WaterSaw band members\, Megan Lowe\, Shira Yaziv\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nSamaneh Salehi began her career in Iran after studying graphic design at Tehran Noor Conservatory. Since then\, she chose painting as her favorite form of art to express her artistic vision. Samaneh’s work has been exhibited in Iran\, Dubai\, and Malaysia\, and continues to be exhibited both in the United States and abroad. She is known for her watercolor and acrylic miniature paintings\, inspired by ancient Persian art and combined with contemporary techniques. \nRyan Andersen is a San Francisco-based composer and singer-songwriter creating music that weaves together topics of personal healing\, social justice\, spiritual purpose\, environmental awareness\, and the challenges\, joys\, and responsibilities of being alive at this unique moment in humanity. \nBand Together is the musical arm of the Creative Liberation Network. It is a group of musicians\, artists\, performers\, poets\, dancers\, activists\, and community facilitators who provide educational and performative experiences through collaboration. They are building a seven-album\, 108-song musical catalog as part of a larger book and tarot deck project. The seven albums will be presented as a single catalog\, with each song embodying a different card and each album representing the seven directions\, the four elements\, the Major Arcana\, the 13 Fools\, and the 13 Multiverse in The Fools Tarot. \nWaterSaw is a group of musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area. Their music is composed specifically for modern dance choreography\, film scores\, or in conjunction with another art form. Creating layers of sound through loopers\, their live music varies in range and can be sparse\, rhythmic\, ethereal\, or driving. The collaboration of music and art facilitates the intended artistic expression. WaterSaw uses their instruments in both conventional and experiential forms\, giving way to an array of textures and sounds. \nMegan Lowe is a performance artist\, dancer\, singer\, teacher\, and administrator. She has performed with Flyaway Productions\, Lizz Roman & Dancers\, Scott Wells & Dancers\, Nancy Karp + Dancers\, Epiphany Productions\, Dance Brigade\, and more. Megan continues to create her own dances\, as well as collaborative works with Sonsherée Giles. She teaches for Bandaloop\, Flyaway\, Joe Goode Performance Group\, for contact improvisation gatherings\, and for her alma mater UC Berkeley’s Theater\, Dance & Performance Studies (TDPS). \nShira Yaziv enjoys encouraging people to move in new ways while learning skills and being creative. Her background is in capoeira\, circus arts\, and dance. The ensemble’s diverse roots\, spontaneity\, and musical influences of soul\, modern jazz\, Native American melodies\, and Indian classical traditions help bring together a relevant and powerful statement. This work represents the power of collaboration and mindfulness towards others.\n \nFEATURING:\nSameer Gupta – drumset\, tabla\nJay Gandhi – bansuri flute\nDavid Boyce – saxophone\nRashaan Carter – bass\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nSameer Gupta simultaneously represents the traditions of American jazz on drumset and Indian classical music on tabla. He is also a co-founder and an artistic director of the non-profit collective Brooklyn Raga Massive. Today he lives in Brooklyn\, NYC\, and is actively involved in performing\, curating\, producing\, and teaching through various institutions including Brooklyn Raga Massive\, Carnegie Hall’s Global Encounters\, and Ragas Live Festival. Gupta continues to build his career by combining traditional and modern improvisational styles\, drawing from his dual Indian and American heritage. SUMMARY:Alex Hand Band / Three For Silver: Balkan Folk-Jazz Meets Apocalyptic Folk Noir
DESCRIPTION:A staple in the Bay Area Balkan and gypsy swing scenes in recent years\, Alex Hand’s current project explores the common ground of influence between western art music and jazz with folk music of Eastern Europe. The repertoire features uptempo and high-energy dance tunes from Bulgaria and Romania with a progressive edge. \nSharing the night is post-folk/rock band Three For Silver\, who is currently on tour supporting the newest album\, The Way We Burn\, released September 2017 on Foggy Night Records. The album was recorded outside of traditional studios in an attempt to capture the music out in the wild\, in the nooks and crannies where it’s most likely to breed and grow. Recorded from a dank basement to a cloud-capped stone observatory\, from a silent river home to an empty piano warehouse\, The Way We Burn marks a new generation in album production and a band of people that is more than just one sound or one style.\n \nFEATURING:\nAlex Hand Band\nLewis Patzner – cello\nIsaac Schwartz – drums\nAlex Hand – guitar \nThree For Silver\nLucas Warford – vocals\, resonator bass\, banjo bass\, contrabasin\nWillo Sertain – vocals\, accordion\nGreg Allison – vocals\, violin\, mandolin\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nAlex Hand graduated from the University of Nevada\, Reno in 2011 with a degree in jazz guitar performance. This extraordinary trio of natural-born improvisors will explore the intersections of jazz\, Latin jazz\, flamenco\, and all the spaces in between\, leaving you inspired\, elated\, and transformed.\n \nFEATURING:\nAlex Conde – piano\nJohn Santos – percussion\nJeff Chambers – bass\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nAlex Conde is a vibrant and visionary jazz and flamenco pianist\, composer\, and music educator living in San Francisco. He is a graduate in classical music from the Jose Iturbi Conservatory of Music and in jazz piano from el Liceu de Barcelona. Conde has been in the U.S. for the last ten years and began his tenure here after winning a scholarship to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. While pursuing this degree in jazz performance at Berklee\, he received the Jazz Revelation Award. DESCRIPTION:Co-presented by Diaspora Arts Connection and Red Poppy Art House\, Qais Essar shares new works for the Afghan rabab\, further extending the boundaries of the instrument and presenting it in a new context.\n \nFEATURING:\nQais Essar – rabab\nEric Zang – percussion\, kaval\, electronics\nAntara Bhardwaj – kathak dance\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nQais Essar is a composer\, instrumentalist\, and advocate with the dual mission of keeping Afghan music alive while also pushing it into the future so it does not survive merely as a cultural relic. Qais’ mastery of the Afghan rabab and diverse inspirations are on full display in his recordings\, including two LPs\,—one of which\, The Green Language\, was an Amazon bestseller in India and Pakistan— four EPs\, and one live album. He tours extensively\, having played in eight countries on four continents in the last three years. His original compositions can also be heard in the film The Bread Winner\, produced by Angelina Jolie.
