record, was released in August of 2020 that is comprised of nine compositions, each one representing various aspects of revolution and humanity’s need for liberation. Instrumentation includes oud, cello, guitars, keys, vocals, drums, percussion and bass. Join us for an uplifting evening of community and a journey through the Siphr.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: 

Naima Shalhoub is a Lebanese-American vocalist, composer, performer, guitarist, pianist, band leader and arranger who blends jazz, blues, Arab musicality and hip hop to create genre-bending and border-defying sounds.

Naima has opened for scholars and musicians such as Angela Davis, Cornel West, Zap Mama, and Les Nubians. Her music has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, Al Jazeera, The Mercury News, KQED, East Bay Express, KALW, Upworthy, Pop Matters, San Francisco Classical Voice, Electronic Intifada and Arab News.

Naima has risen to prominence in the global music scene as an interdisciplinary artist and restorative justice leader.

Excentrik, Born in California and raised between working class Detroit and the constantly evolving political and cultural landscape of Oakland, Palestinian producer, multi-instrumentalist and MC Tarik “Excentrik” Kazaleh is best known for his oud and percussion-driven beats, political vitriol and passionate lyrics. Considered one of the early founders of Arab-American Hip-Hop, his diverse discography includes the revolutionary Hip Hop group Arab Summit (alongside Omar Offendum, Narcy and Ragtop), multiple film scores, the experimental Jazz trio The 3 Mohammads, and many more. Excentrik’s last solo album, Now Here, Nowhere is a multi-genre attempt at diversifying what Arab Hip Hop has been defined as.

To make the event a safe and comfortable one for all, Red Poppy will be strictly enforcing COVID-19 Vaccine and Mask requirements. Please note that we will NOT make any exceptions. All guests will be required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccinations (2 doses + 1 booster at least) and a photo ID at the door to gain entry and wear a face mask properly at all time inside the space.
