SUMMARY:Degenerate Art Ensemble: Skeleton Flower (TWO NIGHTS!)
DESCRIPTION:Degenerate Art Ensemble’s Skeleton Flower is an immersive performance that combines rich imagery\, live music and song\, visceral solo dance\, and storytelling ritual. The work will be performed in a rare duo performance by the company’s two co-artistic directors\, dancer Haruko Crow Nishimura and musician/composer Joshua Kohl\, over two nights at the Poppy. \nFeaturing:\nHaruko Crow Nishimura – dance\, voice\nJoshua Kohl – guitar\, electronics \nDegenerate Art Ensemble has shown their work throughout the U.S. and Europe known for their large-scale dance and theater projects\, concerts\, site-transforming spectacles\, and ongoing public experimentation. Recent highlights of the group’s work include a major exhibition at the Frye Art Museum in 2011\, a commission by director Robert Wilson to interpret his opera Einstein on the Beach in 2012\, and a collaboration with the Kronos Quartet in 2013. In 2012\, Degenerate Art Ensemble was commissioned by the city of Seattle to create a massive site-specific work\, titled Underbelly\, in collaboration with Olson Kundig Architects to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Seattle World’s Fair. At their first Red Poppy show\, expect to hear selections from their upcoming debut album. \nFeaturing:\nLiza Wallace – harp\, vocals\nJosh Johnson – saxophone\nRyan Knudsen – percussion \nJosh Johnson is an alto/soprano saxophonist and composer recognized for his unique sound and captivating approach to improvisation. He has performed with Wayne Shorter\, Herbie Hancock\, Lalah Hathaway\, Robert Hurst\, Esperanza Spalding\, and Aretha Franklin. He is a graduate of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance and has received numerous awards\, including the 2015 ASCAP Young Jazz Composer award for his composition “Remember Forgot” and 1st place in the Civic and Arts Foundation’s Jazz Composition Competition for “Comrade Napoleon.” \nPercussionist Ryan Knudsen can be found playing weekly with legendary blues guitarist Pete Anderson\, traveling and playing with the swinging blues/rock outfit Slim Jenkins\, all over the country with the Los Alamitos High School show choir program\, and hosting his own podcast\, “Ryan is Super Strong!” Ryan has studied with percussion mentors Steve Houghton\, Michael Spiro\, and Kevin Bobo and has lead groups like the Media Noche Trio and recorded with artists such as Sylvia McNair. Ryan currently teaches at Mater Dei Catholic High School\, Los Alamitos High School\, and the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. \nHarpist\, singer\, and composer Liza Wallace brings a new dimension to the harp’s role in contemporary music. Originally from San Francisco\, CA\, she has traveled around the world to study\, teach\, and perform\, most recently touring in Mexico\, Brazil\, and Germany. She has performed and recorded with such artists as Sir Elton John\, the Dear Hunter\, Kristin Chenoweth\, Gonzola Grau\, Pablo Aslan\, and frequently performs with the San Francisco Bay Area’s Awesöme Orchestra Collective. Originally from Toronto\, Canada\, and based in NYC\, she has performed throughout North America and Europe. DESCRIPTION:Polish pianist Joanna Rozewska and Russian cellist Yulia Fomicheva\, two highly respected international competition winners and alumna of San Francisco Conservatory\, will present an evening of piano and cello music by Chopin\, Myaskovsky\, Rachmaninov\, and other great Polish and Russian composers. \nFeaturing:\nJoanna Rozewska – piano\nYulia Fomicheva – cello \nYulia Fomicheva is a cellist and cello teacher born in Moscow\, Russia. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from renowned institutions in Moscow and a professional studies diploma from San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Fomicheva\, who has won numerous international music competitions\, has performed as a soloist and as a member of ensembles and orchestras in the U.S.\, Russia\, China\, England\, and Germany. She has been teaching privately and at different music institutions\, including the Musical-Pedagogical Institute in Moscow for more than 10 years. \nJoanna Różewska is a Polish pianist currently living in California\, who has won second prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Hartford\, Connecticut; second prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Mariánské Lázně (Czech Republic); and first prize at the COOP Music Awards – Prize Antonio Bertolini in Milan (Italy). Guskin preserves those threads through a collection of photos and ubiquitous objects mapping a history of missed meetings\, dreams\, and unfathomable mysteries that connect the individual to humanity; she questions herself about the past and the possibilities of what exists outside of what we see. DESCRIPTION:Internationally acclaimed fado artist Ramana Vieira returns to the Poppy for an evening of ballad-style fados and uptempo compositions from her latest album. \nFeaturing:\nRamana Vieira – vocals\nEla Polak – violin\nBrad Bivens – guitar\nLeo Nobre – bass\nSteve Fowler – bass\nOthers – TBA \nRamana Vieira\, described by Mundo Portugues newspaper as the “New Voice of Portuguese World Music\,” has headlined the world’s largest Portuguese festival\, the New Bedford Portuguese Feast in Massachusetts\, and had her song “Unido Para Amar” played for the 2006 Winter Olympics opening ceremony. Ramana and her group perform traditional\, ballad-style fados that pay homage to Amália Rodrigues\, the “Queen of Fado\,” as well as uptempo compositions from Vieira’s 2015 album\, Fado Da Vida\, which features three songs nominated for the International Portuguese Music awards.
