His latest curriculum\, We Charge Genocide Again\, has been used as an educational and organizing tool throughout the country. \nPeck The Town Crier has been recording and performing “hist-hop” and “song-rap” since 1994. His music has been featured on MTV UK\, Current TV\, and the Wall Street Journal online. Peck teaches guitar in San Rafael and can often be found crying a capella on the corner of 16th and Mission. \nBonnie Wai-Lee Kwong is an artist in many mediums and languages: Cantonese\, English\, Mandarin\, Japanese\, Ruby\, and Javascript. Her first book of poetry\, ravel\, is a finalist for New Rivers Press’ Many Voices Project and the White Pine Press Poetry Prize. Her work has garnered a number of Pushcart nominations and an artist residency at Stanford University. \nJosiah Luis Alderete is a full-blooded Pocho Indio who refries his beans and poems in Spanglish. All ages are welcome too! \nThe Poppies is a part of Wyman’s Artist-in-Residency\, A Feast of Communities\, at the Red Poppy Art House. Festival\, dedicated to radical theater-making and performance\, is part of a collaborative effort between the California Institute of Integral Studies and the University of Chichester in West Sussex\, England. The mission of the festival is to break traditional norms for both audience and performers\, and to introduce groundbreaking live art to San Francisco audiences while consistently redefining what it means to be N.E.W. (For more information\, go to www.thenewfestival.com.) \nOn April 1\, MAPP’s schedule of experimental live art and innovative collaboration begins at 7:15pm and ends at 10pm. SUMMARY:Gari & Faisal: Middle Eastern Melody & Rhythm
DESCRIPTION:Multi-string player Gari Hegedus and Arabic percussionist Faisal Zedan return to the Poppy with a concert of original compositions by Hegedus and traditional instrumental music from various regions in the Middle East. Their focus: Dialogue and interplay between melody and rhythm.\n \nGari Hegedus began devoting his life to music more than 25 years ago with the study of early European\, Celtic\, and Bretagne music. From there\, he was led east into the intense practice and performance of Turkish classical and Mevlevi ceremonial music. His repertoire and playing styles span outward from Turkey to Greece and the Arab lands\, as well as to Iran and India. He plays the oud\, violin\, and saz\, and has expressed his talent on many other instruments\, including mandocello\, sarod\, and setar. As a composer and musician\, Gari utilizes maqam\, the various Eastern modal systems\, and has developed the art of improvisation (taqsim) to a soulful level for which he has become highly recognized. \nBorn in Lebanon and raised in Syria\, Faisal Zedan grew up impassioned with the derbakki (Arabic drum). At the age of 15\, after intensive study with a local drummer\, Faisal became exposed to a wide repertoire of Arabic classical and contemporary music. In addition to his collaborations with local and international artists\, Faisal has taught at music camps\, conducted workshops around the world\, and produced instructional DVDs on derbakki fundamentals and Arabic percussion.
