Items for sale include metal prints\, Voodoo Kitties\, photographic magnets\, paintings\, coloring zines\, Psychogeographic Art ‘Kerchiefs\, and more! You can even order a custom neon pop art portrait and participate in an art project. Entry is free and donations are accepted. All donations will be split evenly among the artists! All ages are welcome too! \nThe Poppies is a part of Wyman’s Artist-in-Residency\, A Feast of Communities\, at the Red Poppy Art House. Over 2017\, Wyman\, in community with Zena Carlota and Shree Shyam Das\, will be hosting otherworldly dinner parties that engage diverse communities in San Francisco—queers and gender rebels\, born and bred Mission District residents\, and international migrants who work at tech companies. Crystal Mason and Stella Adelman join Wyman\, Carlota\, and Das as co-hosts of individual dinners to ensure each one has its own flavor and aesthetic rooted in the communities identified by the core team. \nA Feast of Communities is rooted in the Red Poppy Art House’s core practices of facilitating socially-engaged professional development\, producing vigorous and multidisciplinary programming\, playing matchmaker among friends and strangers\, and honoring that which is slow. He composes and performs with major symphony orchestras\, chamber orchestras\, new music ensembles\, string quartets\, cello quartets\, big bands\, jazz combos\, rock bands\, world music ensembles\, theater companies\, radio productions\, ballet companies\, modern dance companies\, and circus troupes. \nPraised by the New York Times for his “outrageous fiddling\,” violinist Matthew Szemela crosses genres with ease. SUMMARY:Gari & Faisal: Middle Eastern Melody & Rhythm
DESCRIPTION:Multi-string player Gari Hegedus and Arabic percussionist Faisal Zedan return to the Poppy with a concert of original compositions by Hegedus and traditional instrumental music from various regions in the Middle East. Their focus: Dialogue and interplay between melody and rhythm.\n \nGari Hegedus began devoting his life to music more than 25 years ago with the study of early European\, Celtic\, and Bretagne music. From there\, he was led east into the intense practice and performance of Turkish classical and Mevlevi ceremonial music. His repertoire and playing styles span outward from Turkey to Greece and the Arab lands\, as well as to Iran and India. He plays the oud\, violin\, and saz\, and has expressed his talent on many other instruments\, including mandocello\, sarod\, and setar. As a composer and musician\, Gari utilizes maqam\, the various Eastern modal systems\, and has developed the art of improvisation (taqsim) to a soulful level for which he has become highly recognized. \nBorn in Lebanon and raised in Syria\, Faisal Zedan grew up impassioned with the derbakki (Arabic drum). At the age of 15\, after intensive study with a local drummer\, Faisal became exposed to a wide repertoire of Arabic classical and contemporary music. In addition to his collaborations with local and international artists\, Faisal has taught at music camps\, conducted workshops around the world\, and produced instructional DVDs on derbakki fundamentals and Arabic percussion. DESCRIPTION:The Red Poppy is proud to present an evening with Spanish guitarist/composer Javier Jimenez’s Barrio Manouche\, purveyors of original\, instrumental jazz manouche\, and the Mallar Bhattacharya Band\, a Bay Area-based traditional North Indian ensemble.
