With the notion that art is present in all occasions of social change\, she believes art liberates people to express their emotions and ideas in any possible way that is imagined. Through this powerful creative tool\, she looks to inspire children to create and become creators of their own realities. Evin specialized in Kurdish traditional and Dengbêjî music\, while Oktay developed his skills in composing and directing.\nTheir passion for music led them to explore various avenues\, including acting and dubbing for films\, documentaries\, and short films. As accomplished musicians\, Evin and Oktay have created original music and contributed to numerous projects across different media. \nIn 2007\, Evin and Oktay founded Ariya Rengin\, a music group where they showcase their exceptional talents. They sing traditional Kurdish music as well as Armenian and Turkish songs\, earning them a reputation for versatility and artistic excellence. \nIn their pursuit of musical excellence\, Evin and Oktay continue to refine their craft and expand their knowledge by collaborating with renowned artists in the Bay Area. With their unwavering dedication to music\, Evin and Oktay have established themselves as significant contributors to the Kurdish music scene and beyond. \nSirvan Manhoobi is an Iranian oud player. Sirvan started his musical journey at age 13 studying tar/sehtar with Keivan Saket and Behrooz Hemati. He chose oud as his primary instrument and attended classes with Arsalan Kamkar. He studied with Mohammad Reza Lotfi (Radif Navazi-Iranian classical music repertoire)\, Mehran Rohani (principles and history of music)\, Siamak Jahangiri (improvisation and analysis of Radif Navazi). He received Best Soloist awards at Iranian music festivals and formed the Bamdad Music Ensemble\, focusing on Kurdish and Iranian classical music. He has a master’s of archaeology from Tehran University and currently lives in Oakland\, performing\, composing\, and teaching Iranian and Kurdish music. \nSusanna Goldenstein has been performing world percussion in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 25 years\, with a focus on Middle Eastern genres. She has studied with Susu Pampanin\, Faisal Zedan\, and Mary Ellen Donald. \nNariman Assadi is an Iranian percussionist. Raised in Tehran\, he always felt drawn to percussion instruments. At the age of thirteen\, he began studying Tombak under Master Amir Mogharab Samadi. From 2008 to 2013\, Nariman performed at Vahdat Hall as a soloist and with the Persian Percussion Ensemble at Pars Academy\, the premier music academy for children. After mastering Tombak\, he then began learning Daf under the great Master Bijan Kamkar. With a strong understanding of the Daf and Tombak\, Nariman started learning Barbat (Oud) under Master Mohammad Firouzi. \nIn 2015\, Nariman immigrated to the United States. He immediately began his professional music career by performing and attending festivals. Along with being a member of various ensembles\, Nariman teaches Daf\, Tombak\, and Music for children and is working towards his Orff Certification. \nNiloufar Shiri is a kamāncheh player\, composer\, and improviser from Tehran\, Iran. Her music weaves Iranian musical structure from the Radif with timbers\, textures\, and noise to the techniques perspectives of contemporary music. She focuses particularly on the investigation of timbral and textural components\, as well as the sonic capabilities of the kamancheh. Her distinctive language and approach to Kamancheh and music creation explores the radical self transformation that comes with displacement and the strive to reconnect to her sense of self as a woman. She is a graduate of Tehran Music Conservatory\, University of California\, San Diego\, and University of California\, Irvine. She is currently the artist in residence at the Pomona College at Claremont. \nUmit Yilmaz was born in Istanbul\, Turkiye in 1989. He showed great interest towards music in early ages. He started taking music lessons at the age of 12 with his father’s encouragement and played saz in Turkish folk music choirs. He started his professional music career in a band he formed with a group of friends in university. Since then he has performed with various musicians in live concerts and album recordings and given saz lessons. Currently he lives in San Francisco and continues his passion to introduce this instrument to the world\, combining its traditional sound with a modern touch. \nBrian Hennessey: A Bay area Transplant from Providence\, Rhode Island. He’s been playing bass for almost 25 Years With experience and education in Classical and jazz. With 10+ Years of touring experience\, his creativity has flowed across many music styles. With this fluid use of creative spirit\, he’s made recordings for labels like ascetic house\, ashtray monument\, wharf cat\, iron lung and others. His studies in music composition at SFSU have guided his inspiration towards tonality outside of what he grew up with. Upon completion Of his degree \, he hopes to use his accrued experience to compose for video games and film.Alex Conde is a foremost exponent of piano flamenco and jazz fusion. Born in Spain\, he graduated from the Jose Iturbi Conservatory\, then at Berklee and in 2016 received his masters in jazz at CUNY\, in New York. After spending 15 years in the USA\, he has performed in venues such as Blue Note NY\, Kimmel Center Philadelphia\, San Jose Jazz Festival or Beantown Jazz Festival among many others. Mr Conde has written music for the Oakland Youth Orchestra and Miami Chamber Orchestra among others. As well\, his work with improvisation attempts to embody the phenomenon of wordless prayer. \nFeaturing Artists:\nOkorie Johnson – cello \nSaturday\, May 20th\, 2023\nTime: 6:30 pm doors\, 7:00 pm show\nAdmission: (Online) $20-30 / (Door) $35 general \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE ARTIST:  \n\n\nOkorie “OkCello” Johnson is an American cellist-songwriter whose artistry integrates cello performance\, live-sound-looping\, improvisation\, and storytelling – all culminating in original compositions that collide classical with jazz\, EDM\, reggae\, and funk. \nIn 2021\, Okorie OkCello Johnson was selected to be one of the presenters at the Democratic Republic of the Congo Biennale (Scheduled for September 2022) for his proposal of a sound installation project entitled “Vessel of Breath\,” a meditative cello composition comprised of harvested sound\, collaborative compositions\, and community interviews. In addition\, he was selected to participate in the Kennedy Center’s artist residence program entitled Office Hours (scheduled for March 2022)\, in which he will begin workshopping the process for the sound installation project above. 2021 also saw his inclusion in the InStyle February issue\, which identified him as a member of the “Creative Class Making Atlanta the New Epicenter of American Arts.” He was also identified in Atlanta Magazine’s “Atlanta Rising Creative Class [that] Is Gaining New Recognition on the National Scene.” Finally\, a documentary he scored for the Atlanta Journal Constitution\, “Imperfect Alibi” won a regional Emmy\, he released his third studio project Beacon in September of 2021\, and in December\, he released a holiday album entitled\, An OkChristmas. \nIn 2020 Okorie was commissioned by Flux Projects to create improvisational work entitled “Stir Crazy” directly responding to the isolation that stemmed from the COVID19 quarantines. He then collaborated with visual artist Fahamu Pecou and poet Jon Goode to create a performance art piece entitled HUE+MEN that\, in response to the murders of George Floyd\, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor\, asserted through sound\, imagery\, and poetry the sanctity and power of Black humanity. He also went on to be selected by Emory University to participate in its inaugural Arts and Social Justice Fellowship program\, created by the Emory Center for Ethics. In that program\, he and 5 other Atlanta artists were commissioned to create in collaboration with Emory professors and their classes pieces of art that spoke to the racial reckoning that the US experienced that summer. \nIn 2019\, he had the honor of performing at SXSW for Choose ATL and the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau\, performing at the Oak Hill Stage of the Atlanta Jazz Festival\, opening for Grammy award winning artist Van Hunt\, being a featured artist on the Story2019 festival at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville\, opening for Grammy award winning recording artist Maxwell at the Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park\, and being invited to perform in Havana\, Cuba at the classical music festival Habana Classica\, which coincided with the 500th birthday of that capital city. \nHe is a recipient of the Alliance Theatre’s 2018 Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab grant\, and a 2018 Creative Loafing Readers’ Choice winner for Best Local Jazz Act. Proof of vaccination is required.  \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE ARTIST:  \n\n\nMelinda Martinez Becker’s New Mexican and Jewish heritage has shaped her career as a performer of art song in Spanish\, Ladino\, Yiddish and a variety of other languages. As a soloist and chamber musician\, she is recognized for her expressive interpretations of diverse repertoire\, such as baroque\, new\, and experimental music. \nMelinda’s collaborations with emerging new music composers and ensembles include projects with Nicolas Lell Benavides\, Emily Koh\, Friction Quartet\, Brian Baumbusch\, the Musical Art Quintet\, and as a soloist with the Ukiah Symphony Orchestra.\nShe is dedicated to performing\, championing\, and the education of music by underrepresented groups\, including BIPOC and female composers. In 2023 she will join forces with Friction Quartet to record Canto Caló\, an album of music by Nicolas Lell Benavides\, on Innova Recordings. \nFriction Quartet exists to modernize the chamber music experience and expand the string quartet repertoire. Friction achieves this mission by commissioning new works\, curating imaginative programs\, collaborating with artists\, and presenting interactive educational outreach. Joshua Kosman (San Francisco Chronicle) has declared them\, “The Bay Area’s redoubtable new-music ensemble.”\nSince forming in 2011\, Friction has commissioned fifty works for string quartet and given world premiere performances of more than eighty works. They won Second Prize in the 2016 Schoenfeld Competition\, were quarter-finalists in the 2015 Fischoff Competition\, and placed second at the 2015 Frances Walton Competition. \nFriction appears on recordings with National Sawdust Tracks\, Innova Records\, Albany Records\, and Pinna Records. Passionate about introducing the world to the rich music of her upbringing\, Edrees has given Arabic music workshops at UC Berkeley\, Stanford and Labyrinth Online. She has taught Arabic music and European counterpoint at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and is currently on the violin faculty of Santa Clara University. Basma Edrees earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in violin performance from Mannes School of Music and The Juilliard Schools in New York. She enjoys a rich career as a western classical violinist\, Argentine Tango violinist and Arabic violin player. \nSirvan Manhoobi started his musical journey at age 13 studying tar/sehtar with Keivan Saket and Behrooz Hemati. He chose oud as his primary instrument and attended classes with Arsalan Kamkar. He studied with Mohammad Reza Lotfi (Radif Navazi-Iranian classical music repertoire)\, Mehran Rohani (principles and history of music)\, Siamak Jahangiri (improvisation and analysis of Radif Navazi). He received Best Soloist awards at Iranian music festivals and formed the Bamdad Music Ensemble\, focusing on Kurdish and Iranian classical music. He has a master’s of archaeology from Tehran University and currently lives in Oakland\, performing\, composing\, and teaching Iranian and Kurdish music. \nReda Darwish\, a native of Cairo\, has been playing various percussion instruments since childhood. At eight years old\, he was featured weekly on Egyptian television. Soon after he was playing for Egypt’s most famous dancers and singers including Fayza Ahmed\, Nagat Al Saghira\, and Samira Said. He later toured with Hani Mahanna’s orchestra\, including to the United States where Darwish has now made his new home. In 2007 he graduated from the Conservatory of Jazz Music in Barcelona Spain. During this time\, he discovered the music of Django Reinhardt\, falls in love with it and starts studying it. In 2010 Javi moved to California\, since then he has been performing & working as a studio musician. \nHe composes\, arranges and performs in his own band Barrio Manouche\, a Blend of flamenco\, gypsy jazz and Latin rhythms. The band had played at the Monterey Jazz Festival\, Outside Lands\, Django Festival and Stern Grove Festival and he had open for national and International acts such as Devotchka(Little Miss Sunshine)\, Pink Martini\, Boulou & Elios Ferré\, Gaby Moreno\, La Santa Cecilia. \nIván Rondón (from Barrio Manouche) is a singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist born and raised in Colombia who became a San Francisco Bay Area resident around 2013. Singing mostly in Spanish\, she creates authentic\, inspiring music at the borderlands between cultures\, languages\, and genres.  \nDiana has caught the attention of national media as well as acclaimed musicians who’ve been drawn to her singular music and intrigued by her life story. From the age of 13\, Gameros has resided in the United States\, and for much of that time\, she was an undocumented immigrant. \nDiana is a singer\, guitarist\, pianist\, composer\, songwriter\, music instructor and social justice activist\, based in San Francisco\, California. She was born and raised in Ciudad Juárez\, México and immigrated to the United States as a teenager to study music in Michigan. Over the last decade in the Bay Area she has released two albums of original songs written in Spanish and English\, and Mexican classic songs. In 2014 Diana received the Emerging Leader Award by the Chicana/Latina Foundation. In 2015 she was named one of YBCA’s 100: creative minds\, makers\, and pioneers that are asking the questions; and making the provocations that will shape the future of American culture. NPR Music gave Diana an honorable mention to Arrullo in best Latin albums of the year in 2017. Diana was named one of SF Magazine’s 100 Artists: Artists Putting The East Bay On The Map\, in 2018.  \nDiana has been highlighted often by NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert contest; series\, and a documentary film about her was released by KQED in 2020. Other masters he has studied under include Mohamadreza Lotfi (Radif Navazi-Iranian classical music repertoire)\, Mehran Rohani (principles and history of music)\, Siamak Jahangiri (improvisation and analysis of Radif). Upon taking workshops in improvisation with Hossein Alizadeh\, Manhoobi was also introduced to the shoorangiz instrument. He was awarded Best Soloist in Iranian music festivals and collaborated with Ardeshir Kamkar. Manhoobi formed the Bamdad Music Ensemble\, focusing on Kurdish and Iranian classical music. He is a MA graduate of archaeology from Tehran University and has worked with Bahram Bezaei as a composer and tar player for his most recent play\, Tarabnameh\, at Stanford. His love of traditional Persian music\, coupled with expressive and soulful Flamenco music\, created a style that is uniquely his. His first concert in fusion music was in Tehran in 1991 and his first album\, ARG influenced and inspired by the immense culture of the ancient Persian Empire and Magham melody was produced in 1999. He composed several music for TV serials and Short tizer advertisements. \nEmad has also collaborated with the movie industry and has composed the music score for the movie Mum’s Guest directed by Daryoush Mehrjooee & Ebrahim Hatamikia\, Ramin Mohseni\, Sepideh Khosrowjah. He was nominated for the world music festival in 2004 (New York). His last live performance in Iran was a benefit concert for Bam (Kerman) earthquake resulting in a DVD that has just been released. He composed music theater for Tarabnameh 1 directed by Bahram Beyzaie\, In 2006 he moved to the US with new ideas in Fusion\, and he performed his music in Yoshi’s\, Red poppy\, central stage\, the palace of fine art. \nNima Hafezieh is an Iranian pianist and composer born in December 1994. \nHis parents found his talent in Piano performance and Classical music when he was 4 years old\, and supported him to pursue his passion for studying Piano and music composition. \nHe began to learn Iranian traditional music known as (Radif) and took private lessons in music dictation\, theory and composition\, and Classical piano performance from an early age. He studied Piano performance at Tehran music School and graduated with a BA in music composition from the art university of Tehran in 2017. His technique and vision are deeply rooted in Free improvisation\, Quartal and Quintal harmonic structures\, modal and microtonal language\, Middle-Eastern Maqam music\, and electro-ambient music with the influence of jazz fusion. Her musical style expresses the union of American Roots and Iranian Tradition\, a blend of folk\, soul and blues infused with Iranian vocals\, melodies and poetry. She combines her study of Iranian Classical music with her decades of experience in American songwriting craft to tell the story of her unique perspective with longing\, hope\, humor and depth.  \nAdrienne is a multi-instrumentalist and accompanies herself on guitar\, piano\, and Iranian Setar.  She began her exploration of traditional Iranian music in 2016 with renowned vocal artist Mahsa Vahdat. Since then\, has been awarded two grants by the Alliance of California Traditional Arts in order to develop her knowledge of Iranian classical vocal and instrumental music.   \nAaron Kierbel is one of the most innovative and in-demand drummers in the San Francisco Bay Area. Known for his dynamic and versatile approach\, Aaron has played and recorded with many top Bay Area artists such as Rupa and the April Fishes\, The Jazz Mafia\, Meklit Hadero\, Diana Gameros\, La Misa Negra\, The San Francisco Mime Troupe and many more. \nAaron grew up in Los Angeles\, CA\, absorbing the rich tapestry of music spilling out from its clubs and streets: jazz\, blues\, hip-hop\, classical Indian\, Latin\, funk and much more. He studied drum set with esteemed teachers such as Joe Porcaro and Earl Palmer\, then later with George Marsh\, Akira Tana and Pete Magadini in San Francisco. Aaron is a founding member of Rupa and the April Fishes\, a diverse and wildly talented group who makes a unique brand of music called “liberation music.” Since 2006\, the band has traveled to over 30 countries around the world and shared stages with Manu Chao\, Anjelique Kidjo\, Susana Baca and Iron Maiden. \nAaron is also a passionate and respected drum instructor\, known for his accessible and engaging approach to teaching all ages and skill levels. He is the founder of RhythmALLogy\, an organization which uses facilitated group drumming for building connection\, community and celebration.  \nPaul Martin Sounder  was born to a pianist and a drummer at Druid City Hospital October 3\, 1982 and grew up with piano lessons and baseball practice in bluesy Tuscaloosa\, Alabama. During the magical Summer before high school\, I picked up the bass and guitar and joined my first band\, Forgotten Daze. After countless gigs and a degree in English from the University of Alabama\, I committed my life to music. I moved to San Francisco in 2006 and began playing bass guitar\, Colombian maracas\, and West African drums\, writing music\, and touring the country with an experimental rock band Antioquia.  \nIn 2013\, after performing nearly a thousand concerts\, traveling across the country several times\, and releasing three studio albums and four live albums of original music\, the members of Antioquia decided to stop touring and take time to work on their own projects. Since then I’ve had the opportunity to write and record an album of my original music\, teach and learn from hundreds of fantastic students\, and perform and record with many inspiring musicians and songwriters in the Bay Area\, including three-time Grammy Award winner Fantastic Negrito\, flamenco guitar virtuoso Jason McGuire\, prolific songwriters Heather Normandale and Rachel Lark\, and Cumbia powerhouse La Misa Negra. \nLIVE PAINTING\n \nMara Lea Brown \nis a Bay Area Artist. Her work explores human singularity and relationships through charcoal drawing\, painting and mixed media with elements from nature. Mara was born in California\, grew up in Southern Spain and moved back to the USA as an adult. Incommensurability and a search for connection are always subtly present in her work. In her portraiture\, Mara enjoys the process of learning from the individual as well as from a phenomenological exploration of the human form.
