His passion to explore led him to move out of Puerto Rico and travel to different countries allowing him to discover other musical cultures. After years as a sideman\, all of these collaborations helped him find his own voice. Rooted in folk music\, Pedro brings his dynamism and shows the versatility of the instrument in contemporary music. \nBorn in Chiapas\, Mexico\, Miguelito Martinez studied music and transversal flute at the University of Science and Art in Chiapas and La Universidad Veracruzana\, with training in Kodály and Orff. Javi and Ross have been playing gypsy jazz together for over 5 years. Their style is very open and often incorporate latin or flamenco style of influences while always maintaining the jazz concept of the improvisation.\n \nFEATURING:\nJavi Jiménez – guitar\nRoss Howe – guitar\nSascha Jacobsen – upright bass\nEric Rodgers – violin\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nBorn in Madrid Spain\, Javi Jiménez has been playing and studying guitar for over 25 years. In 2007\, after graduating from the Conservatory of Jazz Music in Barcelona\, Spain\, Javi performed all over Europe. During this time\, he discovered the music of Django Reinhardt\, falls in love with it\, and starts studying it. In 2010 Javi arrived in California and has been performing & working as a studio musician and teaching music. He composes\, arranges and performs in his own band Barrio Manouche – A Blend of flamenco\, gypsy jazz and latin rhythms. In his early 20’s he discovered the music of Django Reinhardt and fell in love with it. Ross started playing Piano at the age of 8 and then turned to cello at 11. His style of playing incorporates elements of classical tradition with the vocabulary of contemporary jazz\, and gypsy jazz Manouche music\, while always maintaining respect of the jazz guitar traditions and it’s forefathers\, particularly the immortal Django Reinhardt. When not composing\, playing or teaching guitar\, Ross spends as much time as possible surfing and racing sailboats. After moving to Montreal in 2002\, Sergiu immersed himself into Middle Eastern and North African repertoire. He has performed throughout the U.S.\, Europe\, Canada\, Japan\, and Brazil with artists such as Claudia Villela\, the Berkeley Choro Ensemble\, Flora Purim and Airto\, Paul McCandless\, Bud Shank\, Dom Um Romão\, Sivuca\, Toots Thielemans\, Dori Caymmi\, Guinga\, Arturo Sandoval\, and Terra Sul among others. His 2019 release\, Scary Beautiful\, received a DownBeat Editor’s Pick. \nJulio Lemos is professor of music at the Federal University of Goias\, Brazil\, where he received a master’s degree in guitar. He is now working on his PhD at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and at SF State. Lemos has performed in Brazil and throughout South America\, Europe\, the U.S.\, and China. His group Brasil in Trio released records in 2014 and 2019. The latter\, Brasil in Trio interpreta Jarbas Cavendish\, features Carlos Malta\, Jarbas Cavendish\, and Arismar do Espirito Santo. DESCRIPTION:This collaboration between two world-class musicians from Iran brings their lifetime experience in music and art through their heart and friendship. Pezhham Akhavass and Navid Kandelousi will create moments and flow of traditional\, folk\, and modern Persian music rooted in radif—a collection of Iranian melodies in the modal system—and poetry based on circle rhythmic patterns.\n \nFEATURING:\nPezhham Akhavass – tombak\, daf\nNavid Kandelousi – kamancheh\, violin\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nPezhham Akhavass is a world-class percussionist and modern-day virtuoso of Persian percussive instruments tombak and daf. His studies in youth music theory and tombak began at the age of five\, and with the support of his father\, he studied tombak with Naser Farhang Far and Saeid Roudbary. Akhavass worked professionally in his 20s with the renowned Persian vocalist Shahram Nazeri from 2000-2007. He has since recorded and performed with many master world-class musicians such as Hossein Alizadeh\, Aliakbar Moradi\, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In addition to tombak and daf\, Akhavass is knowledgeable about Persian instruments setar\, tambour\, and oud\, and has studied Indian tabla under the guidance of Ostad Zakir Hussain. Currently residing in San Francisco\, he works on different productions and projects\, teaches private lessons\, and gives lectures and demonstrations in Persian music and performances. \nNavid Kandelousi began studying music on the violin at the age of six. He studied Western classical music in Italy (Verdi Conservatory) and Moscow. Since 1999\, he has performed as a soloist in the Iranian National Orchestra and has been invited as an international violinist in many symphonies around Europe. Kandelousi has played the main violin repertoire of Paganini\, Beethoven\, Sibelius\, Mozart\, and Tchaikovsky. Twenty-five years ago\, Sidibe played a groundbreaking role in the transformation of this region’s music from its origins in hunters’ sacred melodies–played on six-string donso ngoni (hunter’s harps)–to a music of philosophical observations\, politics\, and daily life. Sidibe has won several awards for songwriting including the Billboard World Music Award and the John Lennon Songwriting competition. \nFingerstyle guitarist Walter Strauss’ multi-layered style draws on American roots\, jazz\, classical\, and cultural guitar traditions\, but what makes his playing utterly distinctive is how it is informed by other global stringed instruments. DESCRIPTION:Marta Pereira da Costa is the world’s first and only female professional Portuguese guitarist of fado music\, the soulful sound of Portugal recently acknowledged by UNESCO as part of the World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.\n \nFEATURING:\nTBA\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nMarta Pereira da Costa started playing the piano at the age of four\, and at eight began to study the classical guitar. At 18\, she began to study the Portuguese guitar at the hand of Carlos Gonçalves\, one of the most important “Amália Rodrigues” guitarists. Pereira da Costa had the opportunity to play with names like Mariza\, Camané\, and Carlos do Carmo\, and then became a touring member of Mário Pacheco’s musical group\, where she toured Portugal and abroad. In 2012\, she made the existential decision to abandon her work as a civil engineer in order to pursue her full-time professional career in music\, deciding to focus on her solo career as a Portuguese guitar player. It was also in 2012 when she recorded for Rodrigo Costa’s Fados de Amor\, the first album in the history of fado where the record’s Portuguese guitar portions are solely played by a woman. The album was awarded “Best Fado Album of 2012” by the prestigious Amália Rodrigues Foundation. \nHer career ascended in 2015\, presenting the sold-out concert Fado and the Portuguese Guitar held at the CCB (Belem Cultural Centre of Lisbon). Pereira da Costa went on to play at the Festival Musiques Rares in France and toured all over Portugal\, Italy\, and elsewhere in Europe. On the other side of the Atlantic\, she journeyed on to perform in Brazil\, and then on her first U.S. tour in 2019\, she debuted at SXSW\, the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage\, and Lincoln Center’s Atrium\, touring from New York to California. Trained in Buenos Aires under the living tango maestros\, the group will perform a variety of trio\, quartet\, and quintet arrangements\, including rare\, original Piazzolla quintet pieces—such as “Kicho\,” “Revirado\,” and “The Four Seasons” series—as well as his early tango work—”Villeguita” and “Melancólico Buenos Aires”—which demonstrates the evolution of his music before he moved onto nuevo tango. She has studied with top bandoneon maestros such as Rodolfo Daluisio\, Rodolfo Mederos\, Federico Pereiro\, and Dino Salouzi\, as well as piano maestros Nicholas Ledesma\, German Martinez\, and Hernan Posetti. While living in Buenos Aires for 10 years\, Yeon was a widely respected piano teacher and shared the stage with several maestros at prestigious venues. She currently performs with the tango group Scaimmarella as a pianist and bandoneonist. Her previous work includes performing as a pianist at the theater Tango Porteño from 2012-2019\, playing with Siamarella Group in the 2015 Tarbes en Tango Festival in France\, and performing as a bandoneonist in the Buenos Aires Tango Festival and often with the group Romantica Milonguera. \nSumi Lee is a classically trained pianist who obtained a master’s degree in music\, piano performance\, from San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She has also been professionally trained as a tango pianist from La Orquesta Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce\, the most prestigious tango orchestra school in the world sponsored by the city government of Buenos Aires. Lee is a widely respected piano teacher and is on the Board of Directors for the San Francisco branch of Music Teachers’ Association of California. While living in Buenos Aires\, she performed with living maestros and musical directors such as Víctor Lavallén\, Jose Pepe Colangelo\, Osvaldo Piro\, Roberto Alvarez\, Daniel Binelli\, Mauricio Marceli\, Nicolas Ledesma\, and many more. Her latest concert at Teatro General San Martin in Buenos Aires was sold out to a large audience and aired live via national radio 2*4 and TV. Since moving back to the Bay Area in 2018 after receiving her diploma\, she plans to perform authentic Argentine tango music and tour the U.S. and Asia with her own group and produce her own contemporary tango music. \nAhram Kim was born in Gwangju\, South Korea\, and started playing violin at the age of five. She continued her studies in classical music while also having a passion and curiosity for different styles of popular and folk music from all over the world. After graduating from university\, she flew to Buenos Aires in 2009. There\, she received a diploma of orchestral studies of classical music from Instituto Superior del Teatro Colón\, and in 2012 also graduated from Orquesta Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce. Between 2012-2017\, Kim played in the first violin section of Buenos Aires Philharmonic and has been working in operas with Orquesta Estable del Teatro Colon as a guest artist. She has studied tango violin with Miguel Angel Bertero since 2011 and has played and recorded with many tango musicians in Argentina. Kim was the solo violinist in the tango show Cátulo as well as the tango performance Milonga by Sidi Larbi Chercaoui. \nYoonHo Jeong is a classically trained contrabass player who also has been professionally trained as a tango bassist from La Orquesta Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce. He has performed in concerts throughout Argentina and South Korea\, such as international tango festival Mundial 2017 and 2018. While living in Buenos Aires\, Jeong also performed at prestigious concert venues such as Kirchner Cultural Centre\, Teatro General San Martin\, Teatro Coliseo\, Usina del Arte\, Biblioteca Nacional\, and Parque Centenario. After receiving his diploma in 2018\, he moved back to Seoul\, South Korea\, and is planning to perform authentic Argentine tango music and tour many cities in Asia with his own tango group. \nMaximiliano Larrea is an accomplished guitarist\, arranger\, and composer from Rosario\, Argentina\, and is one of the leading interpreters of classical and contemporary guitar of the new tango generation. After completing a degree in classical guitar\, he moved to Buenos Aires where he studied tango and folk music in the prestigious Manuel de Falla Conservatory under legendary guitarist Juan Falú\, as well as tango arranging and composition from renowned masters Diego Schissi\, Nicolas Ledesma\, and Gabriel Senanes. In Argentina\, Larrea worked as a guitarist\, arranger\, and director of multiple acclaimed tango and Argentine folk music groups including Cuartero Revirado\, Quinteto Negro La Boca (Sony Argentina)\, Quinteto Clandestino\, and Aires Trio. Most recently\, he has been working as an arranger for the New Mexico-based quintet Q-Tango\, performing with various tango bands in the Bay Area—such as Mariano Barreiro Quartet and Trio Larrea-ODay-Durso—and preparing the launch of his new musical project\, Maximiliano Larrea Tango Trio. \nTeresa Tam grew up playing violin in orchestras and singing in choirs since her childhood in Taiwan. While attending UC Davis as an undergrad\, she made her solo debut with the prestigious American Bach Soloists in the Bay Area\, performing the “Magnificat\, BWV 243” in D major by Bach. Tam has had the honor of performing as a soloist under the direction of conductors Jeffrey Thomas\, Joshua Rifkin\, and more. After receiving her M.M. in vocal performance from Boston University\, she then began collaborating in various duos with jazz guitarists and performed as a featured soloist with jazz bands around the Bay Area. As an avid Argentine tango dancer\, Tam has formed a new voice and guitar duo with Maxi Larrea. Together\, they blend jazz and tango melodies with the harmonic complexity of these two rich genres to breathe new life into familiar songs.
