DESCRIPTION:Latino Fusion Music Rooted in the Indigenous\, the Andes  \n  \nAJAYU is a six piece band that plays Latino fusion music rooted in the indigenous cultures of the Andes. Their original compositions and modern sounds are produced by the combination of traditional Andean instruments-Zampoñas and Quenas (flutes)\, Bombo (Ecuadorian drum)\, and Charango (small 8 string guitar from Bolivia) and non traditional instruments-violin\, bass\, and guitar. Their lyrics are socially\, culturally\, and politically conscious. On Sunday\, March 3rd Red Reels and the San Francisco International Film Festival are teaming up to present a special program of shorts from the festival’s Global Panorama section. Go around the world with a selection of 2012’s best indie shorts directed by women from Spain\, Israel\, South Korea\, Japan\, Australia\, United Kingdom\, Canada\, and the US. From animation to drama\, these short films tell tales of love\, loss\, death\, and hope. In addition to the films\, YeYe Suarez will join us for a live acoustic set of soulful female vocals\, Afro-Latin rhythms\, and lyrical storytelling. \n  \nThe San Francisco International Women’s Film Festival (SFIWFF) has a long tradition of providing the community with some of the best films directed and co-directed by women from all over the world. Since 2004\, the SFIWFF has presented an elective program of narrative\, documentary and international features and short films. SFIWFF film screenings serve as a catalyst for creating and facilitating dialogue through the power of independent filmmaking\, and represent a range of perspectives\, both locally and globally. The festival celebrates the exceptional contributions of women in the world of cinema\, and represents a convergence of excellence in filmmaking from around the globe. \n  \n \n  \nAfro-Latin fusion defines the rhythms of YeYe Suarez. In her pieces she has investigated the sound and movement of insects\, as well as the physiological response of plants\, the human brain and her own body. Within these varied contexts her performance work investigates the interactive\, collaborative aspects of sound\, improvisation\, nature and society. \n  \n  \n  \nBay Area bassist Lisa Mezzacappa‘s new string group is inspired as much by the songs of Bob Wills as the string quartets of Bartok and the free jazz epiphanies of Billy Bang. DESCRIPTION:  \nFrom Puerto Rico: singer-songwriter Fernandito Ferrer \nBorn on july 27th 1978\, Fernando Antonio Ferrer Cruz has been a young pioneer among the new breed of singer-songwriters in Puerto Rico. He first appeared on stage in Lares ’97 and from then on has gotten himself known all around the Island and abroad. Originally from San German\, Ferrer draws from the Nueva Trova giants of the ‘70s but has also developed his own language within his work. His percussive guitar technique and impressive vocal abilities together with the good use of subtle yet powerful melody and poetic imagery puts this small-towner’s music in a much wider context. \n  \nHis style is best compared to the works of Tracy Chapman\, Annie D’Franco\, Antonio Caban Vale\, Silvio Rodriguez and Nick Drake. In January ’02 he published his self-produced dedut album “Después de Tanto Tiempo” recorded in Santo Domingo. In it he merged his prior influences as a drummer\, his love for jazz and his passion for folk music from around the globe. The end result is a soothing sound that although undeniably latin overcomes all territorial boundaries. Future events will feature co-presentations with local Bay Area film festivals like the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival\, CounterCorp Festival\, and the San Francisco International Women’s Film Festival. \n  \nRed Reels will kick off Sunday\, February 10th with a screening of Throw Down Your Heart\, directed by Sascha Paladino. The film follows American banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck on his journey to Africa to explore the little known African roots of banjo.
