DESCRIPTION:A native New Yorker of Indian origin fluent in Spanish\, Portuguese\, and French\, acclaimed composer/jazz vocalist Kavita Shah incorporates her ethnographic research on Brazilian\, West African\, and Indian musical traditions into her original repertoire. At her first Red Poppy show since 2014\, expect to hear songs from her discography\, as well as selections from her upcoming album of duets with bassist François Moutin. \nFeaturing:\nKavita Shah – vocals\nJulian Shore – piano\nFrançois Moutin – bass\nFerenc Nemeth – drums \nHailed by NPR for possessing an “amazing dexterity for musical languages\,” Kavita Shah makes work in deep engagement with the jazz idiom while addressing and advancing its global sensibilities. She has sung her music at notable festivals and concert halls throughout North America\, Europe\, and Australia\, and she has worked with such artists as Lionel Loueke\, François Moutin\, Sheila Jordan\, Martial Solal\, Greg Osby\, Steve Wilson\, and Yacouba Sissoko. Named by DownBeat as Best Graduate Jazz Vocalist (2012)\, and recipient of ASCAP’s Young Jazz Composers Award (2013)\, Shah holds a master’s in jazz voice from Manhattan School of Music and a bachelor’s in Latin American studies from Harvard. Her album Visions\, co-produced by guitar virtuoso Lionel Loueke (Herbie Hancock\, Dave Holland)\, was dubbed a “sparkling debut” (Boston Globe)\, “daring and ambitious” (Jazzwise)\, and Best Vocal & Debut Album of 2014 (Will Hermes\, Rolling Stone). DESCRIPTION:Art can be used to bring awareness. Through art and culture\, we can learn to identify with each other and explore what we all have in common. In a journey of peace and understanding\, we can explore the six countries on Donald Trump’s travel ban\, which are a source of rich music and art. We are inviting the artistic ambassadors of these Muslim countries to lay down the drawbridge to their countries’ soundscape and beauty\, and invite us all in. \nIn today’s America\, there is a lack of awareness of the unknown. Put in front of a map\, most Americans cannot identify the location of the countries currently listed as America’s number-one enemies and the source of terror. This will be the first showcase of many to come later this year. Art will break down the barriers that isolate us. The barriers that either governments or media have worked hard to create. \nSo many have been suffering from a lack of understanding and from this travel ban in particular. This is the year for us to make art in order to make a stand. Let’s stand to welcome the culture of the unknown\, make ourselves aware of those that came to this country for a better life just as our ancestors. \nFinally\, since we will have ongoing events\, we are asking artists from Iran\, Syria\, Libya\, Sudan\, Yemen\, or Somalia to please get in touch with us!\n \nABOUT MAPP:\nLaunched in 2003\, the Mission Arts & Performance Project (MAPP) is a homegrown bi-monthly\, multidisciplinary\, intercultural happening that takes place in the Mission District of San Francisco. Come by and feel the harmony between the sonic and visual arts!\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nMimi Herrera-Pease is a San Francisco-based painter who was born in Mexico City. Under the tutelage of the late Carlos Villa\, a Guggenheim Fellow\, Herrera-Pease learned technique and self-expression through oil painting at the San Francisco Art Institute. The immediacy of action painting and abstract expressionism became her vocation. Influenced by the New York School of Abstract Expressionism\, Bay Area Figurative\, and Neo-Expressionist movements\, she honed her skills as an abstract painter.\n \nABOUT THE CURATORS:\nElena Mencarelli moved to San Francisco after concluding her Master Degree in Visual Arts at the University of Bologna\, Italy. Previously\, she was the artistic director of the Make Your Mark Art Gallery in Melbourne\, Australia. In addition to her artistic practice and curatorial background\, she is also engaged in art criticism. Elena is the co-writer of the catalogue of the double exhibition Maria Rebecca Ballestra – Alan Sonfist\, a better landscape (Unimedia Modern Contemporary Art\, Genova\, Italy) and is the author of Maria Rebecca Ballestra\, a phenomenology of posthumanism\, soon to be published in both Italian and English. \nZena Carlota is a multi-instrumentalist\, singer\, and visual artist based in the Bay Area. Her traditional background in kora and West African harp has inspired her to combine her love of classical West African string music with Appalachian folk\, Delta blues\, and soul to create narratives of memory and migration in the African Diaspora. An accomplished visual artist\, Zena finds it a natural progression to apply in her own art the same themes of ritual and tradition found in West African music. DESCRIPTION:Trio Colibri is comprised of John Santos\, Jose Roberto Hernandez\, and Manuel Constancio\, three stalwart Bay Area musicians drawn together by a common passion for the lyrical and poetic music of Latin America. Using guitars\, Afro-Latin percussion\, and beautiful vocal arrangements\, they transport audiences to other countries\, realms\, and eras – always with an element of originality – while honoring profound musical traditions and innovators. Mambo\, bolero\, son\, joropo\, and guaracha are some of the rhythms they use\, igniting dancers and daring concert audiences to stay still in their seats. \nFeaturing:\nJose Roberto Hernandez – vocals\, guitar\nManuel Constancio – vocals\, guitar\nJohn Santos – percussion \nJose Roberto Hernandez is a highly respected multi-instrumentalist\, singer\, composer\, arranger\, producer\, musical educator\, and ethnomusicologist. He was born in the city of Cardenas\, Tabasco\, Mexico\, surrounded by master folklorists. He is a unique artist whose devotion\, creativity\, and studies in the genres of traditional music from Mexico\, Venezuela\, Colombia\, Bolivia\, Peru\, Cuba\, Puerto Rico\, Brazil\, and Argentina have earned him great recognition and fan appreciation. \nLearn more: Website \nBay Area native Manuel Constancio Jr. is an accomplished and versatile guitarist/vocalist whose 25-year association with the Navy Band found him directing the NATO Band in Naples\, Italy; on Treasure Island\, in San Francisco; and in San Diego\, California. He was the Navy’s first “minority” band director. He co-directs the band Sabrosito with his brother José. \nJohn Santos\, a multi-Grammy nominee and San Francisco Latino Heritage Arts Awardee\, is one of the foremost bandleaders\, composers\, producers\, percussionists\, and educators in Afro-Latin music. He has worked with acknowledged masters\, including Tito Puente\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Max Roach\, Cachao\, Eddie Palmieri\, and Omar Sosa.
