DESCRIPTION:Bay Area-based Brazilian guitarist Ricardo Peixoto returns to the Red Poppy alongside Rio de Janeiro-based guitarists Rogério Souza and Edinho Gerber (Duo Violão Brasil). Performing original compositions\, as well as a traditional repertoire from composers like Pixinguinha\, Baden Powell\, and Tom Jobim\, the trio will spend the evening exploring the many styles of 20th-century Brazilian music. \nFeaturing:\nRicardo Peixoto\, Rogerio Souza\, Edinho Gerber – guitar\n \nGuitarist/composer Ricardo Peixoto is among the top representatives of Brazilian guitar in the United States today. Born in Rio de Janeiro\, his fluid melodic style and keen compositional sense explore his country’s rich and diverse traditions\, both in original works and arrangements of Brazilian classics. He has recorded and performed with Claudia Villela\, Flora Purim and Airto\, Bud Shank\, Dom Um Romão\, Sivuca\, Toots Thielemans\, Dori Caymmi\, Guinga\, Claudio Roditi\, and Terra Sul. In addition to his work as a performer and composer\, Ricardo is well respected as a teacher and lecturer on Brazillian music. \nA master of 6- and 7-string guitars\, Rogério Souza is one of the foremost representatives of music from Rio de Janeiro. He has worked as musical director and producer with a multitude of world-class Brazilian musicians\, including Baden Powell\, Paulinho da Viola\, Sivuca\, Ney Matogrosso\, Altamiro Carrilho\, João Bosco\, Paulo Moura\, Ivan Lins\, Guinga\, and Turíbio Santos. Rogério performs regularly throughout Latin America\, the United States\, Europe\, and Asia. \nBeing the son of a Brazilian mother and an American father\, guitarist/composer Edinho Gerber possesses a rich musical vocabulary developed in the two countries. Navigating effortlessly between the genres of choro\, jazz\, samba\, and blues\, he is always in search of the intersection points within his dual cultural identity. Edinho was a staple in the Chicago music scene for many years and has experience playing with a number of Brazilian groups based in the United States. DESCRIPTION:Ya Layl presents “Mostly Middle Eastern\,” a program of Arabic\, Turkish\, Armenian\, and other music performed by Sarah Michael\, Peter Maund\, and Suellen Primost. Special guest Niko Bakulich joins the trio for an eclectic evening of lively dance numbers\, modal improvisations\, American standards\, and medieval pilgrim songs. \nFeaturing:\nSarah Michael – kanun (Arabic zither)\nSuellen Primost – cello\nPeter Maund – percussion\nNiko Bakulich – bass\n \nKanun player Sarah Michael has been studying and performing Middle Eastern music for the past 15 years. Beginning her career as a viola da gamba player\, Sarah has studied with composer and accordion virtuoso Elias Lammam. She has performed with Aswat\, Flowers of the Nile\, the Mevlevi Mutrib\, El Alzifoon\, and her own quartet\, Zamanna. \nPeter Maund studied percussion at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and music\, folklore\, and ethnomusicology at the University of California\, Berkeley. Described by the Glasgow Herald as “the most considerate and imaginative of percussionists\,” he can be heard on over 50 recordings. Maund\, a founding member of Ensemble Alcatraz and Alasdair Fraser’s Skyedance\, has performed with a number of early and contemporary music ensembles. \nSuellen Primost is a conservatory-trained cellist\, composer\, and recording artist. She was principal cellist with the Taos Chamber Orchestra and co-founded Sedona’s first “Jazz on the Rocks” festival before moving to California in 2002. She has served as music director for Artship Ensemble in San Francisco and continues to perform with musicians\, poets\, and artists spanning many different genres. SUMMARY:Red Poppy Art House Presents: Crossover Collaborative Residencies
DESCRIPTION:Crossover Collaborative Residencies provides a framework to support the exploration of collaborative processes between artists in dance and music disciplines. Pairing six choreographer/dancers and six composer/musicians\, the program follows a four-stage development from preliminary artists gatherings and orientation workshops\, to early-stage “raw” presentations of works-in-progress\, a middle-stage free community-engaged presentation\, and a final performance/presentation. \nWith support from the Kenneth Rainin Foundation and San Francisco Arts Commission \n \n\nAbout the Artists (Cohort 1):\n \nSandra Lawson-Ndu is an Oakland-based musician. As a vocalist and songwriter\, she has contributed to and collaborated on a number of live and recorded projects\, including works with DJ Center (Everything in Time LP) and Nomadic Wax (Diaspora Mix Tape Volume 2). She helped found and organize the Trinity International Hip Hop Festival\, and in the last two years\, she has been invited to participate in both the Zoo Labs Artist Residency and Revolutions Per Minute Artist Lab. Currently\, Sandra is co-leading the band Bells Atlas and working on her solo project. \n  \nLaura Larry Arrington is a dance-artist working in hybrids of idea and practice. Her work in dance (time/space/body/whole) pivots around a desire to orient towards the capacities in us all that can glimpse unseen and unutterable horizons. She is a member of the Montclair Women’s Big Band\, the Mara Performance Collective\, Ends Meat’ Catastrophe Jazz Ensemble\, and the Oba/Bastian duo. She received her BM in Jazz Piano Performance from Oberlin Conservatory and her MA in Music Composition from Mills College. \n \n  \nSAMMAY is a Bay Area-based emerging choreographer/producer and interdisciplinary performing artist of Kapampangan\, Ilokano\, and Bikol descent. Her work has been performed at SOMArts Bay Gallery\, Diego Rivera Art Gallery\, Dance Mission Theater\, and Oracle Arena among others. She is the founder and producer of URBAN x INDIGENOUS\, an inter-generational multi-disciplinary arts festival which celebrates the indigenous spirit in the urban environment of our present day. \n  \nDaniel Riera is a flutist\, EWI player\, bassist\, producer\, composer\, and sound designer from San Francisco. He is active as a stage performer with groups such as Soltron\, Camille Mai\, as well as his own ensemble. His musical training began at the age of ten with Latin-jazz flute virtuoso and composer John Calloway.  Daniel continued his studies at San Francisco’s School of the Arts High and Berklee College of Music\, where he earned his degree in Music Synthesis. Since 2012\, Daniel has been an instructor at Academy of Art University teaching music theory and notation. He is also involved with the group Today’s Future Sound which provides music production education to underserved middle and high school communities in the Bay Area. \n  \nLatanya d. Tigner is a choreographer who has performed professionally with Dimensions Dance Theater since 1986. She has studied and toured nationally and internationally\, performing multidisciplinary works rooted in African diasporic dance forms. Latanya holds a B.A. in Physical Education/Dance\, a Master’s Degree in Arts Administration\, and currently teaches dance at Contra Costa College. Her current research and study of the Second Line parading traditions of New Orleans has enabled her to create one of her most notable pieces\, The Last Dance/St. Anne and N. Rampart. DESCRIPTION:Master percussionist Faisal Zedan returns to the Red Poppy Art House alongside multi-instrumentalist Gari Hegedus for an evening of music rooted in Turkish\, Arab\, and Greek traditions. Displaying a dynamic approach to rhythm and melody\, the duo enthusiastically rejuvenates classic styles of Middle Eastern drumming. \nFeaturing:\nGari Hegedus – Turkish and Arabic ouds\, saz\nFaisal Zedan – derbakki\, riqq\, and frame drums \nBorn in Lebanon and raised in Syria\, Faisal Zedan grew up impassioned with the derbakki (Arabic drum). At the age of 15\, after intensive study with a local drummer\, Faisal became exposed to a wide repertoire of Arabic classical and contemporary music. Faisal is affiliated with several groups including Kan Zaman\, Qadim\, Stellamara\, and Aswat Ensemble. In addition to his collaborations with local and international artists\, Faisal has taught at music camps\, conducted workshops around the world\, and produced instructional DVDs on derbakki fundamentals\, and Arabic percussion. \nGari Hegedus is an accomplished performer and composer who specializes in oud\, saz\, violin\, and a wide range of stringed instruments from Greece and Turkey. Beginning his musical career playing the fiddle and mandolin\, Gari has since performed and trained in the traditional music styles of Ireland\, Scotland\, France\, Turkey\, North Africa\, and the Middle East for over 20 years. For many years\, he toured with the Mevlevi Order of America\, and he continues to participate in Turkish ceremonial gatherings around the country. \n\nAdmission: $15-20. Doors at 7:00pm. SUMMARY:August 6th MAPP: "Surface" Artist Reception & Crossover Collaborative Residencies
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit Surface: Rodney Ewing & Joyce Nojima brings together works on paper by the two Bay Area artists. Ewing and Nojima have created work offering a transmutation of tactile and visual experience across the surface of the paper. This pairing allows for exploration of the various ways in which this familiar material is treated and how the marks made upon the surface may evoke diverse readings and interpretations. The curators\, Modesto Covarrubias and Monica Lundy\, present these works in the performance space of Red Poppy Art House with an aim to spark a dialogue between music\, voice\, movement\, and the act of seeing. With an interest in how to interact and live with art\, the curators seek out work that enlivens and engages the space in which it exists. \nCrossover Collaborative Residencies provides a framework to support the exploration of collaborative processes between artists in dance and music disciplines. She received her BM in Jazz Piano Performance from Oberlin Conservatory and her MA in Music Composition from Mills College. \n \n  \nSAMMAY is a Bay Area-based emerging choreographer/producer and interdisciplinary performing artist of Kapampangan\, Ilokano\, and Bikol descent. Her work has been performed at SOMArts Bay Gallery\, Diego Rivera Art Gallery\, Dance Mission Theater\, and Oracle Arena among others. She is the founder and producer of URBAN x INDIGENOUS\, an inter-generational multi-disciplinary arts festival which celebrates the indigenous spirit in the urban environment of our present day. \n  \nDaniel Riera is a flutist\, EWI player\, bassist\, producer\, composer\, and sound designer from San Francisco. He is active as a stage performer with groups such as Soltron\, Camille Mai\, as well as his own ensemble. His musical training began at the age of ten with Latin-jazz flute virtuoso and composer John Calloway.  Daniel continued his studies at San Francisco’s School of the Arts High and Berklee College of Music\, where he earned his degree in Music Synthesis. Since 2012\, Daniel has been an instructor at Academy of Art University teaching music theory and notation. He is also involved with the group Today’s Future Sound which provides music production education to underserved middle and high school communities in the Bay Area. \n  \nLatanya d. Tigner is a choreographer who has performed professionally with Dimensions Dance Theater since 1986. She has studied and toured nationally and internationally\, performing multidisciplinary works rooted in African diasporic dance forms. Latanya holds a B.A. in Physical Education/Dance\, a Master’s Degree in Arts Administration\, and currently teaches dance at Contra Costa College. Her current research and study of the Second Line parading traditions of New Orleans has enabled her to create one of her most notable pieces\, The Last Dance/St. Anne and N. Rampart. His musical studies have taken him through the various programs at the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts\, San Francisco Conservatory of Music\, SFYO\, Stanford Jazz Workshop\, and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Jaz has worked with many notable artists including Wynton Marsalis\, Abbey Lincoln\, George Benson\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Phil Lesh\, and Dee Dee Bridgewater in some of the world’s premier concert venues. \nSarah Voynow has performed extensively with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra\, the San Francisco Symphony\, the San Francisco Opera Orchestra\, and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. She earned a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from Juilliard and has performed in numerous recordings at Skywalker Sound. As a performer with the ensemble Richard Stoltzman and Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd\, she played on the Grammy-nominated recording of Stravinsky’s Ebony Concerto. A highly versatile musician\, Sarah also plays rock and roll with an electric harp. \nBay Area native Cava Menzies is a classically trained jazz pianist\, composer\, producer\, and educator. In 2001\, she received a BA from the Berklee College of Music in Boston for jazz piano and music education\, and in 2008\, she received her MM from the University of Miami where she studied composition and music production and recording. Her musical talents extend from collaborations with various hip hop\, soul\, jazz\, and Latin artists\, to film documentaries. DESCRIPTION:The Village Road Trio reimagines classical music with their folkloric instrumentation for a program of spirited and expressive sounds. From American bluegrass and swing\, to Romanian tunes and favorite classical melodies\, the trio takes on an extensive range of styles. \nFeaturing:\nAlisa Rose – violin\nRob Reich – accordion\nDaniel Fabricant – bass\n \nBassist Daniel Fabricant grew up in Ashland\, Oregon\, where he began playing guitar and trumpet in grade school. Since moving to the Bay Area ten years ago and transitioning to double bass\, he has performed as a freelance sideman for numerous national acts. Locally\, he is a member of the SF Weekly “Best Jazz Band” award-winning Nice Guy Trio\, Los Boleros\, Lavay Smith and the Red Hot Skillet Lickers\, and other classical chamber groups\, orchestras\, and dance bands. He has worked various theater companies as well as in high school and university musical theater productions. \nRob Reich grew up in Long Island\, New York studying piano from age three. After graduating with a degree in Music Composition from Oberlin Conservatory of Music\, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area\, where he discovered the accordion\, now his primary instrument. Whether it’s composing art songs based on the poetry of E. E. Cummings with Tin Hat\, writing circus music for Circus Bella\, or pioneering new jazz repertoire for accordion with the Rob Reich Trio\, his music combines strong melodic ideas\, rhythmic drive\, and a spirit of irreverence and experimentation. \nFiddler and violinist\, composer and improviser\, Alisa Rose easily navigates between many musical styles. With roots in classical music as well as American traditional music\, she attracts attention with her expressive lyrical voice on the violin. Alisa is a member of the Real Vocal String Quartet\, Supermule\, and the Club Foot Orchestra. From 2008 to 2012\, she was a member of Quartet San Francisco; their record QSF Plays Brubeck was nominated for a Grammy in 2009\, for which Alisa was featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition.\n \n \n\nAdmission: $10-20.
