DESCRIPTION:From 10:00am to 4:00pm on Saturday\, June 30th and Sunday\, July 1st\, the Red Poppy Art House is seeking volunteers to support a weekend initiative to complete some much-needed refresh projects around the space. If you’ve been wanting to get more involved with the Red Poppy\, or already love the venue and want to help see it shine\, now’s the time to lend a hand! \nProjects include: gardening\, sanding\, sorting items for recycling/donate\, small painting projects like planter boxes and parts of building exterior\, tidying up\, reviewing old computer equipment and backing up files\, and cleaning. If you have a background in carpentry\, painting or IT/tech\, we especially need you! \nNo previous RPAH volunteer work needed. DESCRIPTION:IpeiroKritika performs a mix of traditional Epirot and Cretan tunes and songs\, two styles that are some of the most popular and known to be the most contrasting regional music of Greece.\n \nFEATURING:\nGregory Masaki Jenkins – clarinet\, vocals\nAya Safiya – violin\, vocals\nTano Brock – laouto\, vocals \n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nGregory Masaki Jenkins\, a South Bay native\, has been playing Greek music since 1995 when he first attended Balkan Camp in Mendocino. After five years\, he became an instructor there\, directing Kids Band from 2001-2015 and also teaching at Balkanalia!\, Kolo Festival\, and Zambaleta. His travels to the Balkans have led him to meet and study with some of the world’s greatest Balkan musicians including Nikos Filippidis\, Dzambo Agusev\, and Ferus Mustafov. Jenkins currently directs the Balkan brass band Fanfare Zambaleta\, teaches a weekly rebetika songs class on Tuesdays\, and is on staff at Lark Camp. \nAya Safiya\, a Bay Area-born musician\, has studied Greek music for 20 years. In the past 10 years\, she has made numerous visits to Greece to study with master singers and violinists such as Katerina Papadopoulou\, Nicos Chatzopoulos\, and Nikos Oikonomidhis. Safiya currently performs with Agapi Mou\, Café Aegean\, and Taraf de Locos. \nTano Brock is a Bay Area-born multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, and producer. Some of his primary instruments include percussion\, saxophone\, clarinet\, and guitar. He co-founded Balkan/Latin band Taraf de Locos and has played with Greek quartet Agapi Mou\, as well as Istanbul Connection. The group has toured in New Orleans\, New York City\, and Atlanta\, and has performed at many venues including the High Sierra Music Festival\, Guitarfish\, the Fillmore\, the New Parish\, the Boom Boom Room\, and Ace of Spades. She has been living in the Bay for over two decades and has been performing in musical theater productions and local bands for many years. She has opened for legendary artists such as The English Beat\, Jimmy Cliff\, Fishbone\, Yellowman\, Israel Vibrations\, and Don Carlos. Her most favorite performance was singing the national anthem for the Golden State Warriors in 2010. Guerin has trained with the San Francisco Ballet\, Voice Studio\, SF Acting Academy\, Blue Bear School of Music\, and American Conservatory Theater. DESCRIPTION:Bamdad Ensemble (bâmdâd meaning “dawn”) is orchestrated based on Iranian traditional instruments with an aim to promote and introduce Iranian classical music. Beside this goal\, Bamdad also pays special attention to the diverse folk music of Iran practiced in its vast landscape\, as well as the rich melodies of Khorasan and Kurdistan.\n \nFEATURING:\nFarzin Dehghani – kamanche\nGolnaz Khazei – percussion\nSirvan Manhoobi – oud\, shoorangiz\nAzadeh Farpoor – vocals\nSiavash Rezvan Behbahani – vocals\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nOud player and composer Sirvan Manhoobi started his musical journey at 13 when he started taking taar/setar lessons under the supervision of masters Keivan Saket and Behrooz Hemati. He later became interested in the oud\, attending master Arsalan Kamkar’s classes and eventually choosing the instrument as his primary. Manhoobi was awarded best soloist in three Iranian music festivals and has been featured in several albums. Since forming Bamdad Ensemble\, the group has gone on to perform in many concerts with renowned Iranian singers such as Bijan Kamkar and Aziz Shahrokh. Recorded at ABC Studios in Australia\, Intertwined has been receiving high praise since its release. Frontman of his own trio\, Lumama\, Lu Salcedo captivates audiences with his intricate music. He is a recipient of the Jamey Aebersold Scholarship and a recent graduate of the California Jazz Conservatory. Owen Clapp is a bass player\, composer\, and songwriter. He has worked with Grammy Award-winning jazz musicians Kenny Burrell\, John Clayton\, and Ruslan Sirota.\n \nBrie Capone is a singer-songwriter and performer from Asheville\, NC. With belting female lead vocals and heartfelt\, introspective lyricism with unforgettable melodies\, Capone is a true original. As both a solo acoustic artist and with her band\, she has performed at legendary venues including the Kennedy Center in DC\, the Lincoln Center\, the Asheville Music Hall\, and Grey Eagle with such artists as Kevin Devine and John Kadlecik (Dark Star Orchestra\, Phil Lesh). Capone was the winner of the 2017 New Song Singer-Songwriter Competition. While deeply rooted in the traditions of his native Ireland\, his music constantly looks for connection with other forms—jazz\, blues\, klezmer\, the music cultures of China\, Portugal\, India\, Brazil\, Cuba\, and the Roma diaspora\, to name a few. \nÓ Riain has performed at festivals and venues throughout the world\, from Alaska to Argentina\, Sweden to Vietnam. DESCRIPTION:McBride\, Pera\, and Starkweather delve into the great songs of artists ranging from Joni Mitchell to Bob Dorough to Leon Russell. Vocalist\, keyboardist\, and composer Joyce Todd McBride also brings her original songs into the mix. Together with bassist Stacy Starkweather and drummer Jeff Pera\, the trio draws upon the rich eclecticism of the Bay Area through funk\, jazz\, pop\, and medieval influences.\n \nFEATURING:\nJoyce Todd McBride – vocals\, piano\nStacy Starkweather – vocals\, bass\nJeff Pera – drums\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nMembers Joyce Todd McBride\, Stacy Starkweather\, and Jeff Pera have long been part of the Bay Area music scene before forming a trio in 2016. McBride is the director of Conspiracy of Venus\, a vocal ensemble that performs her arrangements as well as originals. In addition to performing with many local musicians in jazz and classical repertoire\, she is also a voice and piano teacher. \nBassist Stacy Starkweather has played with many groups including the Jazz Mandolin Project\, Hieroglyphics\, Phish\, and is currently playing with the Suspects of Soul and occasionally the Union Hotel’s Jazz Explosion\, Bob Muzzy’s Muzztones\, and DB Walker Band. \nSince benefitting from the programs at the California Jazz Conservatory (CJC) since 2010\, drummer Jeff Pera has played with a variety of people—often with LJT Trio—at the CJC Cafe\, Mr. Tipple’s\, B-Side\, Rose Pistola\, and other Bay Area venues. Having played mostly jazz\, he likes the variety of genres that he is exploring with McBride and Starkweather. DESCRIPTION:Adam Shulman and Patrick Wolff team up to resurrect great original tunes written by some of the masters of ‘50s and ‘60s jazz. In addition to presenting these gems\, the band also features some originals by Shulman.\n \nFEATURING:\nAdam Shulman – piano\nPatrick Wolff – tenor & alto saxophones\nJames Gallagher – drums\nTBD – bass\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nAdam Shulman has been a staple of the San Francisco jazz scene since he moved to the city in 2002. Before the move\, he was a student at UC Santa Cruz where he received a degree in classical performance. While at UCSC he studied jazz piano with Smith Dobson. Shulman can also be seen as a sideman with countless Bay Area musicians and vocalists\, such as Marcus Shelby\, Anton Schwartz\, Andrew Speight\, Erik Jekabson\, Ed Reed\, Mike Olmos\, Gary Brown\, Patrick Wolff\, John Wiitala\, Vince Lateano\, Faye Carol\, Kellye Gray\, Ian Carey\, and Mike Zilber among many others. \nShulman has also played as a sideman with internationally renowned artists Stefon Harris\, Willie Jones III\, Dayna Stephens\, Miguel Zenon\, Mark Murphy\, Alan Harris\, Luciana Souza\, Paula West\, Larry Coryell\, Sean Jones\, Grant Stewart\, John Clayton\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Bria Skonberg\, and with the Glenn Miller Orchestra.
