Molly’s music\, often intertwined with the elements of North Indian raga\, experimental vocals\, or playful free-form improvisation\, also reveals the rhythmic and note-bending influences inherited from the music of the African diaspora. \nFeaturing:\nFrank Martin – piano/arrangements\nJeff Chambers – bass\nDeszon Claiborne – drums \nMolly Holm is an unconventional singer/composer who blends jazz\, improvisation\, and North Indian raga\, reflecting her studies with master vocalist Pandit Pran Nath. Singing with Bobby McFerrin’s original Voicestra\, Molly has also performed with composer Terry Riley\, tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain\, choreographer June Watanabe\, and George Coates Performance Works. Other projects include collaborations with African-American roots-music vocalist Linda Tillery and Indo-fusion saxophonist George Brooks. SUMMARY:Redwood Tango Ensemble: Modern Tango and Original Chamber Music
DESCRIPTION:Oakland-based Redwood Tango Ensemble presents a concert of new works written by bandoneonist Charles Gorczynski. The sextet focuses on writing that is both fundamentally based in tango and reaching towards a personal and imaginative sound. The new works are influenced by contemporary tango groups in Argentina\, modern chamber music\, film music\, and improvised music.  \nFeaturing:\nCharles Gorczynski – bandoneón\nKendra Vernon – violin\nMia Bella D’Augelli – violin\nAnton Estaniel – cello\nElyse Weakley – piano\nDaniel Fabricant – double bass \nRedwood Tango Ensemble is dedicated to performing and studying traditional Argentine tango music\, which has made them popular with dance communities in the Bay Area and on tour. Their arrangements are inspired by the styles of Anibal Troilo\, Carlos DiSarli\, Osvaldo Pugliese\, and other master orchestras in tango. The group has been a consistent and strong presence on dance floors\, playing for hundreds of milongas since their inception in 2011. The sextet\, the featured orchestra for Chicago Tango Week in 2013 and 2015\, has performed for milongas in San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, Portland\, Seattle\, Chicago\, Montreal\, NYC\, and dozens of cities in-between. The ensemble keeps a highly active presence in the Bay Area tango scene\, and tours regularly as the full sextet or as the Redwood Tango Trio. DESCRIPTION:Saxophonist Tom Griesser and his longtime collaborators\, bassist Ollie Dudek and drummer Dan Foltz\, present selections performed during their three-year stint at the Burritt Room in San Francisco\, as well as new compositions to honor visionaries and rebels in a variety of endeavors. The trio draws from a wide range of influences\, including 1930s Benny Goodman\, 1940s Ellingtonia\, the Sonny Rollins Trio recordings of the 1950s\, hard bop classics\, and avant-garde figures such as Odean Pope and Roswell Rudd. \nFeaturing:\nTom Griesser – tenor saxophone\nOllie Dudek – bass\nDan Foltz – drums \nSaxophonist Tom Griesser has been performing on the San Francisco scene for 25 years\, starting with the swing revival of the 1990s and branching out with a straight-ahead jazz quintet\, the Section 8 Project. Since then\, he has been a longtime member of both the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra and Brass Monkey Brass Band\, recording several albums with both ensembles. DESCRIPTION:Music\, poetry\, history\, and future converge powerfully when three poets–Tongo Eisen-Martin\, Bonnie Kwong\, and Josiah Luis Alderete–explore themes of immigration\, migration\, language\, cultural identity\, social justice\, revolution\, and love through collaborations with guitarists Peck the Town Crier\, Oliver Mok\, and Eli Carlton-Pearson. \nFeaturing:\nLOAN (Tongo Eisen-Martin\, poetry; Peck the Town Crier\, guitar)\nContraband (Bonnie Kwong\, poetry; Oliver Mok\, guitar)\nFried Axolotl (Josiah Luis Alderete\, poetry; Eli Carlton-Pearson\, guitar) \nTongo Eisen-Martin is a movement worker\, educator\, and poet who has organized against mass incarceration and extra judicial killing of black people throughout the United States. His latest curriculum\, We Charge Genocide Again\, has been used as an educational and organizing tool throughout the country. \nPeck The Town Crier has been recording and performing “hist-hop” and “song-rap” since 1994. His music has been featured on MTV UK\, Current TV\, and the Wall Street Journal online. Peck teaches guitar in San Rafael and can often be found crying a capella on the corner of 16th and Mission. \nBonnie Wai-Lee Kwong is an artist in many mediums and languages: Cantonese\, English\, Mandarin\, Japanese\, Ruby\, and Javascript. Her first book of poetry\, ravel\, is a finalist for New Rivers Press’ Many Voices Project and the White Pine Press Poetry Prize. Her work has garnered a number of Pushcart nominations and an artist residency at Stanford University. \nJosiah Luis Alderete is a full-blooded Pocho Indio who refries his beans and poems in Spanglish. Naina\, a RAW residency artist at SAFEhouse and artist-in-residence at OACC\, was chosen to perform at the APERTURE Festival in 2016. \nEast Bay visual artist Salma Arastu practices Eastern spirituality through Western techniques of painting using mixed media. His interests rotate around composing instrumental music\, writing songs\, and performing all styles of jazz\, experimental\, and purely improvised music\, as well as traditional music of the Balkans\, Greece\, Macedonia\, Turkey\, and the Arab world. These interests have coalesced into his primary ensemble of late\, the Americana-influenced Broken Shadows.
