An alumnus of the Frost School at the University of Miami\, he was a member of the Concert Jazz Band where he played alongside Adam Rogers performing the Concerto for Guitar and Jazz Orchestra\, Dafnis Prieto performing the music of his album Back to the Sunset\, and John Daversa’s Grammy-award winning American Dreamers. Papacica has studied under many notable artists such as John Hart\, Bruce Forman\, Brian Lynch\, Julian Lage\, Pat Kelley\, Gary Meek\, and Adam Rogers. \nEddie Mendenhall began studying piano at the age of four\, and by the time he was eight\, he was good enough to play works from Schumann and Beethoven. He earned a spot in the Monterey Jazz Festival High School All-Star Band in 1989 and 1990 under the direction of Bill Berry\, where he had the opportunity to accompany Dizzy Gillespie at the festival. After high school\, Mendenhall earned scholarships to the Berklee College of Music and went on to graduate with a degree in jazz composition. For the next seven years\, the Tokyo jazz scene kept him busy\, where he rapidly became one of the busiest pianists in the city. His debut album\, Cosine Meets Tangent\, featured his own compositions and remained on the jazz charts for 12 weeks. Mendenhall has performed with the likes of Ray Brown’s Great Big Band\, “Senator” Eugene Wright\, Ray Drummond\, Othello Molineaux\, Pete Christlieb\, the Manhattan Jazz Quintet\, Ali Jackson Jr.\, Tommy Campbell\, Peter Erskine\, Enrique Iglesias\, Akira Tana\, and John Shifflett. On the first Saturday of every even month of the year\, the MAPP transforms ordinary spaces\, such as private garages\, gardens\, living rooms\, studios\, street corners\, and small businesses into pop-up performance and exhibition sites for a day/night of intimate-scale artistic and cultural exchange among a kaleidoscope of individuals and communities. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS\n \nCarlos Cartagena was born in El Salvador. His formative years during his youth were in the 80s when his country was beginning to bleed incurably from the wounds of war. A restless desire to make art was always with him\, and this innate drive—as well as the socio-political condition of his country—induced him\, against all odds\, to abandon an academic career and take up art not only as a profession but also as an alternative form of resistance to the oppressive regime. In November of 1989\, Cartagena came to the U.S. First\, he worked with CODICES\, a group of artists working in support of Salvadoran culture\, and then\, for five years\, with the artists at the KALA Art Institute in Berkeley where he learned techniques of etching and printmaking. Today he is working independently in painting\, printmaking\, installations\, and mixed media. The gentrification of San Francisco knocked on his door in 2016\, and since then has been moving from one place to another.\n \nChile y Limón is a band from San Francisco that plays folk and popular music from Mexico\, Central and South America. For this trio of contagious rhythms\, soaring melodies\, seductive harmonies\, and poetic lyrics\, lead vocalist and flutist Martha Rodriguez-Salazar is joined by accordionist and backup vocalist Jennifer Peringer and bassist Leo Suarez.\n \n \n \nLeticia Hernández-Linares is a poet\, interdisciplinary artist\, and educator. She is the author of Mucha Muchacha (“Too Much Girl”). Widely published\, she has presented her poem-songs throughout the country and in El Salvador. She is a long-time community worker and Mission resident\, and she teaches in the College of Ethnic Studies at SFSU.\n \n \n \nLiliana Herrera is a singer-songwriter\, voiceover artist\, and cultural worker hailing from California’s southern borderlands. Inspired by the indomitable musical spirit of her close-knit family and more than 20 years of artistic collaborations in the Bay Area and beyond—including El Teatro Campesino\, Teatro Sabor\, Golden Gate Opera\, Opera Cultura\, Brava for Women in the Arts\, and La Peña Cultural Center among others—Herrera’s musical roots flourish in the embodiment\, transcendence\, and reflection of the times. Whether it’s velvety torch songs\, scintillating boleros\, sultry blues\, or riveting cumbias\, she sings them with abandon. Her recent recordings include Norte del Rio with Oakland-based cumbia dub band Candelaria and her debut EP\, Late Night Taco Stand Music\, which celebrates the contributions of immigrants and her bicultural spirit inspired by Chicana soul.\n \nFrancisco Herrera is a theologian\, cultural worker\, and singer-songwriter. He has produced seven albums—including two for children’s music in Spanish—and writes scores for film and theater\, working with producers such as Greg Landau\, the late Saul Landau\, and Haskel Wexler. Herrera has shared the stage with Jon Fromer\, Pete Seeger\, Emma’s Revolution at mass actions as School of America’s Watch (up to 22\,000 people)\, and the Battle for Seattle\, with over 250\,000 people shutting down the WTO in 1999. His latest album\, Honor Migrante\, crosses physical and musical borders to expose the grace and beauty of the migrant community with a rocking sound that brings together regional music from Mexico and the U.S.\, as well as a “Chicano soul” style that permeates his eclectic choice of music.\n \nDíaPaSon (“day for son” and Spanish diapasón for “fretboard”) is an ensemble of artists who specialize in Mexican folk music and dance\, particularly the son jarocho. Its artists are active in the rich sonero community of the Bay Area and have collectively and individually studied the son art form with internationally renowned master artists of son jarocho. Under the artistic direction of María de la Rosa\, DíaPaSon promotes and preserves the cultural treasures of Mexico by creating programs and projects that reflect its folkloric traditions. Since 2010\, DíaPaSon—once known as SonRisas—has appeared throughout California\, in Colorado and Mexico\, and has joined the National Performance Network (NPN) touring roster after completion of new works commissioned by the NPN Creation Fund in 2016.\n \nChelis López is an award-winning Mexican journalist who has lived in San Francisco since 1996. For almost ten years she hosted the national radio show Línea Abierta at Radio Bilingüe\, the National Latino Public Radio Network where she interviewed and produced diverse stories including the live broadcast of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, an annual celebration of communities and cultures in the U.S. and around the world presented annually in Washington\, D.C. She is the host and producer of two Spanish-language shows on KPOO 89.5FM in San Francisco—Pájaro Latinoamericano and Andanzas—where she explores and offers news\, comments\, and interviews with newsmakers and artists throughout Latin America. Sandy Cressman’s newest project\, Entre Amigos\, includes collaborations with various Brazilian and Brazilophile musicians\, and was recorded in the U.S.\, Brazil\, and Europe. Beautifully conceived\, arranged\, and performed\, Brazilian guitarist/composer Chico Pinheiro describes Entre Amigos as “a delicate and sensitive declaration of love for Brazil\, for [jazz]\, but above all an ode to friendship and to all the bridges that only music can build.”\n \nFEATURING:\nSandy Cressman – vocals\, percussion\nJeff Cressman – trombone\nMurray Low – piano\nDavid Belove – bass\nDillon Vado – drums\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nSandy Cressman is a San Francisco-based jazz vocalist who began her career recording and performing with the vocal jazz group Pastiche before focusing on her passion for Brazilian jazz. By the age of 17\, she was performing professionally in Mallorca and later made Madrid her base where she performed for years as a featured dancer in tablaos such as Corral de la Morería\, Canasteros\, Zambra\, and Casa Patas. She toured internationally with many companies including Mario Maya Company\, Compañia Raul\, and Paco Peńa. \nIn 1994\, La Tania moved to the U.S. and since then toured with her company internationally\, earning rave reviews from the Tokyo Times\, Los Angeles Times\, New York Times\, San Francisco Chronicle\, as well as awards such as the Guggenheim Fellowship\, the California Arts Council Fellowship\, the National Endowments for the Arts Fellowship\, the James Irvine Fellowship in Dance\, and the Isadora Duncan Dance Award twice for Artistic Excellence in the category of Individual Performance. In 2018\, she was awarded with a sustained achievement award from the Isadora Duncan Awards. La Tania has collaborated with Alonzo King Lines Ballet\, Theatre of Yugen\, Opera Parallel\, Rupa & The April Fishes\, and Adrian Arias to name a few. Currently residing in Oakland\, she teaches in San Francisco and Oakland all year round and has been a driving force in the Bay Area flamenco community since 1994. They combined these styles and infused improvisation\, culminating in an adventurous power trio. Currently finishing up his undergraduate education at NYU\, Howell has increasingly immersed himself in the NYC jazz scene\, performing at notable venues including the Blue Note\, the Cutting Room\, and Rockwood Music Hall. Throughout his career\, he has performed in numerous venues including Yoshi’s Oakland\, SFJazz Center\, San Francisco Jazz Festival\, as well as the XJAZZ Festival and famed jazz club the Badenscher Hof in Berlin. In the last few years\, Howell has performed with renowned artists such as Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah\, John Scofield\, and Alex Sipiagin. He is currently recording several albums including an EP with Daptain Hook. \nGrowing up in a home of R&B\, funk\, and soul lovers\, music has always been at the heart of life for guitarist\, composer\, and educator Franklin Rankin. He is a graduate of Berklee College of Music with a degree in jazz composition\, and he received his master’s in jazz studies from NYU. Based in New York\, Rankin is a freelance musician and an adjunct instructor of guitar at NYU. He has performed with a wide range of artists\, some of which include Azealia Banks\, Chris Potter\, and Micah Stampley. \nBassist Nick Panoutsos has become an increasingly prominent voice on the New York City jazz scene with roots in the San Francisco Bay Area. Over the last three years\, he has performed in the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest in addition to several local venues on both coasts\, such as Greenwich Village’s Bar Next Door and San Francisco’s Club Deluxe. In a time when there is so much negative perception about the Middle East\, the ensemble believes that the aesthetics and variety of these cultures would be of interest to American audiences. There is much beautiful music to be heard from these countries that have been developing and evolving their culture for a few thousand years. The Mid-East Tapestry Ensemble is a 501c3 California non-profit organization.\n \nFEATURING:\nVince Delgado – kanun\, percussion\nCoralie Russo – oud\nRami Ziadeh – riqq\, percussion\nTom Shader – acoustic bass\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nVince Delgado has been playing jazz for 75 years and Middle Eastern music for 59 years. In 1951\, he studied Japanese classical music\, and in 1965\, he began studying North Indian classical music on the tabla. He became the first director of the Ali Akbar College of Music in 1968 and has been featured on numerous recordings as a percussionist. He has performed in Istanbul\, Paris\, London\, Mumbai\, Bogota\, Mexico City\, and other cities around the world with many luminaries including Zakir Hussain\, Ali Akbar Khan\, Necati Çelik\, Halil Karaduman\, John McLaughlin\, Paul Winter Consort\, Mickey Hart\, Harry Partch\, Simon Shaheen\, and Larry Vuckovich. \nCoralie Russo has been playing and performing Egyptian\, Turkish\, Greek\, Lebanese\, Armenian\, Syrian\, and Persian music on the oud\, an 11-stringed lute\, for 40 years. She has studied with master musicians John Belizekjian\, Necati Çelik\, Georges Lammam\, and Haig Manookian. Russo has also performed with Jazayer\, Coral Rose\, Aywah Dance Company and the Gypsy Caravan\, and currently plays with Mid-East Tapestry Ensemble\, the Aswat Women’s Ensemble\, as well as Larry Vuckovich’s Blue Balkan and Crosswinds Jazz ensembles. \nRami Ziadeh was born in Kuwait. He began playing Arabic tabla at the age of four and was playing professionally by age nine. At 15\, he moved to the U.S. and began studying drums with Roy Burns and Tony Williams\, as well as tabla with Swapan Chauduri at the CIA. Ziadeh combines Middle Eastern techniques with jazz and flamenco rhythms. He has performed with Shabaz/Ali Khan\, guitarists Mark Taylor and David Correa\, Desert Wind\, flamenco-jazz pianist Alex Conde\, jazz bassist Jeff Denson\, Pharoah Sanders\, and Alonzo King Ballet. Ziadeh has also accompanied flamenco artists La Tania\, La Fibi\, and other flamenco and Middle Eastern artists. \nTom Shader is an acoustic bass player raised in the Detroit area\, where he studied violin\, viola\, cello\, string bass\, and voice. He has had the privilege of performing with many fine musicians including Steve Allen\, Henry Mancini\, and Tommy Newsome. In addition to being a mainstay at many North Bay and San Francisco jazz clubs\, Shader has appeared at some of the area’s popular jazz festivals such as Russian River\, Cotati\, Benicia\, Monterey\, Mammoth Lakes\, Morro Bay\, and the Sacramento Jubilee. His Middle Eastern bass work can be heard on numerous CD recordings. Plots for Wayang Bali are drawn from the Mahabharata myth cycle\, in which five brothers are pitted against one hundred jealous cousins in a struggle for power involving gods\, demons\, magical weapons\, and the inevitable beautiful princess. In 1972\, he founded ShadowLight Productions to nurture indigenous shadow theatre traditions\, as well as to explore and expand the possibilities of the shadow theatre medium. Described as “a nimble collection of atmospheric\, jazz-soaked musings that recalls Norah Jones’ sophisticated debut\,” Paint the Sky was released on all streaming platforms in March 2019. With training in jazz piano/composition with producer and multi-instrumentalist Arthur Khu\, and experience singing jazz professionally in San Francisco\, Wilson is equally at home on stage performing as she is writing at her piano and in coffee shops around San Francisco. \nNoa Levy is a jazz-rock vocalist originally from Israel\, currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area. With the emotional directness of Carmen McCrae—a powerful voice reminiscent of Eva Cassidy—and the playful energy of Anita O’Day\, Levy sings with emotional lyricism and magnetic stage presence. She has performed with top-level artists in Israel\, including Yoni Rector\, as well as recently at SF JAZZ in San Francisco. Their debut album\, Woven Landscapes (2015)\, reached number six on the World Music Charts\, while their follow-up\, Painted Sands (2018)\, peaked at number four with over 10 weeks on the charts. The group’s festival highlights range from Symbiosis and Lighting in a Bottle to performing at art centers in San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, and Egypt. \nComposer\, vocalist\, and multi-instrumentalist Narayan Sijan lived on the Silk Road from 1994-2006\, learning music from mystics\, masters\, and locals on a shoestring budget.
