DESCRIPTION:Interested in the intersection between jazz and the clarinet\, Ben Goldberg explores the rich traditions of the woodwind instrument found in klezmer music. Goldberg is widely recognized as one of the most accomplished clarinetists/composers working in today’s jazz scene. He studied with jazz legends Steve Lacy and Joe Lovano before going on to establish himself as a creative force alongside Bill Frisell\, Nels Cline and John Zorn amongst countless others. He will be joined by SF Bay Area drummer Hamir Atwal and guitarist Ila Cantor. \nHamir Atwal is an up-and-coming drummer/composer based around Berkeley\, CA. He graduated from Berklee College of Music and has performed with the Glimpse Trio\, tUneyArDs\, Bill Laswell\, and Joe Lovano. He was also a guest clinician/teacher at schools such as Oberlin College\, Peabody Conservatory\, Stanford University\, CalArts\, and the California Jazz Conservatory. Atwal is an active endorser of DREAM cymbals. \nlla Cantor is a dynamic\, award-winning guitarist and composer currently living in Oakland\, CA. She has trained in composition and both jazz and classical guitar with the New School University in New York and the Banff Center for the Arts in Alberta\, Canada. Additionally\, she has worked with renowned Argentine composer/pianist Guillermo Klein and mentors John Scofield\, John Abercrombie and Ben Monder. His fluid\, melodic style and keen compositional sense explore his country’s rich and diverse traditions\, both in original works as well as in arrangements of Brazilian classics. Peixoto has recorded\, performed\, and collaborated with Claudia Villela\, Flora Purim and Airto\, saxophonist Bud Shank\, percussionist Dom Um Romão\, Toots Thielemans\, Dori Caymmi\, Guinga\, Claudio Roditi\, guitarist Carlos Oliveira\, Marcos Silva and Terra Sul. DESCRIPTION:The Red Poppy Art House and Flying Under the Radar join together for a three-night co-production of artists from Brazil and the U.S.\, featuring Ian Faquini ft. Sandy Cressman & Colin Hogan (Thurs 1/7)\, Brazil Beat (Fri 1/8)\, and Ricardo Peixoto Quartet (Sat 1/9). \nIan Faquini is a Brazilian guitarist and singer who resides in Berkeley\, California. At the age of 15\, Ian became the mentoree of the legendary Brazilian guitar maestro Guinga. In a short amount of time\, Ian had become one of the most respected and exceptional guitar players in the San Francisco Bay Area\, demonstrating rare chordal technique and a special delicate touch on very difficult pieces. His last few summers have been spent in Brazil\, where he performed and studied with some of the country’s highest-level guitar players\, including Marcus Tardelli\, Guinga\, and others. Ian recently joined the faculty at California Brazil Camp\, is currently completing a degree at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley\, and has just released a new album of all original compositions with flutist Rebecca Kleinmann. Ian plays and sings originals\, as well as a large repertoire of sambas\, choros\, bossa novas\, and Brazilian classical guitar pieces. \nBorn in New York City and based in the SF Bay Area\, vocalist/composer Sandy Cressman began her career recording and performing with the vocal jazz group Pastiche before focusing on her passion for Brazilian jazz. She has toured the US\, Europe and Brazil performing with her group Homenagem Brasileira and collaborating with other Brazilian musicians and Brazilian music specialists. Most recently\, Sandy appeared as a special guest of SpokFrevo Orquestra on the Main Stage of Carnaval 2015 in Recife\, Brazil. She released two CDs of Brazilian jazz and will be releasing her third\, Entre Amigos\, in 2016. \nCurrently residing in Oakland\, CA\, Colin Hogan was a member of the world-renowned Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble while also studying with the jazz school’s founder\, Susan Muscarella. He then attended Cal State East Bay (Hayward) where he earned a BA in piano performance. Colin has performed on five continents and has performed with many legendary jazz musicians including James Moody\, Peter Erskine\, Bob Brookmeyer\, Roy Ayers\, and Maria Schneider. In 2004\, he performed with electric bass revolutionary Larry Graham of Sly and the Family Stone at the California Music Awards. Her grandfather was a well-known musician and composer from Madeira Island\, Portugal\, and she grew up singing fado with her mother. Ramana has been described by Mundo Portugues newspaper as the “New Voice of Portuguese World Music.” She has headlined the world’s largest Portuguese festival\, the New Bedford Portuguese Feast in Massachusetts\, and performed at the 2010 Encontro Festival in Macau. \nFátima Santos\, a native of Albergaria-A-Velha in northern Portugal\, began singing in church. Attracted by the operatic vocal technique used by Coimbra fado singers\, and inspired by great composers such as José Afonso and Luiz Goes\, Fátima began performing this type of fado along with other types of Portuguese vocal music. His series of interactive discussions\, Beyond the Blues: Ending the Prison Industrial Complex\, delves into our justice system\, its flaws\, and how music can be used as a tool for reform and change. \nFaye Carol is one of the premiere vocalists of her time with a career spanning over five decades. Arranging popular standards with doses of jazz\, blues and hip-hop\, Miss Carol has managed to cultivate a diverse sound throughout the years. DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Red Poppy Art House\, Byb & Kiandanda Dance Theater present Dance Africa Dance for Peace and Independence. The evening features performances by two African dancers/choreographers\, Ange Aoussou from Ivory Coast and Chris Babingui from the Republic of Congo. Performing their respective solo works\, J’aime le rouge and Nibo Nano\, these pieces touch on the social-political issues of the African continent that is still struggling to gain true independence and development. \nBorn in Divo (Ivory Coast)\, Ange Aoussou had trained in traditional African dance\, contemporary\, modern and jazz. Throughout her career\, she has collaborated with various choreographers from around the world and has worked with Koteba D’abidjan\, Institute Djolem of Abidjan\, Mr Salif Coulibaly\, and Souleymane Koly. \nChris Babingui was born in Enyelle in Congo. At the age of five\, he learned the ndombolo and other traditional dances of Congo through the imitation of his elders. After completing his secondary education in 2006\, Babingui started his artistic career dancing hip-hop as he joined the group\, Boom Danger of Massamba Brunel (aka “Flash”). He has since worked and toured internationally in Africa and Europe after joining the Studio Maho\, directed by choreographer Florent Mahoukou.\n \nAbout Kiandanda Dance Theater and Artistic Director Byb Chanel Bibene:\nKiandanda is an international dance company that does work between Africa\, Europe and the USA. Every year\, the company holds workshops\, the Nzela Program and the Rue Dance Festival\, which is held every two years in the Republic of Congo. As formerly named Studio Rue Dance\, Kiandanda Dance Theater is a laboratory\, a studio where everyone is invited to come and contribute to create the art through conferences\, performances and workshops. \nByb Chanel Bibene is a choreographer and performer working in theater and contemporary dance. His own technical and aesthetic sensibility is rooted in the culture and dances of his country of origin. SUMMARY:The String Quartet Experience: Nahuel Bronzini and the Amaranth String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The String Quartet Experience is Nahuel Bronzini’s arranging journey which joins together the sounds of singer-songwriting and a string quartet. Playing off of the expectations of what a classical string quartet should sound like\, Bronzini creates a heightened listening experience of textures and gestures that range between old and new. “I wrote a full string quartet arrangement for each piece in hopes of representing the emotions and images depicted through their music and lyrics\, while also printing my own voice as a composer. This is a true collaborative project that brings to life the musical beliefs\, fantasies and needs of both myself and the songwriters.” – Nahuel Bronzini\n  \nAn Argentinean guitarist and composer\, Nahuel Bronzini moved to San Francisco in 2010 after completing a degree in jazz at the Escuela de Música Contemporánea in Buenos Aires. Despite Bronzini’s love for popular music\, his urge to keep widening his music experiences led him to continue his studies in classical guitar at the San Francisco Conservatory. Bronzini’s original music explores themes of nostalgia and longing\, navigating sonorities from both the contemporary classical world as well as jazz and other pop culture-related music. He is also currently involved in several Bay Area music projects as a performer\, arranger and/or producer.\n\n  \nWith a love of tackling the string quartet canon and as fierce a passion for discovering newly composed works\, Amaranth was founded in 2013 and proudly calls the Bay Area home. Members Katie von Braun\, Abigail Shiman\, Erica Zappia\, and Helen Newby bring classical music beyond the concert hall\, striving to reach divergent audiences that range from high school classrooms to neighborhood bars alike. DESCRIPTION:The Red Poppy Art House warmly welcomes Arouna Diarra and Biko Casini for an evening of traditional music from Burkina Faso. Inspired by the pulsing melodies and infectious dance grooves of the balafon\, Biko traveled to Bobo-Dioulasso (Bobo)\, the artistic city of Burkina Faso\, to study the djembe in 2007. Arouna\, who comes from a family of musicians in Bobo\, moved to Asheville\, NC in 2012 where he established himself as the bandleader of Mande Foly. Destiny is the principal harpist for the Eddie Gale Inner Peace Orchestra\, the Oakland Community Orchestra\, and founder of The Destiny Muhammad Project. \nLaura Klein is a pianist/composer with numerous recordings of her original music that have received international airplay. She is the co-leader of FivePlay Jazz Quintet\, performs with the Morchestra\, and plays with many of the leading Bay Area jazz luminaries. She has appeared at Yoshi’s\, the SF Jazz Fes­ti­val\, KCSM’s Jazz on the Hill\, Vallejo Jazz\, the Cotati Jazz Festival\, San Francisco Performances\, and has performed with the SF Symphony. \nFeaturing:\nLaura Klein – piano\nDestiny Muhammad – harp\, vocals \nFollow Destiny on Facebook and Laura on YouTube. \n\nAdmission: $15-20.
