Sandy Cressman’s newest project\, Entre Amigos\, includes collaborations with various Brazilian and Brazilophile musicians\, and was recorded in the U.S.\, Brazil\, and Europe. Beautifully conceived\, arranged\, and performed\, Brazilian guitarist/composer Chico Pinheiro describes Entre Amigos as “a delicate and sensitive declaration of love for Brazil\, for [jazz]\, but above all an ode to friendship and to all the bridges that only music can build.”\n \nFEATURING:\nSandy Cressman – vocals\, percussion\nJeff Cressman – trombone\nMurray Low – piano\nDavid Belove – bass\nDillon Vado – drums\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nSandy Cressman is a San Francisco-based jazz vocalist who began her career recording and performing with the vocal jazz group Pastiche before focusing on her passion for Brazilian jazz. This passion led her to form the group Homenagem Brasileira in 1998. She has toured the U.S.\, Europe\, and Brazil\, and has released three critically acclaimed albums including Homenagem Brasileira\, Brasil-Sempre no Coração\, and Entre Amigos. Released in February 2017\, Entre Amigos features all original music that Cressman composed with contemporary Brazilian composers\, such as Santos Neto\, Antonio Adolfo\, Ian Faquini\, and more. Cressman has lent her vocals to recordings by such diverse artists as Ray Obiedo (Windham Hill)\, Pete Escovedo (Concord Crossover)\, and Eddie Money (CBS). On the first Saturday of every even month of the year\, the MAPP transforms ordinary spaces\, such as private garages\, gardens\, living rooms\, studios\, street corners\, and small businesses into pop-up performance and exhibition sites for a day/night of intimate-scale artistic and cultural exchange among a kaleidoscope of individuals and communities. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS\n \nCarlos Cartagena was born in El Salvador. His formative years during his youth were in the 80s when his country was beginning to bleed incurably from the wounds of war. A restless desire to make art was always with him\, and this innate drive—as well as the socio-political condition of his country—induced him\, against all odds\, to abandon an academic career and take up art not only as a profession but also as an alternative form of resistance to the oppressive regime. In November of 1989\, Cartagena came to the U.S. First\, he worked with CODICES\, a group of artists working in support of Salvadoran culture\, and then\, for five years\, with the artists at the KALA Art Institute in Berkeley where he learned techniques of etching and printmaking. Today he is working independently in painting\, printmaking\, installations\, and mixed media. The gentrification of San Francisco knocked on his door in 2016\, and since then has been moving from one place to another.\n \nChile y Limón is a band from San Francisco that plays folk and popular music from Mexico\, Central and South America. For this trio of contagious rhythms\, soaring melodies\, seductive harmonies\, and poetic lyrics\, lead vocalist and flutist Martha Rodriguez-Salazar is joined by accordionist and backup vocalist Jennifer Peringer and bassist Leo Suarez.\n \n \n \nLeticia Hernández-Linares is a poet\, interdisciplinary artist\, and educator. She is the author of Mucha Muchacha (“Too Much Girl”). Widely published\, she has presented her poem-songs throughout the country and in El Salvador. She is a long-time community worker and Mission resident\, and she teaches in the College of Ethnic Studies at SFSU.\n \n \n \nLiliana Herrera is a singer-songwriter\, voiceover artist\, and cultural worker hailing from California’s southern borderlands. Inspired by the indomitable musical spirit of her close-knit family and more than 20 years of artistic collaborations in the Bay Area and beyond—including El Teatro Campesino\, Teatro Sabor\, Golden Gate Opera\, Opera Cultura\, Brava for Women in the Arts\, and La Peña Cultural Center among others—Herrera’s musical roots flourish in the embodiment\, transcendence\, and reflection of the times. Whether it’s velvety torch songs\, scintillating boleros\, sultry blues\, or riveting cumbias\, she sings them with abandon. Her recent recordings include Norte del Rio with Oakland-based cumbia dub band Candelaria and her debut EP\, Late Night Taco Stand Music\, which celebrates the contributions of immigrants and her bicultural spirit inspired by Chicana soul.\n \nFrancisco Herrera is a theologian\, cultural worker\, and singer-songwriter. He has produced seven albums—including two for children’s music in Spanish—and writes scores for film and theater\, working with producers such as Greg Landau\, the late Saul Landau\, and Haskel Wexler. Herrera has shared the stage with Jon Fromer\, Pete Seeger\, Emma’s Revolution at mass actions as School of America’s Watch (up to 22\,000 people)\, and the Battle for Seattle\, with over 250\,000 people shutting down the WTO in 1999. His latest album\, Honor Migrante\, crosses physical and musical borders to expose the grace and beauty of the migrant community with a rocking sound that brings together regional music from Mexico and the U.S.\, as well as a “Chicano soul” style that permeates his eclectic choice of music.\n \nDíaPaSon (“day for son” and Spanish diapasón for “fretboard”) is an ensemble of artists who specialize in Mexican folk music and dance\, particularly the son jarocho. Its artists are active in the rich sonero community of the Bay Area and have collectively and individually studied the son art form with internationally renowned master artists of son jarocho. Under the artistic direction of María de la Rosa\, DíaPaSon promotes and preserves the cultural treasures of Mexico by creating programs and projects that reflect its folkloric traditions. Since 2010\, DíaPaSon—once known as SonRisas—has appeared throughout California\, in Colorado and Mexico\, and has joined the National Performance Network (NPN) touring roster after completion of new works commissioned by the NPN Creation Fund in 2016.\n \nChelis López is an award-winning Mexican journalist who has lived in San Francisco since 1996. For almost ten years she hosted the national radio show Línea Abierta at Radio Bilingüe\, the National Latino Public Radio Network where she interviewed and produced diverse stories including the live broadcast of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, an annual celebration of communities and cultures in the U.S. and around the world presented annually in Washington\, D.C. She is the host and producer of two Spanish-language shows on KPOO 89.5FM in San Francisco—Pájaro Latinoamericano and Andanzas—where she explores and offers news\, comments\, and interviews with newsmakers and artists throughout Latin America. When the ensemble moved to the U.S. in 2010\, they reformed with kamancheh player Niloufar Shiri\, tar player Ebrahim Poustinchi\, pianist Josh Charney\, and bassist Kyle Motl. DESCRIPTION:Guitarist Robert Papacica\, keyboardist Eddie Mendenhall\, and drummer Marcelo Perez join together for an evening of improvisation and original music that draws largely from the jazz tradition and the avant garde.\n \nFEATURING:\nRobert Papacica – guitar\nEddie Mendenhall – organ\nMarcelo Perez – drums\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nNow residing in Miami\, Robert Papacica has appeared as a sideman in clubs in Miami\, San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, Vancouver\, Seattle\, and New York. An alumnus of the Frost School at the University of Miami\, he was a member of the Concert Jazz Band where he played alongside Adam Rogers performing the Concerto for Guitar and Jazz Orchestra\, Dafnis Prieto performing the music of his album Back to the Sunset\, and John Daversa’s Grammy-award winning American Dreamers. Papacica has studied under many notable artists such as John Hart\, Bruce Forman\, Brian Lynch\, Julian Lage\, Pat Kelley\, Gary Meek\, and Adam Rogers. \nEddie Mendenhall began studying piano at the age of four\, and by the time he was eight\, he was good enough to play works from Schumann and Beethoven. He earned a spot in the Monterey Jazz Festival High School All-Star Band in 1989 and 1990 under the direction of Bill Berry\, where he had the opportunity to accompany Dizzy Gillespie at the festival. After high school\, Mendenhall earned scholarships to the Berklee College of Music and went on to graduate with a degree in jazz composition. For the next seven years\, the Tokyo jazz scene kept him busy\, where he rapidly became one of the busiest pianists in the city. His debut album\, Cosine Meets Tangent\, featured his own compositions and remained on the jazz charts for 12 weeks. Mendenhall has performed with the likes of Ray Brown’s Great Big Band\, “Senator” Eugene Wright\, Ray Drummond\, Othello Molineaux\, Pete Christlieb\, the Manhattan Jazz Quintet\, Ali Jackson Jr.\, Tommy Campbell\, Peter Erskine\, Enrique Iglesias\, Akira Tana\, and John Shifflett. He is active in jazz education working with the Monterey Jazz Festival\, the California Jazz Conservatory\, San Jose Jazz Summer Camp\, Living Jazz (Jazz Camp West)\, and the Stanford Jazz Workshop. \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show\nAdmission: $20-25 sliding scale. Their music often mirrors and reflects the Latino experience in a globalized U.S.\, with immigrant roots hailing from Argentina\, Bolivia\, Peru\, and the Bay Area. The music is also greatly influenced by Nueva Trova Latinoamericana in the vein of Silvio Rodriguez\, as well as Santana\, Bunburi\, Calamaro\, Bersuit Vergarabat\, and Manu Chao to name just a few. Los Nadies\, or “The Nobodies\,” take their name from the eponymous poem/essay by Uruguayan historian Eduardo Galeano decrying the invisibility cast upon the millions of dispossessed people around the world. As a band\, Los Nadies are proudly committed to social justice as well as to environmental and political awareness\, yet they embrace a spirit of fun\, joy\, and sheer musicianship in every performance. \nFrontman Juan Cuba\, from Peru\, writes most of the songs and brings an inimitable stage presence to the group. Mateo Nube\, from Bolivia\, is the political soul and in-house activist who plays lead electric and acoustic guitar and shares vocal duties. Bay Area native Marty Jones provides the low-end bass grooves to complement Argentinean José Vergelin’s eclectic drums and percussion. DESCRIPTION:Citizens Jazz pays tribute to legendary American jazz trumpeter\, bandleader\, composer\, and singer John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie. Gillespie was a trumpet virtuoso and improviser\, building on the virtuoso style of Roy Eldridge but adding layers of harmonic and rhythmic complexity previously unheard in jazz. In the 1940s\, Gillespie\, with Charlie Parker\, became a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz. He taught and influenced many other musicians\, including trumpeters Miles Davis\, Jon Faddis\, Fats Navarro\, Clifford Brown\, Arturo Sandoval\, Lee Morgan\, Chuck Mangione\, and balladeer Johnny Hartman.\n \nFEATURING:\nRiley Bandy – alto saxophone\nJames Mahone – tenor saxophone\nGrant Levin – piano\nCaroline Chung – upright bass\nMalachi Whitson – drums\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nCitizens Jazz is a collective of some of the Bay Area’s best up-and-coming and veteran musicians. Each combo brings a different element of magic that happens in the spontaneity of the language of jazz and improvisation. The group is led by bassist Caroline Chung\, who has been gigging professionally for over a decade playing in bands ranging from jazz and funk to Brazilian and Latin. Chung has studied under the late great Herbie Lewis\, performs regularly in the Bay Area\, and has organized several Bay Area Women in Jazz series at Red Poppy Art House.
