DESCRIPTION:In this event\, co-founder of the Acentos Bronx Poetry Showcase Fish Vargas unites with the co-founder of The Acentos Review\, Raina J. León\, and former guest editor\, Bonafide Rojas in a powerful reading of new poetry. Acentos has shifted in forms for over 10 years – poetry showcase\, foundation\, and workshops. In the end Acentos Review creates a supporting environment for Latina and Latino artistic voices. There will be three featured poets and two open mic segments. It will be an event to remember\, and the first Acentos event held on the West Coast. \n \nFish Vargas is a Bronx born Nuyorican poet. He has shared his words and experience at countless poetry venues\, fundraisers\, festivals\, universities throughout NYC and the United States. In 2012\, he coached the Bay Area youth team that competed at Brave New Voices to a 4th place finish and in 2013 to a final stage appearance. \n \nBonafide Rojas has appeared on “Def Poetry Jam” season 4\, the documentary “Spitting Ink” and has been published in multiple anthologies and journals. He is the co-bandleader of experimental rock band the Mona Passage & has performed nationally and internationally. \n \nRaina J. They unabashedly break down genre barriers while reinterpreting the sounds of today’s jazz and other traditional music. Therianthrope debuted at the Loft in San Diego\, CA\, where they opened for Charlie Hunter and Scott Amendola on December 5th\, 2013. DESCRIPTION:The Sophisticated Ladies features Emilie Clamée and Rachael Magidson. Emilie mastered the flute and bansuri\, and has performed throughout Asia\, India\, Europe and in the US. Lead vocalist Rachael Magidson also shines on percussion and the trumpet. Having grown up in a family of musicians\, naturally music became Magidson’s preferred language of expression. \nTwo local pearls from Bay Area will be joining this pair this evening: Carlay Kay\, an upright bass player from New Orleans\, and Maya Kronfled\, a superb pianist nourished by the rich diversity of musicians in SF. Their live shows have been generating a buzz around the Bay Area. The two got their start when Scott had the vision of performing Duke Ellington’s “Far East Suite” in duo with Wil; a challenging task as the suite was originally written for a big band. With Wil’s knowledge of this tradition\, Scott’s desire to push boundaries and utilizing the Hammond organ to emulate the sound of big bands\, the duo was able to pull it off in a explorative\, yet cohesive manner. SUMMARY:Decolonize Your Diet
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we will share public health research that shows that recent Latino/a immigrants have better health than their American-born children. We will discuss the need for decolonizing our diets through reclaiming ancestral foods\, recipes\, cooking techniques\, and remedios. Our ancestors ate a plant-based diet\, with a heavy reliance on nixtamal corn\, beans\, wild greens\, nopales\, and other healthy vegetables. They used herbal teas and medicines to cure ailments. They ate in community and gave thanks to Mother Earth. Before colonization and capitalism\, food was consider to be sacred and the preparation of food was a spiritual practice. \n It is time to return to these ancestral ways. Our presentation will include a cooking demonstration and afterwards we will share a small tasting menu of cactus smoothies\, homemade corn tortillas\, and vegetarian tacos. This experience will be paired with poetry by Liz Hinojosa\, La Chankluda Boladora. \nLuz Calvo received her PhD in the History of Consciousness Program at UC Santa Cruz in 2001. She is an associate professor of Ethnic Studies at Cal State East Bay\, where she teaches a course entitled\, “Decolonize Your Diet: Food Justice in Communities of Color.” Luz traces her food genealogy to her paternal grandparents\, who ran a Mexican restaurant in San Fernando\, California\, from the 1940s through the 1970s. The Calvo business began when the grandparents began selling tacos to the cannery workers\, with her grandfather purchasing fresh\, seasonal ingredients from the LA Central market\, and her grandmother preparing and packaging the tacos. \n Liz Hinojosa is a graduate of California Institute of Integral Studies\, where she received a M.A. in Expressive Arts Therapy. \n Admission: $15-20. SUMMARY:Opening Reception of "The Mission Condition: Outwardly Mobile\," "Site In Progress\," & "Florecer"
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the opening reception of the Red Poppy’s current art installations. This reception is free and open to all ages. \n PROGRAM: \n 3PM – 4PM: Join the kids and parents at Family Art as we will decorate a few hopeful “sky-houses” by artist Mission Condition artist Dustin Fosnot and launch them into the sky! \n4PM – 7PM: Opening Reception for 3 installations: \n “The Mission Condition: Outwardly Mobile\,” a mural and assemblage collaboration by Mona Caron and Dustin Fosnot. The piece is a poetic expression of the precarious state that many communities find themselves in due to the current housing crisis and the gentrification of San Francisco. \n “Site in Progress” by Sebastian Alvarez. \nIn the tradition of process art\, this untitled exhibition will mature with research and dialogue with some of the artists\, tradition-bearers and cultural workers connected to the Red Poppy. The initial information presented on the wall is being collected from different local organizations and institution concerned with preserving the history of the Bay Area and researching its growth. Starting as a simple assemblage of info-graphics and data\, this installation will gather\, sort\, collate\, and associate qualitative data in order to generate poetic forms. \n “Florecer: Blossoming and Living with HIV: Overcoming Stigma Through Art” \nThis exhibition features masks and personal statements created by clients\, staff\, and community members of Clínica Esperanza\, the HIV Services Clinic at Mission Neighborhood Health Center. It was installed as part of the Red Reels film screening of ‘Blood Brother‘ on Thursday\, January 16th. Red Reels is an interdisciplinary film series that explores a unique interdisciplinary approach by incorporating real-time collaborations with artists from varying mediums like dance\, painting\, and live music. \n  5PM: A focused moment with a brief presentation of the art\, followed by: \n – Jorge Molina\, with opening words \n – Erin McElroy\, organizer of the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project will present some of their work and findings about the state of the City. The Anti-Eviction Mapping Project is a San Francisco Bay Area digital mapping and storytelling collective working to make visible what gentrification and displacement invisibilizes. http://www.antievictionmappingproject.net/ \n – Adriana Camarena will present a story on the theme of Home & Eviction from “Unsettlers: Migrants\, Homies\, and Mammas in the Mission District” – a collaboration with Shaping San Francisco\, and partially funded by a CalHumanities 2013 Community Stories Grant. www.unsettlers.org \n – Miguel Robles\, will present a poem from his book\, “At 24th and Mission” \n

DESCRIPTION:Carnival of Joy! a celebration of Hoagy Carmichael \n Led by Asher’s tenacious trombone and rich vocals\, this all-star ensemble from New York City’s vibrant early jazz scene presents a hot and charming celebration of one of the first great American singer-songwriters\, Hoagy Carmichael. Audiences should expect an evening of original songs inspired by and reverently re-imagined arrangements of Carmichael classics like “Stardust\,” “Up A Lazy River” and “Georgia On My Mind.” \n Hoagy Carmichael was an American composer\, pianist\, singer\, and bandleader. He is best known for composing the music for “Stardust\, “Georgia on My Mind”\, and “Heart and Soul”\, and is arguably one of the most renown song writers of the first half of the Twenty-First century. \n Emily Asher – Trombone and Vocals \nMike Davis – Trumpet\, Cornet and Vocals \nTom Abbott – Clarinet and Saxophones \nJay Lepley – Drums \nAdmission: $15-20. SUMMARY:Red Reels Presents: 'Blood Brother' (film)
DESCRIPTION:Red Reels Presents: ‘Blood Brother’ and the installation Florecer\, Blossoming and Living with HIV: Overcoming Stigma Through Art. \n  \n‘Blood Brother’ tells the story of Rocky Braat\, a young man from a fractured family and a troubled past who met a group of HIV positive children living in an orphanage while traveling through India without a plan. There Rocky witnessed the kids endure disease\, abject poverty\, and death. However\, in the midst of these troubles\, Rocky also saw the their deep joy. Changed by the encounter\, Rocky left his life\, friends\, and career in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania to live with the kids in India. ‘Blood Brother’ is a story of friendship. It’s a story of a life\, stripped down to its essence. Most of all\, it is a story about love\, enduring in the face of death. ‘Blood Brother’ is a documentary feature directed by Steve Hoover. \n  \nThe screening will also include a presentation and installation led by Eduardo Antonio of Clínica Esperanza\, the HIV Services Clinic at Mission Neighborhood Health Center. Eduardo will discuss his work with Clínica Esperanza and the installation featuring masks created by Clínica clients\, staff\, and community members for Florecer\, Blossoming and Living with HIV: Overcoming Stigma Through Art. This exhibition was originally created to commemorate World AIDS Day in December\, 2013. \n  \nRed Reels films highlight the work of local and emerging filmmakers and expose audiences to diverse global traditions. Screenings explore a unique interdisciplinary approach by incorporating real-time collaborations with artists from varying mediums like dance\, painting\, and live music. \n  \nAdmission: $10-15. Doors at 7pm. DESCRIPTION:Gautam Tehas Ganeshan sings classical Carnatic music with distinction\, innovation\, and an inimitable personal style. A member of the first group of resident performing artists at the Red Poppy back in 2007\, Gautam has galvanized the local scene as the director of the Sangati Center and as a musician with his ear to the ground. He has performed at the SFMOMA\, Palace of Fine Arts\, SFJAZZ\, Freight & Salvage\, Yoshi’s\, and Zellerbach Playhouse\, and has led workshops at the Asian Art Museum\, SF Conservatory of Music\, UC Berkeley\, Stanford Jazz Workshop\, and more. \nAdmission: $15-20.
