DESCRIPTION:  \nAnnouncing the launch of the Red Poppy Art House’s new monthly film series\, Red Reels! \n  \nRed Reels films will highlight the work of local and emerging filmmakers and expose audiences to diverse global traditions. Screenings will explore a unique interdisciplinary approach by incorporating real-time collaborations with artists from varying mediums like dance\, painting\, and live music. Future events will feature co-presentations with local Bay Area film festivals like the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival\, CounterCorp Festival\, and the San Francisco International Women’s Film Festival. \n  \nRed Reels will kick off Sunday\, February 10th with a screening of Throw Down Your Heart\, directed by Sascha Paladino. The film follows American banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck on his journey to Africa to explore the little known African roots of banjo. It’s a boundary-breaking musical adventure that celebrates the beauty and complexity of Africa – an Africa that is very different from what is often seen in the media today. \n “[Throw Down Your Heart] demonstrates that no other language is needed when two people sit down with their instruments and make them sing.” – San Francisco Chronicle \n  \nFebruary’s screening with feature a solo performance by Scott Mickelson of Fat Opie following the film. \n  \nScott Mickelson is the singer/songwriter for San Francisco band Fat Opie. His narrative style continues to paint both musical and lyrical portraits of contemporary life as an American. The critically acclaimed new release Victoryville (2013) features his unique approach to the banjo in songs like “Crying In Spanish”. He first integrated the banjo on their CD “Hipsters\, Freaks\, Fags & Homeboys” (1995). The song “Bullets In My Briefcase” (1999) also written on the banjo\, won a national band search sponsored by 7UP/(MTV). DESCRIPTION:  \nFrom Puerto Rico: singer-songwriter Fernandito Ferrer \nBorn on july 27th 1978\, Fernando Antonio Ferrer Cruz has been a young pioneer among the new breed of singer-songwriters in Puerto Rico. He first appeared on stage in Lares ’97 and from then on has gotten himself known all around the Island and abroad. Originally from San German\, Ferrer draws from the Nueva Trova giants of the ‘70s but has also developed his own language within his work. His percussive guitar technique and impressive vocal abilities together with the good use of subtle yet powerful melody and poetic imagery puts this small-towner’s music in a much wider context. \n  \nHis style is best compared to the works of Tracy Chapman\, Annie D’Franco\, Antonio Caban Vale\, Silvio Rodriguez and Nick Drake. In January ’02 he published his self-produced dedut album “Después de Tanto Tiempo” recorded in Santo Domingo. In it he merged his prior influences as a drummer\, his love for jazz and his passion for folk music from around the globe. The end result is a soothing sound that although undeniably latin overcomes all territorial boundaries. DESCRIPTION:  \nInnovative\, eclectic string music and improvisations \n  \nMaster koto player\, multi-disciplinary composer\, and virtuosic improviser Miya Masaoka returns to the Bay Area for an intimate concert at the Red Poppy. A pioneer of works for koto and electronics\, Masaoka has created music for So Percussion\, Bang on a Can\, sfSound\, Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet\, and many others. In her pieces she has investigated the sound and movement of insects\, as well as the physiological response of plants\, the human brain and her own body. Within these varied contexts her performance work investigates the interactive\, collaborative aspects of sound\, improvisation\, nature and society. \n  \n  \n  \nBay Area bassist Lisa Mezzacappa‘s new string group is inspired as much by the songs of Bob Wills as the string quartets of Bartok and the free jazz epiphanies of Billy Bang. After so many years of playing with saxophones\, trumpets and drum sets\, Mezzacappa has recently found herself called back to the string family\, where so much acoustic fun can be had with subtle textures\, blending timbres and explosive rhythms.
