SUMMARY:Tana Quincy Arcega: "Development and Maintenance" Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of Development and Maintenance\, the new solo exhibition by Tana Quincy Arcega at the Red Poppy Art House\, which revolves around the meaning of these pivotal systems within our culture and within contemporary art. The artist turns mass-produced\, functional\, and disposable items (such as spackling compound\, aluminum window screens\, shellac\, and upholstery fabrics) into artistic tools\, giving them new existence through the poetic vision.\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nTana Quincy Arcega has a BFA in painting and sculpture from the University of Nebraska and an MFA in figurative painting from the New York Academy of Art. She has had several solo exhibitions at venues including the Foundry Art Center in Missouri and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art in Nebraska. She has shown locally at CounterPulse\, Root Division\, and Adobe Books Backroom Gallery amongst others. Her story “Overcoming Obstacles” along with her mouth paintings were featured in Her Living magazine in 2013. Tana has worked professionally as a children’s book illustrator\, muralist\, portrait artist\, and educator. DESCRIPTION:Music\, poetry\, and future converge powerfully when Bonafide Rojas\, Tongo Eisen-Martin\, Bonnie Kwong\, and Josiah Luis Alderete explore themes of imperialism\, cultural identity\, cultural resistance\, love\, and revolution through collaborations with guitarists Peck the Town Crier\, Oliver Mok\, and Eli Carlton-Pearson.\n \nFEATURING:\nBonafide Rojas – poetry\, guitar\nTongo Eisen-Martin – poetry\nPeck the Town Crier – guitar\nBonnie Kwong – poetry\nOliver Mok – guitar\nJosiah Luis Alderete – poetry\nEli Carlton-Pearson – guitar\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nBonafide Rojas is the author of four collections of poetry: Notes On The Return To The Island\, Renovatio\, When The City Sleeps\, and Pelo Bueno. He’s appeared on Def Poetry Jam\, been published in numerous anthologies and journals\, and is the vocalist/guitarist for the Mona Passage\, who released their debut EP in 2016. He’s performed at various stages\, including Lincoln Center\, the Brooklyn Museum\, El Museo del Barrio\, Bowery Ballroom\, the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre\, Rotterdam Arts Center\, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe\, BusBoys & Poets\, and  Festival De La Palabra.\n \nBorn in San Francisco\, Tongo Eisen-Martin is a movement worker\, educator\, and poet who has organized against mass incarceration and extrajudicial killing of black people throughout the United States. His curriculum on extrajudicial killing of black people\, We Charge Genocide Again\, has been used as an educational and organizing tool throughout the country. His book of poems Someone’s Dead Already was nominated for a California Book Award. His latest book\,  Heaven Is All Goodbyes\, is the 61st City Lights Pocket Poets book.\n \nPeck The Town Crier has been recording and performing “hist-hop” and “song-rap” since 1994. His music has been featured on MTV UK\, Current TV\, and the Wall Street Journal online. Peck teaches guitar in San Rafael and can often be found crying a capella on the corner of 16th and Mission.\n \nBonnie Wai-Lee Kwong is an artist in many mediums and languages: Cantonese\, English\, Mandarin\, Japanese\, Ruby\, and JavaScript. Her first book of poetry\, ravel\, is a finalist for New Rivers Press’ Many Voices Project and the White Pine Press Poetry Prize. Her work has garnered a number of Pushcart nominations and an artist residency at Stanford University.\n \nJosiah Luis Alderete is a full-blooded Pocho Indio who refries his beans and poems in Spanglish. DESCRIPTION:Bay Area-based quartet WaterSaw and brass band Sisu Brassland make their Red Poppy debut with a body of music exploring the raw beauty and viscerally moving aspects in the transition from life to death. Through the layering of musical textures\, WaterSaw’s sound is sparse\, ethereal\, rhythmic\, and sometimes haunting. Sisu is a Finnish word that translates to spirit\, resolve\, mettle\, tenacity\, and courage. Together\, “Beautiful Death” exhibits this confluence of dark and light.\n \nFEATURING:\nWaterSaw\nNicole Laby – vocals\, percussion\, guitar\nMichael Tornatore – drums\nMark Fasset – bass\, guitar\nMia Pixley – cello\, vocals \nSisu Brassland\nAaron Priskorn – trumpet\n(Other members TBA)\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nWaterSaw is a group of musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area. Winner of the 2012 Isadora Duncan award\, WaterSaw’s music is composed for modern dance choreography\, film scores\, and live performance. Creating layers of sound through loopers (recording devices)\, WaterSaw uses their instruments in both conventional and experiential ways\, giving way to an array of textures and sounds.\n \nAaron Priskorn has played trumpet for more than two decades\, exploring many genres of music\, while staying true to his classically trained roots. He recently released Matka\, an album of his compositions for brass. A founding member of brass trio Lip Service and nine-piece brass band Sisu Brassland\, Aaron can also be heard with Grace Cathedral\, Classical Revolution\, Green Street Mortuary Band\, and the rock band Melvoy. He has performed with Wayne Shorter\, Herbie Hancock\, Lalah Hathaway\, Robert Hurst\, Esperanza Spalding\, and Aretha Franklin. He is a graduate of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance and has received numerous awards\, including the 2015 ASCAP Young Jazz Composer award for his composition “Remember Forgot” and 1st place in the Civic and Arts Foundation’s Jazz Composition Competition for “Comrade Napoleon.” \nPercussionist Ryan Knudsen can be found playing weekly with legendary blues guitarist Pete Anderson\, traveling and playing with the swinging blues/rock outfit Slim Jenkins\, all over the country with the Los Alamitos High School show choir program\, and hosting his own podcast\, “Ryan is Super Strong!” Ryan has studied with percussion mentors Steve Houghton\, Michael Spiro\, and Kevin Bobo and has lead groups like the Media Noche Trio and recorded with artists such as Sylvia McNair. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from renowned institutions in Moscow and a professional studies diploma from San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Fomicheva\, who has won numerous international music competitions\, has performed as a soloist and as a member of ensembles and orchestras in the U.S.\, Russia\, China\, England\, and Germany. She has been teaching privately and at different music institutions\, including the Musical-Pedagogical Institute in Moscow for more than 10 years. \nJoanna Różewska is a Polish pianist currently living in California\, who has won second prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Hartford\, Connecticut; second prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Mariánské Lázně (Czech Republic); and first prize at the COOP Music Awards – Prize Antonio Bertolini in Milan (Italy).
