SUMMARY:Zhu Zhuye maman: Sculpture Show & Interactive Performance
DESCRIPTION:This sculpture exhibition and performance honors the artist’s lost baby\, Zhubin. The sculptures\, created shortly after the death of the artist’s newborn baby\, reflect the feelings she was going through as a mom losing her child\, transforming the pain to pieces of sculpture. \n“Dakheel”\nWe are in a continuous repetitive world. All beings are in a constant cycle of birth and death. Life comes out of death and death comes after life. What makes our moments worth living is love\, compassion\, and unity. In the interactive performance\, the artist will be playing a repetitive rhythm with the Iranian percussion instrument daf. Guests are welcome any time between 6:00pm – 9:00pm. They are invited to interact with the performance either by improvising a song\, playing their choice of musical instrument\, or by tearing a piece from the bottom of the long dress that the artist will be wearing\, writing a wish on it and re-attaching it to the dress. The tradition of the wishing tree is common in several countries including Iran.\n \nFEATURING:\nRayyaneh Karami – daf\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nRayyaneh Karami has always been involved in multimedia art\, especially painting and sculpting. Her work has been showcased at many galleries in California\, Seattle\, and in Iran. She learned and played daf in Tehran under the supervision of Mr. Eshaghi. Movement\, sound\, and colors introduce the evening with a synesthetic experience. In Conversation with Dance gathers a series of works developed starting from a boundaries-free dialogue of Noe with the atavistic force of movement. The artist and the curator will be present during the opening reception.\n \n“Space is not a static\, inert thing. Space is alive; space is dynamic; space is imbued with movement expressed by forces and counterforce; space vibrates and resounds with color\, light\, and form in the rhythm of life.” — Hans Hoffmann \nMovement can manifest in many forms—slow\, active\, regular\, wild\, linear\, syncopated. Even when we see no movement outside\, there is still a fire dancing inside of us. Since it ensues transformation (it’s the arrow that propels man into the future)\, movement is life. \nNoe’s art is the fascinating encounter between two different forms of movement\, apparently distant: the movement within the space and the movement on a canvas. As co-creator of a synesthetic experience\, alongside dancers and musicians\, Noe engages in a romantic conversation with dynamic energies. She is open to an improvisational dialogue with the participants. None of the participants know how the piece will develop nor how it will conclude. Their trust in the atavistic force of movement will guide them through a path built on unexpected gestures. \nColors and lines impress the dialectic forms of movement onto the canvas\, in an attempt to record the impermanent art of dance. While portraying the dancers’ movement\, Noe pours the emptiness and the fullness of space into the bi-dimensional experience of live painting. \nThe cross-pollination of the arts manifesting within Noe’s works suggests that a collective dialogue is more healing than a monologue\, that feeling is more effective than listening\, and that the experiences we live include many main characters\, beside us. Finally\, the sense of connection is the sound that keeps our own life moving on a shared stage. \n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nElla Noe was born to Romanian parents in Israel and raised in four different countries in South America. As an adult\, she lived in Spain\, England\, and Romania\, finally landing in San Francisco 16 years ago. Her connection to the Bay Area has been critical to her art. Her working experience includes youth from a wide diversity of backgrounds—from Bedouin children in Israel to adolescent orphans in Romania. In the Bay Area\, Noe has worked as a photography and art teacher for organizations such as MOCHA\, MCCLA\, and Red Poppy Art House. She was part of the San Francisco Studio School of Painting\, Drawing\, Photography and Mixed Media for over 10 years. \nNoe believes our experiences in life shape who we are as artists. The search for movement in her work and the need to piece together elements from different areas to create a new reality comes from a constant moving from place to place and the disquiet of not having roots anywhere. This led Noe to have a very rich life in experience\, and also constant questioning of belonging\, of a search for depth\, of connection of creating something that is greater than the sum of all the parts and all the experiences.\n \nARTIST STATEMENT:\nMy passion in life is creating movement\, which is quite a paradox for an artist that works on the static medium of paint and canvas. I also love dancing myself\, and my time dancing has inspired my work as a painter. I have been fascinated by dancers and wanted to experiment with capturing the energy and movement of dance onto the canvas. I had no rigid vision for an outcome\, I just wanted to co-create an experiment in movement and expression\, and invited a dancer into my studio to play with the idea of generating a conversation that would bounce off the dance floor onto my canvas and back. \nWe listened to each other’s sounds: music\, yes\, but also words\, gestures\, brushstrokes\, and fed from one another’s expression and energy to learn about where movement generates\, why we long to express it\, and the dialectic between the paint and the pose\, the pigment\, and prancing. \n  \nClassical Revolution\nChamber Music\n \nClassical Revolution was founded in the fall of 2006 with the goal of making classical chamber more relevant in our neighborhoods and communities. After a successful first year of weekly shows at Revolution Cafe in San Francisco’s Mission District\, the organization began to receive invitations to perform at other local venues including Amnesia and Red Poppy Art House\, soon to be followed by the Legion of Honor and de Young Museum\, and then places like Yoshi’s SF and Herbst Theater. In its 10th anniversary year\, Classical Revolution undertook a cycle of Beethoven’s 9 Symphonies\, performed at venues around San Francisco including de Young Museum\, Fort Mason’s Cowell Theater\, and a performance of the 9th Symphony at Grace Cathedral in front of a 1\,000-person audience. \nPress articles from The New York Times\, Strings Magazine\, Wall Street Journal\, and The Economist brought wider attention to Classical Revolution’s efforts. As interest grew outside of San Francisco\, the network of chapters began to develop\, with over 40 cities hosting Classical Revolution around the U.S.\, Canada\, Europe\, Australia\, as well as Indonesia\, Argentina\, South Korea\, and Japan. Over 1\,000 musicians have performed at more than 1\,200 Classical Revolution events in over 125 different venues in the Bay Area alone.\n \nFEATURING:\nCharith Premawardhana – violin\, guitar\nElektra Schmidt – piano\nScot Moore – violin\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nOriginally from Athens\, Greece\, pianist Elektra Schmidt studied in Paris and is currently based in San Francisco. She enjoys performing chamber music as well as solo piano in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. Schmidt serves on the staff for Red Poppy Art House and performs regularly for Classical Revolution events\, as well as Flower Piano each summer at the San Francisco Botanical Gardens. \n  \nVox Tremolo\nOriginal Dance Music\n \nVox Tremolo (“the voice that trembles”) is the brainchild of bassist and composer Joe Lewis. Vox & Co. plays original music for the people—music for your imagination and your hips. This performance anticipates Lewis’ monthly residency at Revolution Cafe\, showcasing new original grooves and compositions.\n \nFEATURING:\nSpencer Owens – guitar\nJoe Lewis – bass\nSam Jones – drums\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nJoe Lewis is known to many as the godfather of Revolution Cafe’s beloved music program. His numerous collaborations include extensive work with groups such as fpodbpod\, Family Folk Explosion\, and Quinn DeVeaux. A Bay Area native\, Lewis has been working and living in the Mission District for well over a decade\, including a brief yet highly productive stint as proprietor and curator of Blue Six Acoustic Music Room on 24th Street. \n  \nShimmering Leaves\nExperimental Improvisation\n \nLed by percussionist and cultural sensei Dave Mihaly\, Shimmering Leaves is a semi-rotating group of some of the Bay Area’s most prominent creative musical minds performing original compositions and improvisations. Folkloric\, futuristic\, extemporaneous\, poetic\, painterly\, tender\, and pugilistic\, Shimmering Leaves has released four recordings and performs regularly around the Bay Area and beyond.\n \nFEATURING:\nDavid Boyce – saxophone\nCharith Premawardhana – viola\nJoe Lewis – bass\nDave Mihaly – percussion\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nDave Mihaly is a San Francisco-based composer and bandleader. He has played in many groups in the SF Bay Area and NYC and has performed all over the U.S.\, Canada\, Europe\, China\, Australia\, and  New Zealand. Shimmering Leaves is a project he started in 2001 to feature his original compositions\, songs\, and sonic strategies. The most recent ensemble record\, Light in the Ring\, the Ali Suite\, features David Boyce and Michael Cavaseno on the Calar label. Mihaly also appears with the group Unbound Worlds’ album Chengdu Dream\, recorded at the He Duoling Museum in Chengdu\, China. \nSan Francisco-based saxophonist David Boyce is well known for his ultra-kinetic musicality as a member of Sameer Gupta’s free jazz group the Supplicants\, legendary jazz/hip hop trio The Broun Fellinis\, and numerous other Bay Area bands. \n  \nABOUT THE CURATORS\n \nElena Mencarelli (visual art exhibition) is an artist and freelance curator. After having graduated with a master’s in visual arts from the University of Bologna (Italy) in 2016\, she moved to San Francisco and has since collaborated with Red Poppy Art House Exhibitions. She had previously worked for gallery60six in SF\, artist Anne Nowak\, Spazio Testoni\, and Spazio Nour. From 2013 to 2014\, Mencarelli was the artistic director of Make Your Mark Art Gallery in Melbourne\, AU. Her work was published in Make Your Mark Art Magazine (2013) and in the catalogue of the dual exhibition of M. R. Ballestra and Alan Sonfist—A Better Landscape (2016). Mencarelli is also the author of the essay Maria Rebecca Ballestra\, A Phenomenology of Posthumanism (Mimesis Editore\, 2019). Born in Sri Lanka\, raised in Chicago\, and residing in San Francisco since 2004\, he studied at Oberlin Conservatory\, Rice University\, and San Francisco Conservatory. Premawardhana is proficient in the violin\, viola\, and guitar\, having played all three instruments since an early age. His experience gained in running Classical Revolution has led to a keen interest in fostering a vibrant network of musicians\, which he draws from in contracting concert appearances with performers such as Foreigner\, Evanescence\, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes\, and Pritam Chakraborty. He has recorded on dozens of albums including for the Mars Volta\, Madeleine Peyroux\, Third Eye Blind\, and the Coup\, and he has appeared on stage with artists such as Deltron 3030\, Josh Groban\, and Garth Brooks. SUMMARY:Corazón Tango: Discovering Contemporary Argentine Tango
DESCRIPTION:Corazón Tango presents popular contemporary Argentine tango pieces arranged by world-renowned maestros from 1980 to the present. Trained in Buenos Aires under the living tango maestros\, the group will perform a variety of trio\, quartet\, and quintet arrangements\, including rare\, original Piazzolla quintet pieces—such as “Kicho\,” “Revirado\,” and “The Four Seasons” series—as well as his early tango work—”Villeguita” and “Melancólico Buenos Aires”—which demonstrates the evolution of his music before he moved onto nuevo tango. The evening will also feature contemporary tango music written by Maestro Horacio Salgán\, Víctor Lavallén\, Leopoldo Federico\, and many more. Guest singer Teresa Tam joins the group to present traditional tango pieces.\n \nFEATURING:\nHanel Yeon – bandoneón\nSumi Lee – piano\nAhram Kim* – violin\nYoonHo Jeong – contrabass\nMaximiliano Larrea* – guitar\nTeresa Tam* – vocals\n(*guest artist)\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nHanel Yeon is a classically trained pianist who obtained a bachelor’s degree in composition from Sookmyung Women’s University in Seoul\, and is a professionally trained tango bandoneonist from La Orquesta Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce. She has studied with top bandoneon maestros such as Rodolfo Daluisio\, Rodolfo Mederos\, Federico Pereiro\, and Dino Salouzi\, as well as piano maestros Nicholas Ledesma\, German Martinez\, and Hernan Posetti. While living in Buenos Aires for 10 years\, Yeon was a widely respected piano teacher and shared the stage with several maestros at prestigious venues. She currently performs with the tango group Scaimmarella as a pianist and bandoneonist. Her previous work includes performing as a pianist at the theater Tango Porteño from 2012-2019\, playing with Siamarella Group in the 2015 Tarbes en Tango Festival in France\, and performing as a bandoneonist in the Buenos Aires Tango Festival and often with the group Romantica Milonguera. \nSumi Lee is a classically trained pianist who obtained a master’s degree in music\, piano performance\, from San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She has also been professionally trained as a tango pianist from La Orquesta Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce\, the most prestigious tango orchestra school in the world sponsored by the city government of Buenos Aires. Lee is a widely respected piano teacher and is on the Board of Directors for the San Francisco branch of Music Teachers’ Association of California. While living in Buenos Aires\, she performed with living maestros and musical directors such as Víctor Lavallén\, Jose Pepe Colangelo\, Osvaldo Piro\, Roberto Alvarez\, Daniel Binelli\, Mauricio Marceli\, Nicolas Ledesma\, and many more. Her latest concert at Teatro General San Martin in Buenos Aires was sold out to a large audience and aired live via national radio 2*4 and TV. Since moving back to the Bay Area in 2018 after receiving her diploma\, she plans to perform authentic Argentine tango music and tour the U.S. and Asia with her own group and produce her own contemporary tango music. \nAhram Kim was born in Gwangju\, South Korea\, and started playing violin at the age of five. She continued her studies in classical music while also having a passion and curiosity for different styles of popular and folk music from all over the world. After graduating from university\, she flew to Buenos Aires in 2009. There\, she received a diploma of orchestral studies of classical music from Instituto Superior del Teatro Colón\, and in 2012 also graduated from Orquesta Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce. Between 2012-2017\, Kim played in the first violin section of Buenos Aires Philharmonic and has been working in operas with Orquesta Estable del Teatro Colon as a guest artist. She has studied tango violin with Miguel Angel Bertero since 2011 and has played and recorded with many tango musicians in Argentina. Kim was the solo violinist in the tango show Cátulo as well as the tango performance Milonga by Sidi Larbi Chercaoui. \nYoonHo Jeong is a classically trained contrabass player who also has been professionally trained as a tango bassist from La Orquesta Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce. He has performed in concerts throughout Argentina and South Korea\, such as international tango festival Mundial 2017 and 2018. While living in Buenos Aires\, Jeong also performed at prestigious concert venues such as Kirchner Cultural Centre\, Teatro General San Martin\, Teatro Coliseo\, Usina del Arte\, Biblioteca Nacional\, and Parque Centenario. After receiving his diploma in 2018\, he moved back to Seoul\, South Korea\, and is planning to perform authentic Argentine tango music and tour many cities in Asia with his own tango group. \nMaximiliano Larrea is an accomplished guitarist\, arranger\, and composer from Rosario\, Argentina\, and is one of the leading interpreters of classical and contemporary guitar of the new tango generation. After completing a degree in classical guitar\, he moved to Buenos Aires where he studied tango and folk music in the prestigious Manuel de Falla Conservatory under legendary guitarist Juan Falú\, as well as tango arranging and composition from renowned masters Diego Schissi\, Nicolas Ledesma\, and Gabriel Senanes. In Argentina\, Larrea worked as a guitarist\, arranger\, and director of multiple acclaimed tango and Argentine folk music groups including Cuartero Revirado\, Quinteto Negro La Boca (Sony Argentina)\, Quinteto Clandestino\, and Aires Trio. Most recently\, he has been working as an arranger for the New Mexico-based quintet Q-Tango\, performing with various tango bands in the Bay Area—such as Mariano Barreiro Quartet and Trio Larrea-ODay-Durso—and preparing the launch of his new musical project\, Maximiliano Larrea Tango Trio. \nTeresa Tam grew up playing violin in orchestras and singing in choirs since her childhood in Taiwan. While attending UC Davis as an undergrad\, she made her solo debut with the prestigious American Bach Soloists in the Bay Area\, performing the “Magnificat\, BWV 243” in D major by Bach. Tam has had the honor of performing as a soloist under the direction of conductors Jeffrey Thomas\, Joshua Rifkin\, and more. After receiving her M.M. in vocal performance from Boston University\, she then began collaborating in various duos with jazz guitarists and performed as a featured soloist with jazz bands around the Bay Area. As an avid Argentine tango dancer\, Tam has formed a new voice and guitar duo with Maxi Larrea. Together\, they blend jazz and tango melodies with the harmonic complexity of these two rich genres to breathe new life into familiar songs. DESCRIPTION:Rumba music originated in the Afro-Cuban neighborhoods of Havana and Matanzas as the soundtrack to community\, partnered dancing and get-togethers as a means of cultural expression. Its global diaspora means rumba rhythms have found their way into other genres of music such as country\, rock\, and blues\, and continue to impact the genres of today.
