Please come out for this exceptional evening of flamenco and to support the Red Poppy Art House on Friday\, August 14\, 2015. \nCast:\nYaelisa – dance\nJason McGuir – guitar\nJose Cortes – vocals\nMarlon Aldana – percussion\nPaul Martin Sounder – upright bass \nCaminos Flamencos’ mission is to enrich and educate the community by presenting innovative contemporary and traditional works which reflect the “nuevo flamenco” movement in Spain today. Since 1993\, Artistic Director Yaelisa has collaborated with artists in other mediums\, incorporating top musicians in the field of jazz\, Latin and Afro-Cuban music. Her choreographies have been commissioned by Collage Dance Theatre\, Malashock Dance & Company\, San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival\, Stanford Danza Espanola and the Internacional Certamen de Coreografía in Madrid\, Spain. \nDuring the last twelve years\, Yaelisa has spent extensive periods of time living and performing in Spain\, presenting her choreography there and in the U.S. Her choreographies have been commissioned by several modern dance companies\, including John Malashock & Company\, Rose Polsky and Collage Dance Theatre. In 1995\, she was one of 11 choreographers in Spain invited to present a piece at the prestigious Certamen de Coreografia in Madrid\, and the only American choreographer chosen among them. In 1996\, she returned to the U.S. where she continues to choreograph\, develop and train dancers for her company. Creating innovative theatrical presentations has established her as a choreographer of merit; she is the recipient of an Emmy Award for Choreography in 1993 for the PBS program\, Desde Cadiz a Sevilla\, and a Choreography Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1996. \n\nAdmission: $20-50. Marcus Shelby returns to the Red Poppy for the continuation of interactive discussions concerning our justice system.\n \nLed by composer\, bassist\, and bandleader\, Marcus Shelby\, the series will explore the prison industrial complex\, mass incarceration\, the school-to-prison pipeline\, the black prison movement\, incarcerated women\, restorative justice\, prison abolition\, and more. The evenings will include special guests\, readings\, live music\, recorded music\, poetry\, and video. These discussions are open to anyone interested in ending the prison industrial complex and how music and art can be used as a powerful vehicle in that process. \n \nDiscussion 3 features special guest speaker and SF native\, Kevin Epps\, a community activist and award-winning filmmaker. DESCRIPTION:As part of the programming for the August 1st MAPP\, the Red Poppy Art House and EDELO ‘Where the United Nations Used to Be’ invite the public for the closing ceremony of Our Built City\, the miniature city thriving on our corner of 23rd & Folsom. \nOver the past five months\, Caleb Duarte and Mia Eve Rollow of EDELO have been in residence as Artistic Directors in Rotation at the Poppy. For their final curated MAPP\, EDELO and collaborators occupy the center of the Art House to dig out the hidden histories buried beneath. Our Built City  becomes mobile and begins to occupy spaces in the Mission with the transformation of two shopping carts into a miniature city on the move. Displayed on the Poppy’s interior gallery walls are works created on materials found throughout the district. \nThe evening features both large-scale and miniature paintings created by Our Built City participants\, ranging from artists and immigrants to families and homeless neighbors. Emily Johnson/Catalyst also makes her return to the Bay Area with the premiere of SHORE\, the final work in a trilogy that began with Bessie Award-winning The Thank-You Bar. A multi-part\, multi-city project\, SHORE explores the complex connotations of the place we call home\, taking on questions of memory\, ancestry\, nature and community. In a curated reading (SHORE: Story)\, writers will present work that speaks to our inherent connection to and disconnection from home\, place\, land\, and each other. \nAugust 1st MAPP Schedule: \n2:00pm – 5:00pm: Family Art\nMobilizing Our Built City with painted wooden panels and decorated shopping carts. \n6:00pm – 7:30pm: Visual Art Exhibition\nDisplay of Our Built City paintings on found wood created by artists\, neighbors\, children\, immigrants\, and the homeless. Featuring a painting by Citlalli Aguilar\, a high school summer intern supported by Spotlight on the Arts (California Lawyers for the Arts). \n6:00pm – 7:30pm: Bringing Out the Dirt\nAn ongoing performance featuring recent immigrants crawling out of the wooden floor as they move dirt from one place to another. \n6:00pm – 10:00pm: Our Built City in the Mission\nAn ongoing performance carrying Our Built City throughout the Mission. \n7:30pm – 7:50pm: Persian Trio Group\nPersian folklore with classical\, jazz\, and flamenco influences. Johnson is a recipient of a 2014 Doris Duke Artist Award. Her work is currently supported by Creative Capital\, Native Arts and Cultures Foundation\, MAP Fund\, a Joyce Award\, the McKnight Foundation and the Doris Duke Residency to Build Demand for the Arts. DESCRIPTION:From classic jazz and blues to Afro-Brazilian/Peruvian rhythms\, two Bay Area-based bands\, Citizens Jazz and Sang Matiz join together for a special double bill at the Red Poppy Art House. \n\nCitizens Jazz is a collective of some of the Bay Area’s most talented jazz musicians led by bassist Caroline Chung. Although all the musicians are trained and educated in jazz\, their musical taste and influences cross all genres\, span many continents and are expressed in various ways. Their repertoire ranges from classic jazz\, bebop\, swing\, and blues to modern-day bossa nova\, samba\, rumba and Afro-Cuban. Caroline Chung is a long-time musician and activist in the Bay Area and can be seen performing all over with her many projects. \nFeaturing:\nCaroline Chung – upright bass\nDanny Brown – saxophone\nGaea Schell – piano\nMatt Swindells – drums \nSang Matiz describes its style as urban Afro-Brazilian flamenco\, though many other sounds blend into the colorful ensemble’s original music. The group began in early 2008\, taking its name from sang\, meaning ‘blood’ in French\, and matiz\, Spanish for ‘harmonious mixture’. In 2013\, Sang Matiz released Ship It\, the debut album which captures the energy of the group’s performances featuring mostly original songs. These compositions include influences of Afro-Peruvian and Afro-Brazilian sounds with flamenco\, funk\, reggae\, ska\, pop\, and R&B. He has performed with everyone under the sun and has composed music for big bands as well as small combos while building a name as a musical prodigy. \nGaea Schell\, a professional jazz pianist and vocalist\, recently made her California debut as a twice-featured performer at the San Jose Jazz Festival and has been performing professionally and internationally for many years in diverse contexts. Known among her peers for swinging every note\, subtle phrasing\, and honest lyrical writing\, this west coast-based pianist/composer/vocalist (also flutist) is a native of western Canada where she grew up playing music from an early age. Her experience includes everything from trio to quartet to orchestral performance. \nSince relocating from Manchester\, UK to San Francisco\, Matt Swindells has been busy playing drums with various Bay Area artists covering an entire spectrum of musical genres. Some of Matt’s career highlights include two world tours as drummer for electronica pioneers Fila Brazillia and playing with Australian multi-instrumentalist James Morrison at the Royal Albert Hall in London. DESCRIPTION:The Red Poppy Art House warmly welcomes the George Brooks Trio featuring pianist Osam Ezzeldin and bassist Kai Eckhardt\, presented through Jazz in the Neighborhood’s new monthly series at the Red Poppy. \nGeorge Brooks is a saxophonist and composer\, acclaimed for successfully bridging the worlds of jazz and Indian classical music. He founded the seminal groups grounded in Indian music: Summit with Zakir Hussain\, Bombay Jazz with Ronu Majumdar and Larry Coryell\, the Raga Bop Trio with Steve Smith and Prasanna and Elements with Gwyneth Wentink and Kala Ramnath.  \nRaised in Germany and Liberia\, Kai Eckhardt came to the USA in 1980 to study at the Berklee College of Music. Upon graduating Kai garnered world-wide recognition performing with the John McLaughlin Trio. The trio\, consisting of Kai\, John and Indian percussion phenomenon\, Trilok Gurtu\, recorded “Live at the Royal Festival Hall.” Kai\, touring the world with McLaughlin’s trio and later with Trilok Gurtu’s outstanding ensembles\, developed a remarkable facility with African and Indian rhythmic cycles. He combined these global rhythms with his love of funk and developed a unique slapping style simultaneously reminiscent of African kora and James Brown. \nOsam Ezzeldin was born in Cairo\, Egypt and grew up immersed in the music of North Africa. At the age of 18 he heard his first recording of jazz and his life immediately transformed. Osam embarked on a journey of self-directed jazz study and began a rapid rise to excellence\, soon becoming indispensable to leading jazz musicians of North Africa. Cressman has spent much of the last four years touring the jam band circuit with Phish’s Trey Anastasio\, while also performing with jazz luminaries Nicholas Payton\, Wycliffe Gordon\, and Peter Apfelbaum. \nGuitarist Mike Bono\, now age 24\, is a performer\, educator\, composer\, and recording artist. He began his musical career at the age of 5\, and at 18 he auditioned for Berklee College of Music and was the first guitarist in the school’s history to be awarded a Presidential Scholarship. While at school\, Mike formed The Mike Bono Group\, which released their debut record in September 2013\, entitled\, From Where You Are. Critically acclaimed as one of North America’s finest jazz musicians\, her new album\, House of Many Rooms\, sees the Brooklyn-based artist venturing into a more pop-oriented sound\, full of catchy hooks\, sweet melodies\, and anthemic musical arrangements. For this special album release concert\, Laila is backed by a six-piece ensemble that features strings and an award-winning rhythm section. \nHouse of Many Rooms is Laila’s first album of entirely original material\, and it also marks her first time arranging for gospel choir and string orchestra. Taking the best of pop\, rock\, classical\, world and soul\, Laila informs the sound with her expertise in jazz\, and weaves it into her original songs and arrangements. Lassiter is profiled in Julian C. R. Okwu’s book “Face Forward: Young African American Men in a Critical Age.” \nThis event also features guest poets Marvin K. White and Cedric Brown.  \nMarvin K. DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 37th Annual Carnaval San Francisco\, the Red Poppy Art House presents a weekend of performances highlighting music from Ivory Coast and the African Diaspora\, featuring Choro Bastardo on Sunday\, May 24th. \nUsing baroque\, early jazz\, and contemporary classical music as a springboard\, Choro Bastardo explores the different streams of music that share elements with the Choro tradition\, recreating the atmosphere of cabarets and vaudeville in Rio de Janeiro. Choro is a genre of traditional Brazilian instrumental music born during the early 20th century. Choro Bastardo combines the traditional Choro style with each of the band members’ different musical and cultural backgrounds to create a sonority that is different from the original\, yet loyal to the playful spirit of that music.
