This exhibit is a curated selection of bold and dynamic works from BAPC members who employ diverse photographic methods to express both the emotional and the abstract uncanny. \n  \nLike the audible POP! of a balloon expiring\, these works have in common a strong emotional resonance that intends to jolt the viewer to question the artifice of our popular culture. Through bold imagery\, high color and movement\, “POP!” unites these intellectual ideas and further examines the role of artifice as a photographic element by juxtaposing straight photography and constructed images. DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Red Poppy Art House will be hosting an affordable film screening the first Sunday of every month. The first film\, O Friend\, This Waiting! features India’s temple courtesans and most cherished love songs. \n  \nABOUT THE FILM \n  \nCould a song be full of love\, and yet banal and trifling? Such were the padams of Kshetrayya. A wandering poet-musician\, Kshetrayya wrote for devadasis\, the dancing courtesans at the courts of the 17th century Nayaka rulers. His padams became the most cherished of her songs of love. O Friend\, This Waiting! reflects on the entwined fortunes of the padams and the women they were written for\, from the 17th to the 20th century\, while dwelling in the performance spaces of temples and courts of the Nayaka period. \n  \nABOUT THE FILMMAKERS \n  \nSandhya Kumar is an independent filmmaker and editor. She has been making documentaries and experimental shorts since 2007. All her films are rooted in the non-fiction\, and inspired by the desire to make visible the poetry of everyday life. Sandhya holds an MFA in Film from San Francisco Art Institute\, and an MA in Mass Communication from Jamia Millia University\, New Delhi. She lives and works in Bangalore. \n  \nJustin McCarthy is a musician and a dancer. As a musician he plays both the piano and the harpsichord. On the piano\, apart from solo recitals\, he has worked with many vocalists and instrumentalists. On the harpsichord\, he has played solo programs as well as duo recitals with harpsichordist Douglas Amrine. As a dancer he teaches and performs Bharatanatyam\, sometimes as a soloist and sometimes in works he has choreographed for his group of dancers. DESCRIPTION:  \nLaura Inserra is a composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, teacher\, and artistic director. She is a classically trained musician with a strong improvisational background. She plays contemporary and world music in different projects as a percussionist\, multi-instrumentalist and composer. She authors and performs music for theater\, dance performances\, exhibitions as well as soundtracks for movies with internationally acclaimed musicians. \n  \nFor many years she has been involved in the artistic direction of multi-disciplinary performances in Europe and in the US. In 2007 she founded Samavesha\, an international multidisciplinary non profit performing arts organization based out of Berkeley but performing all over the world. \n  \nAmong her productions Art in Nature Festival\, the Cave Concert and Musical Journeys concert series are the most popular. Novilunio is her current world fusion music project. \n  \nAudiences worldwide are not only mesmerized by this woman but also captivated by her virtuosity\, profound musicality and the passion she brings on the stage. \n  \nTaluna \n \nA common thread runs from Dubrovnik to Vukovar\, passing through Belgrade\, touching lightly Tirana and Athens. A thread flowing underwater touching Brindisi and passing through Mediterranean\, skimming the Andalusia coast. A thread moves on guitars and violins chords\, rebounds on leather drums curving on the accordion keys. Knot of these connections\, these are Taluna. Band formed by four musicians with different roots and backgrounds\, moving their first steps in 2008 in Turin (Italy); an immigrant’s city become a meltin’pot of Central Europe and North Africa cultures. Presenting music old and new\, Tango No. 9 embarks on an exciting musical adventure\, borrowing from the rich tango tapestry\, beginning with the tango nuevo of Astor Piazzolla\, turning to the romance and tragedy of classic tango\, adding a touch of Kurt Weill\, a dash of humor and a pinch of West Coast modernism. \n  \nWhat better way to spend the last Saturday before the winter solstice? \n  \nTango No. 9\, born in the Mission District in 1988\, began by exploring where Piazzolla and jazz met. Today\, it has become an all-star Bay Area ensemble\, recognizable by its unique instrumentation of violin\, trombone\, piano\, and voice. DESCRIPTION:  \nSufi\, Folk And Love Songs \n  \nRiffat Sultana channels the musical wisdom of 500 years and eleven generations of master vocalists from India and Pakistan.  She is the daughter of the late Ustad Salamat Ali Khan\, who is universally recognized as the finest Pakistani Classical singer of his time\, and is the first woman from her family’s musical lineage to publicly perform in the West. DESCRIPTION:West Coast CD Release Celebration for CHIVES’ sophomore release\, Dads. \n \n  \nCHIVES represents the collective musical output of bassist Matthew Wohl\, multi-reedist Steven Lugerner and drummer Max Jaffe. Their music is a continuation of the jazz trio continuum – yet CHIVES’ repertoire is heavily influenced by the world of songwriting. Their third recording\, Dads\, was released on Primary Records in August 2012 to critical acclaim. \n  \nCHIVES is not only a platform for fluid improvisation and composition but a story of common experiences\, aesthetic intentions\, and beginnings. Born between 1987 & ’88\, CHIVES each have Jewish roots from their fathers with Australian (Wohl)\, Mexican (Lugerner) & Korean (Jaffe) roots from their mothers. They grew up together in Burlingame\, California surrounded by peers and teachers that nourished their musical sensibilities\, and have collaborated together in various settings since middle school for a total of thirteen years – more than half their lives. After recording their debut self-released album Arnold\, CHIVES collectively relocated to Brooklyn\, NY. During their first two years in New York\, CHIVES produced and released For Brian Wilson\, a dedication to Major League Baseball’s Brian Wilson – closing pitcher for the San Francisco Giants.
