SUMMARY:Workshop: Writing and Painting with the Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:Taught by Todd Thomas Brown \nOne thing that is certain is that we all have ancestors. In fact\, we are made of them\, our biologies suffused with their characters and qualities. This 6-hour workshop is the first of a new series that Todd will be teaching in coming months\, relating artistic practice to investigations of self and ancestry. With exercises based on his last three years’ work on an interdisciplinary project called Teobi’s Dreaming\, this workshop is designed to combine writing practices with mixed media painting techniques as a way of inquiring into the complexities of our individual lives beyond the narrow definitions by which we are often defined. The workshop will involve varied writing exercises\, the results of which are introduced into the painting surface and continued through successive layers. DESCRIPTION:The Red Poppy is pleased to present a unique musical extravaganza delivered by La Peche\, a new group of young bay area musicians. This show will include a 30 minute introductory set\, setting a relaxing and mellow mood\, followed by the film screening\, a Q&A\, an intermission and ending with a more upbeat\, dancing set. The night will be centered around George Melies 1904 silent film “Journey Through the Impossible\,” and woven together by the three faces of the group’s music: the soul of traditional balkan music\, the freedom of jazz\, and the energy of hard rock. \nThese young artists bring a sound that is at the crossroads of European folkloric traditions and improvised performance. “La Pêche” is a French expression which refers to a heightened physical and spiritual state – a state which the group aims to convey with their wild improvisations\, deep soundscapes and fiery compositions. SUMMARY:Sureando: Rambling through the South
DESCRIPTION:A Concert Featuring South American Gems Mochi Parra and David Pinto \nBorn in the rural town of Parral\, Chile\, Mochi Parra began training as a concert cellist and performer at the age of five. Deeply rooted in Chilean folk songs\, her repertoire stretches to embrace musical influences from all over South and Central America as well as the Caribbean. Her captivating voice has been heard in combination with a number of remarkable musicians such as Carlos Hayre\, Juan Falu\, and Carlos Mejia Godoy. \nBerkeley Jazz School teacher David Pinto is internationally known for his work as music director\, arranger\, and bass player for Grammy-winner Susana Baca. He was a member of Peru Jazz\, a group highly praised for their innovation in encompassing Pervian roots. David also leads the group Syncopated Colors. \n  \n \n  \nMochi and David are teaming up to present a concert of South American musical jewels that will set a precedent for the boundless possibilities between the voice and a six-stringed bass. The two gave taste of their beautiful musical dialogue at the Encuentro Festival last December when presenting an arrangement of the late Rafael Manriquez’s “The Hand\,” and were said to have “created an exquisite orchestration.” It goes without saying that we are in for a treat! \n  \nAdmission: $10-15. DESCRIPTION:Acoustic Reggae\, New Beats\, and Blue Nights \nA quartet with an intimate history\, Kats and Mano Meet the Dragon have worked together for over three decades\, creating original compositions that encompass elements from roots reggae\, dancehall\, and ska\, to rock-jazz and R&B. At the core\, their eclectic style focuses on three part harmony\, percussive rhythms\, and a dual bass line played by two bass players. They are currently working on their third album\, which includes only original material. DESCRIPTION:Salaam\, Shalom\, Coming Together \nA concert of Prayer for Peace \nLior Tsarfaty is an internationally-touring singer\, songwriter\, recording artist and director of Prayer Songs Project\, an ensemble founded create a space where music from a diverse range of cultures and traditions could be combined and explored in unique ways. His debut CD “The Prayer Songs Project” features Tsarfaty’s warm\, textured vocals and other renowned musicians from Israel including Yossi Fine\, India\, Morocco and the United States Jennifer Berezan\, cellist Jami Sieber\, and pianist John R. Burr.
