The heart is depicted as a dream\, a labyrinth\, and a space for connection and separation\, delving into the pain and hope tied to the organ that continuously beats like music within us. \nAs part of his emotional exploration of the heart\, Adrian will prepare ceviche\, a dish tied to his childhood and now a signature performance in his art. Additionally\, we’ll feature music by Lalin St. Juste\, a Haitian-American singer\, songwriter\, and producer whose work delves into themes of identity\, cultural heritage\, and the transformative power of rewriting stories. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS\n \nAdrian Arias (American born in Mochica Land in Peru)\nCurator/Live Painting/visual poetry \nAdrian Arias is an international multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of visual arts\, poetry\, performance\, and social justice. A descendant of the Mochica culture of ancient Peru\, he embraces his culture’s use of dreams as a transformative catalyst between reality and imagination. Arias has created large-scale murals for public and private businesses such as Google and a three-story mural at the corner of Turk and Hyde in San Francisco\, commissioned by the Luggage Store. He has recently created murals for Magic Theater\, Freight & Salvage and Red Poppy Art House. Is the co-founder of Mission Arts Performance Project MAPP.  \n  \n\nLalin St Juste\nHealing music \nLalin St Juste has been a staple in the Bay Area music scene for a decade with her genre-bending band The Seshen. In 2021 Lalin officially launched her solo career with the release of her debut EP entitled ‘behind my eyes’ via 7000COILS\, a label and art house she co-founded with Dan X (KKINGBOO) that is committed to elevating the queer voices of the African and Caribbean diaspora through the creation of digital and live portals and sacred play through a wellness lens. \nLalin returns in 2022 with the first of a two-part EP series\, the first entitled Vertulie; a powerful homage to her ancestors and Haitian spirituality. Thanks to funding from the Gerbode Foundation\, Lalin St Juste collaborated with Women’s Audio Mission\, an organization established to support women and nonbinary creatives in the music industry\, to record\, engineer\, mix and master Vertulie. \nNamed after Lalin’s maternal grandmother\, Vertulie is both a love letter and sonic healing balm. The EP starts with Psalms 91\, a prayer about protection recited in French by Lalin’s devout Christian mother\, Louise St Juste. It is then followed by a swell of Haitian drums and a Vodou song dedicated to the lwa of initiation – Ayizan Vele Kete. In creating this juxtaposition\, Lalin is healing the ways in which white supremacist religion has impacted her family; the blatant denouncement of Vodou for the sake of Christianity and the internalized assimilation and xenophobia around the Haitian language. The EP then moves to Roll Call\, a calling forth of the ancestors on Lalin’s maternal side\, the first being Dame Vertulie Valbrun\, Lalin’s maternal grandmother. She is currently an Artist-in-Residence and guest faculty at the School of Theatre & Dance\, University of South Florida (Tampa). Andrea has served as a consultant with Equity Quotient (EQ)\, Alternate ROOTS\, the Arts & Democracy Project\, and more. She is a former Artistic Director of New WORLD Theater (2004-09)\, and former Program Associate for Animating Democracy (2001-04). Andrea has a Masters degree in Performance Studies and a BFA in acting\, both from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. She currently serves on the Board of CAATA (Consortium of Asian American Theaters & Artists)\, and is a voting board member of Alternate ROOTS. She served on the International Management Committee of WPI (Women Playwrights International\, 2012-15)\, and is a member of RAWI (Radius of Arab American Writers).\n \nManaar Azreik\n \n\nManaar Azreik is a non-binary person who was born in the southern Israeli city of Be’er Sheva to Palestinian\, Christian Arab parents. Manaar grew up bilingual in Arabic and Hebrew and first learned English in a Bedouin elementary school. She became the seven-time national Israeli Judo champion and has had a lifelong journey to reconcile her identities and heritage as a modern Israeli and accept herself as a transgender person. She is a soul-centered transformation mentor\, leading humanity to a true realization of the divine self through expressive arts including movement\, sacred music\, and soul dancing. Her recent invention is named Transformation by Fire\, an organization that offers Healing and Recovery services in natural disaster areas. She is the CEO of Wholistic Solutions and the author of The Practice Of Trust Book.\n \nAmal Bisharat (she/her)\n \n\nAmal Bisharat (she/her) is a Palestinian American multidisciplinary artist: a theatre director\, theatre maker\, producer\, actor\, musician\, and photographer. Bisharat holds a BA in Music and Theater from Minnesota State University-Moorhead and for 12 years worked as a director and music director in partnership with San Francisco Unified School District. Bisharat is a grateful recipient of the Theater Bay Area Arts Leadership Residency Grant (2022-2023)\, Theater Bay Area CA$H Creates Grant (2022)\, and San Francisco Arts Commission Artist Grant (2023). Currently\, she works with Golden Thread Productions\, recently co-producing and directing for their signature program ReOrient Festival of Short Plays (2023)\, and directing an online reading of The Gaza Monologues by Ashtar Theater (2023). Bisharat is also in the process of creating her first musical\, “Mornings in Jenin Musical”\, a Palestinian refugee story adapted from the internationally best-selling novel by the same name by Susan Abulhawa. After many years of hiatus from acting\, Bisharat is thrilled to be returning to her roots this year to play the role of Safiyya in Golden Thread’s production of Returning to Haifa (2024) by Ghassan Kanafani\, adapted for the stage by Naomi Wallace and Ismail Khalidi. She is a board member of MENATMA (Middle East North African Theater Makers Alliance) and also serves on the Community Council for Golden Thread’s 2024 Season for Palestine. Bisharat is also a photographer with her own arts-focused photography company\, capturing the magic of professional dance\, theater\, and music performances for groups like Yerba Buena Gardens Festival\, Sarah Bush Dance Project\, and Alonzo King Lines Ballet. Bisharat believes in the transformative power of art and storytelling whether on a stage\, in a photograph\, or in the stories we tell ourselves.\n \nSophia Alawi\n \n\n\nSophia Alawi is a first-generation Muslim Moroccan/Italian American actress\, singer\, songwriter & writer. She has a BFA in Musical Theater from Rider University. She also studied at T’Schreiber\, Stella Adler Studio of Acting\, and The Barrow Group in New York. She’s so excited to be a part of this new musical that uplifts unrepresented Palestinian voices. She won the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle award for Best Featured Actress – Musical in 2019 for Groundhog Day The Musical and was named one of “Five Standout Performances” in 2019 by the Houston Chronicle for the role of Wendla in Spring Awakening. After moving to the U.S.\, Zina fell under the spell of the Eastern European Folklife Center Balkan Music Camps and picked up the accordion to play traditional music. The program engages the Red Poppy Art House’s surrounding neighborhood\, contributing to its vibrancy by offering free programming to the public one Saturday of the month from 12:00-1:30 p.m. at 2698 Folsom.\n \nAn outdoor open forum\, Family Art uses the exterior south wall of the Poppy and its wide adjacent sidewalk\, where volunteers bring out an array of art supplies and organize a different activity for participants each week.\n \nThe art and community facilitator creates a safe and creative space for families of all backgrounds to participate in open-ended art projects. Art projects happen either indoors or outside on the sidewalk as a way to engage with neighborhood families. He is also a composer and arranger. Ed began his musical studies with his father\, Gregorio Corzo\, a violinist with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. Initially\, Ed studied guitar and piano independently until age 21\, when he pursued formal education at the Ignacio Cervantes Conservatory\, graduating as a clarinetist. During this time\, he composed music for Cuban TV and served as the musical director of the Conjunto Nacional de Espectáculos. \nEd has toured extensively in Cuba\, Colombia\, Mexico\, Venezuela\, and the US\, where he explored various musical roots and expanded his repertoire to include a variety of genres. She has worked as a bilingual early childhood/youth educator for over 5 years using play-based and child-guided teaching as a way to promote social-emotional learning and development. In her free time\, she plays music\, spends time at the Jardin Secreto tending to plantitas\, and supports birthers in postpartum care ceremonies. The program engages the Red Poppy Art House’s surrounding neighborhood\, contributing to its vibrancy by offering free programming to the public one Saturday of the month from 12:00-1:30 p.m. at 2698 Folsom.\n \nAn outdoor open forum\, Family Art uses the exterior south wall of the Poppy and its wide adjacent sidewalk\, where volunteers bring out an array of art supplies and organize a different activity for participants each week.\n \nThe art and community facilitator creates a safe and creative space for families of all backgrounds to participate in open-ended art projects. Art projects happen either indoors or outside on the sidewalk as a way to engage with neighborhood families. She has created animations for documentary films about the 1960’s American civil rights movement\, the history of Japanese-American incarceration camps in California\, the impact of the criminal justice system on refugees\, and loss of native languages among immigrants. She is also a story artist on short animated films that bring BIPOC characters into surreal worlds. Sabina has been a teaching artist throughout San Francisco\, and has led co-creation workshops in the Bay\, in rural Jharkhand India\, and in Istanbul and Reyhanli\, Turkey. She has previously managed a puppetry and animation project with Syrian diaspora youth in Turkey\, and is currently designing and managing the “Shadow Movements” program as a Public Arts Manager at ARTogether. She is a nerd about traditional shadow puppets\, reads poems about horses\, and is interested in the relationship between diaspora and memory. \nIris Mendoza\nHi\, I’m Iris and I love art\, it’s something that has helped me get out of my problems\, many times I felt alone and sad but by making art I started to believe in myself and I realized that I can make someone better than me. What I thought\, art is not easy to do\, there are complications\, but that doesn’t stop me. I love art\, and thanks to it I have been able to smile again and in the future I want to be a great artist and see my parents proud of me\, that It is my wish. \nGia Ariela Pick Romero\nGia is a 19-year-old artist who since she was little liked to be around art\, she learned how to use a camera at the age of 5 years and she has been interested in art classes since 7. She is a very talented artist and has a great eye for photos when she is able to see beauty in this world.🌍 She loves to enjoy whatever she does with 100%. With instruction and guidance by ShadowLight teaching artists\, attendees will be given the opportunity to make a shadow puppet\, learn performance techniques\, and use our screen and lights to perform their own short plays. This event is appropriate for children ages 3 to 12. \nThis FREE event creates an opportunity for youth in our neighborhood (Mission)\, who may otherwise not be able to attend such an event for lack of funds\, to have access to art education with high caliber teaching artists. By providing an opportunity to watch\, interact and play\, we are encouraging participation and engagement with a vital storytelling art form. Storytelling is an important skill; it helps us to understand ourselves and one another\, encouraging empathy. \n\n  \nABOUT SHADOWLIGHT PRODUCTIONS: \nShadowLight Productions. On the first Saturday of every even month of the year\, the MAPP transforms ordinary spaces\, such as private garages\, gardens\, living rooms\, studios\, street corners\, and small businesses into pop-up performance and exhibition sites for a day/night of intimate-scale artistic and cultural exchange among a kaleidoscope of individuals and communities.  Due to COVID-19\, we had temporarily changed this dynamic program from an onsite to an online series. Thanks to the mastery and innovation of the presenting artists and curatorial vision we were pleased that the kaleidoscope of cultural exchange continued to be an incredibly enriching experience for the presenter and the viewer. A descendant of the Mochica culture of ancient Peru\, he embraces his culture’s use of dreams as a transformative catalyst between reality and imagination. This ancestral knowledge is used to connect artists and communities in collaborations that speak to equality\, liberation\, peace and beauty. He believes that creation goes beyond the result: that the fantastic is always written in the creative act. Arias has created large-scale murals for public and private businesses such as Google and the Luggage Store. As co-founder of Mission Arts Performance Project MAPP\, he conceptualizes and creates multi-sensory art experiences such as\, VideoFest\, Luna Negra\, and ILLUSION. His most ambitious project to date is Tarot in Pandemic & Revolution\, a multifaceted collaboration conceived and orchestrated by Arias where he engaged sixty two visual artists and poets in the creation of a community tarot deck that speaks to historic events that transpired over the pandemic. This diasporic longing has led them to return to Perú to reconnect with their roots and deepen their knowledge of Andean music\, history\, and Quechua. Ms. ubungen is a fourth-generation pilipina-american born and raised in San Francisco’s Fillmore. She trained and performed with the late great master Ed Mock who died of AIDs related causes in 1986. C. Riley III was Associate Puppet Designer of Toto for A.C.T.’s The Wizard of OZ\, Puppet Designer (and trainer) for Shotgun Players’ Wolf Play\, and was Puppet Coordinator\, Performer\, and Puppet Fabricator for Shadowlight Productions’ Sojourner ZY. Fred has worked and toured in the US and internationally. He cast and trained puppeteers in Japan and choreographed puppets for Ping Chong’s Kwadan and Obon. He was the assistant director and performer on the 2019 UNIMA award-winning Feathers of Fire. He has taught puppet theory and manipulation\, and directed and written\, for The Center for Puppetry Arts. He now works as a core member of Shadowlight Productions and Artistic Director for Driveway Follies (a Halloween marionette review). His movement company Odd Savvy\, was awarded a production grant in 2024 by The Jim Henson Foundation for his new work\, The Ground. \n  \nABOUT THE WORKSHOP:  \n\nRed Poppy Art House has partnered up with ShadowLight Productions for free monthly programs by ShadowLight artists for children and families. With instruction and guidance by ShadowLight teaching artists\, attendees will be given the opportunity to make a shadow puppet\, learn performance techniques\, and use our screen and lights to perform their own short plays. This event is appropriate for children ages 3 to 12. \nThis FREE event creates an opportunity for youth in our neighborhood (Mission)\, who may otherwise not be able to attend such an event for lack of funds\, to have access to art education with high-caliber teaching artists. By providing an opportunity to watch\, interact\, and play\, we are encouraging participation and engagement with a vital storytelling art form. Storytelling is an important skill; it helps us to understand ourselves and one another\, encouraging empathy. \n\n  \nShadowLight Productions was founded in 1972 by filmmaker/theatre director/shadow artist Larry Reed. DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\nStory Circle – 11Reflections: San Francisco\nCommunity Story Circle @ Red Poppy  \nThis Story Circles workshop\, facilitated by Andrea Assaf\, is part of a series inviting Southwest/Central Asian and North African (SWANA)\, Middle Eastern/North African/South Asian (MENASA)\, and Muslim American artists\, BIPOC artists and allies\, and impacted communities in the Bay Area to participate in workshops\, creative writing\, and theatre-making in response to the question: What has the impact of the post-9/11 era been in your city\, and how does it connect to what’s happening today in Palestine? \nThis FREE workshop is offered in conjunction with a new project\, 11Reflections: San Francisco\, devised and directed by Andrea Assaf\, featuring Syrian vocalist Lubana Al Quntar and Turkish violinist Eylem Basaldi\, premiering October 4-5\, 2024 at Brava Theatre. This project is the second in a new national series of performance works\, Eleven Reflections on the Nation. The 2018 publication\, “Our Spirits Carry Our Voices\,” led the poets to Ghana for a slam. The viewer’s attention is guided through projected moving images\, hand-made animation\, and cast shadows with a multi-dimensional soundscape. Collapsing and expanding time\, species will live and die over the span of an hour of looping overlapping\, multichannel\, and multidirectional projection. In a sculptural environment\, our role as animals within a system and as the planet’s apex predator is illuminated. \nAs in proto-cinematic cave paintings and ancient shadow theatre storytelling traditions\, Facing West Shadows seeks to understand non-human species and our relationships with them. Among their inspirations are the Bay Area’s own precarious and diverse ecologies and Eadweard Muybridge’s electro-photographic investigation of consecutive phases of animal movements.
