SUMMARY:Red Poppy Art House Presents: Crossover Collaborative Residencies
DESCRIPTION:Crossover Collaborative Residencies provides a framework to support the exploration of collaborative processes between artists in dance and music disciplines. Pairing six choreographer/dancers and six composer/musicians\, the program follows a four-stage development from preliminary artists gatherings and orientation workshops\, to early-stage “raw” presentations of works-in-progress\, a middle-stage free community-engaged presentation\, and a final performance/presentation. \nWith support from the Kenneth Rainin Foundation and San Francisco Arts Commission \n \n\nAbout the Artists (Cohort 1):\n \nSandra Lawson-Ndu is an Oakland-based musician. As a vocalist and songwriter\, she has contributed to and collaborated on a number of live and recorded projects\, including works with DJ Center (Everything in Time LP) and Nomadic Wax (Diaspora Mix Tape Volume 2). She helped found and organize the Trinity International Hip Hop Festival\, and in the last two years\, she has been invited to participate in both the Zoo Labs Artist Residency and Revolutions Per Minute Artist Lab. Currently\, Sandra is co-leading the band Bells Atlas and working on her solo project. \n  \nLaura Larry Arrington is a dance-artist working in hybrids of idea and practice. Her work in dance (time/space/body/whole) pivots around a desire to orient towards the capacities in us all that can glimpse unseen and unutterable horizons. She is a member of the Montclair Women’s Big Band\, the Mara Performance Collective\, Ends Meat’ Catastrophe Jazz Ensemble\, and the Oba/Bastian duo. She received her BM in Jazz Piano Performance from Oberlin Conservatory and her MA in Music Composition from Mills College. \n \n  \nSAMMAY is a Bay Area-based emerging choreographer/producer and interdisciplinary performing artist of Kapampangan\, Ilokano\, and Bikol descent. Her work has been performed at SOMArts Bay Gallery\, Diego Rivera Art Gallery\, Dance Mission Theater\, and Oracle Arena among others. She is the founder and producer of URBAN x INDIGENOUS\, an inter-generational multi-disciplinary arts festival which celebrates the indigenous spirit in the urban environment of our present day. \n  \nDaniel Riera is a flutist\, EWI player\, bassist\, producer\, composer\, and sound designer from San Francisco. He is active as a stage performer with groups such as Soltron\, Camille Mai\, as well as his own ensemble. His musical training began at the age of ten with Latin-jazz flute virtuoso and composer John Calloway.  Daniel continued his studies at San Francisco’s School of the Arts High and Berklee College of Music\, where he earned his degree in Music Synthesis. Since 2012\, Daniel has been an instructor at Academy of Art University teaching music theory and notation. He is also involved with the group Today’s Future Sound which provides music production education to underserved middle and high school communities in the Bay Area. \n  \nLatanya d. Tigner is a choreographer who has performed professionally with Dimensions Dance Theater since 1986. She has studied and toured nationally and internationally\, performing multidisciplinary works rooted in African diasporic dance forms. Latanya holds a B.A. in Physical Education/Dance\, a Master’s Degree in Arts Administration\, and currently teaches dance at Contra Costa College. Her current research and study of the Second Line parading traditions of New Orleans has enabled her to create one of her most notable pieces\, The Last Dance/St. Anne and N. Rampart. DESCRIPTION:Ya Layl presents “Mostly Middle Eastern\,” a program of Arabic\, Turkish\, Armenian\, and other music performed by Sarah Michael\, Peter Maund\, and Suellen Primost. Special guest Niko Bakulich joins the trio for an eclectic evening of lively dance numbers\, modal improvisations\, American standards\, and medieval pilgrim songs. \nFeaturing:\nSarah Michael – kanun (Arabic zither)\nSuellen Primost – cello\nPeter Maund – percussion\nNiko Bakulich – bass\n \nKanun player Sarah Michael has been studying and performing Middle Eastern music for the past 15 years. Beginning her career as a viola da gamba player\, Sarah has studied with composer and accordion virtuoso Elias Lammam. She has performed with Aswat\, Flowers of the Nile\, the Mevlevi Mutrib\, El Alzifoon\, and her own quartet\, Zamanna. \nPeter Maund studied percussion at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and music\, folklore\, and ethnomusicology at the University of California\, Berkeley. Described by the Glasgow Herald as “the most considerate and imaginative of percussionists\,” he can be heard on over 50 recordings. Maund\, a founding member of Ensemble Alcatraz and Alasdair Fraser’s Skyedance\, has performed with a number of early and contemporary music ensembles. \nSuellen Primost is a conservatory-trained cellist\, composer\, and recording artist. She was principal cellist with the Taos Chamber Orchestra and co-founded Sedona’s first “Jazz on the Rocks” festival before moving to California in 2002. She has served as music director for Artship Ensemble in San Francisco and continues to perform with musicians\, poets\, and artists spanning many different genres. Suellen currently performs with Spiral Dance Chamber Jazz\, the Neshamah Duo\, the Sarah Michael Qanun Ensemble\, and the Espiritu Ensembles.\n \n \n\nAdmission: $15-20. Doors at 7:00pm. DESCRIPTION:Bay Area-based Brazilian guitarist Ricardo Peixoto returns to the Red Poppy alongside Rio de Janeiro-based guitarists Rogério Souza and Edinho Gerber (Duo Violão Brasil). Performing original compositions\, as well as a traditional repertoire from composers like Pixinguinha\, Baden Powell\, and Tom Jobim\, the trio will spend the evening exploring the many styles of 20th-century Brazilian music. \nFeaturing:\nRicardo Peixoto\, Rogerio Souza\, Edinho Gerber – guitar\n \nGuitarist/composer Ricardo Peixoto is among the top representatives of Brazilian guitar in the United States today. Born in Rio de Janeiro\, his fluid melodic style and keen compositional sense explore his country’s rich and diverse traditions\, both in original works and arrangements of Brazilian classics. He has recorded and performed with Claudia Villela\, Flora Purim and Airto\, Bud Shank\, Dom Um Romão\, Sivuca\, Toots Thielemans\, Dori Caymmi\, Guinga\, Claudio Roditi\, and Terra Sul. In addition to his work as a performer and composer\, Ricardo is well respected as a teacher and lecturer on Brazillian music. \nA master of 6- and 7-string guitars\, Rogério Souza is one of the foremost representatives of music from Rio de Janeiro. He has worked as musical director and producer with a multitude of world-class Brazilian musicians\, including Baden Powell\, Paulinho da Viola\, Sivuca\, Ney Matogrosso\, Altamiro Carrilho\, João Bosco\, Paulo Moura\, Ivan Lins\, Guinga\, and Turíbio Santos. Rogério performs regularly throughout Latin America\, the United States\, Europe\, and Asia. \nBeing the son of a Brazilian mother and an American father\, guitarist/composer Edinho Gerber possesses a rich musical vocabulary developed in the two countries. Navigating effortlessly between the genres of choro\, jazz\, samba\, and blues\, he is always in search of the intersection points within his dual cultural identity. Edinho was a staple in the Chicago music scene for many years and has experience playing with a number of Brazilian groups based in the United States. Composer Marcus Shelby and special guests continue these interactive discussions at the Red Poppy Art House on issues about mass incarceration and combating the prison industrial complex. With a focus on dealing with police violence in our communities\, this meeting will feature executive director of AFRO SOLO\, poet\, and activist Thomas Simpson and his presentation\, “Guidelines for Surviving a Police Stop.” The Beyond the Blues discussions are open to anyone interested in reforming our criminal justice system and understanding how the arts can be part of that process. \nSan Francisco-based Marcus Shelby is an accomplished teacher\, composer\, arranger\, and bassist. He was awarded a 2009 Black Metropolis Research Consortium Fellowship in Chicago and received the City Flight Magazine 2005 Award as one of the “Top Ten Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area.” Active in music education\, Marcus currently teaches at The Community Music Center and the Stanford Jazz Workshop. DESCRIPTION:Taking its name from the Southern California foothills\, jazz pianist Richard Sears’ Altadena is a five-part suite that features drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath in a mostly free-form musical context\, blurring the line between soloist and accompanist.  \nFeaturing:\nSteven Lugerner – alto saxophone\, bass clarinet\nPatrick Wolff – tenor saxophone\nRichard Sears – piano\, compositions\nGarret Lang – bass\nTootie Heath – drums \nBrooklyn-based pianist Richard Sears has performed with some of the greatest jazz musicians alive\, including Chick Corea\, Mark Turner\, Joshua Redman\, and Billy Hart. His compositions have been recognized by the Aaron Copland Fund and the Los Angeles Jazz Society. In 2015\, Richard released his latest trio recording\, Skyline\, on Fresh Sound Records. \nGrowing up in Philadelphia\, Tootie Heath came of age playing drums with the likes of Bobby Timmons\, McCoy Tyner\, and Jimmy Garrison. He made his recording debut on John Coltrane’s first album\, Coltrane\, in 1957. Tootie\, who lived in New York and Denmark through the 1960s\, continued to make history working with Thelonious Monk\, Nina Simone\, Wes Montgomery\, and Dexter Gordon\, among others. Pagode\, meaning “party\,” is the small group subgenre of samba that is played in samba schools\, bars\, cafes and backyards of Rio de Janeiro. From cavaquinho and guitar\, to vocals and percussion\, the musical style includes a lively mixture of songs with active audience participation. \n\nAdmission: Free\, donations accepted for musicians ($5-10). SUMMARY:Rob Reich Quintet: New Music for Jazz Accordion
DESCRIPTION:Fresh off the release of his debut album\, Shadowbox\, accordionist\, pianist\, and composer Rob Reich and his quintet return to the Red Poppy. Mixing improvisational romps with refined and melodic ensemble arrangements\, Rob’s idiosyncratic accordion style mixes doses of wry humor and elements of spontaneous revelation that help propel the instrument’s modern renaissance. \nRob Reich (photo by Eddy Joaquim) grew up in Long Island\, New York\, and began studying piano at the age of three. After graduating from Oberlin Conservatory of Music with a degree in music composition\, he moved to the Bay Area where he discovered the accordion. He has since become one of San Francisco’s stalwart underground artists\, well-known for his work with revered chamber music ensemble Tin Hat Trio. In addition to performing live soundtrack to silent films and composing music for contortionists and trapeze artists with Circus Bella\, Rob performs with the acclaimed groups Todd Sickafoose’s Tiny Resistors\, Ben Goldberg School\, Gaucho\, Nice Guy Trio\, and Prez Kids. His debut album of original compositions\, Shadowbox\, combines strong melodic ideas\, rhythmic drive\, and a spirit of irreverence and experimentation.  \n“Rob Reich has carved out a niche as a premier avant-roots voice… like Nino Rota writing for a small jazz group.” — JAZZIZ\n \n \n\nAdmission: $10-20.
