DESCRIPTION:“Testimony\,” a reprise of Cellista’s performance art piece “Wants\,” confronts issues of identity\, loss\, displacement\, and acceptance within the Bay Area arts community\, is an avant-garde response to the experiences of artists during these uncertain\, sour times. The evening features sound design and performance by Cellista\, choreography by Lilith Ransom of Ransom Dance\, and the ambient music of composer and guitarist Joshua Icban. \nFeaturing:\nCellista – cello\, live score\nLilith Ransom – choreography\, dancing\nJoshua Icban – guitar \nCellista is an acclaimed American cellist and the artistic director of the for-profit performing arts company Juxtapositions. She is known for her multidisciplinary installations\, which involve collaborations with artists across various media and across a range of genres including pop\, hip-hop\, and classical. Both of his recent groups\, Joey Ramone and the Dynamics\, perform around the Bay Area. \nLilith Ransom grew up training and choreographing with the Santa Cruz Ballet Theater\, moving on to study with the RDA/P Craft of Choreography Conference\, Pacific Northwest Ballet\, American Ballet Theater\, and LINES Ballet. After a career that included work with the Nashville Ballet\, Los Angeles Ballet\, and the Missouri Contemporary Ballet\, she began teaching youth at the Presser Performing Arts Center in Mexico\, Missouri\, as well as choreographing for the Missouri Contemporary Ballet and her students. Under the tutelage of the late Carlos Villa\, a Guggenheim Fellow\, Herrera-Pease learned technique and self-expression through oil painting at the San Francisco Art Institute. The immediacy of action painting and abstract expressionism became her vocation. Influenced by the New York School of Abstract Expressionism\, Bay Area Figurative\, and Neo-Expressionist movements\, she honed her skills as an abstract painter.\n \nABOUT THE CURATORS:\nElena Mencarelli moved to San Francisco after concluding her Master Degree in Visual Arts at the University of Bologna\, Italy. Previously\, she was the artistic director of the Make Your Mark Art Gallery in Melbourne\, Australia. In addition to her artistic practice and curatorial background\, she is also engaged in art criticism. Elena is the co-writer of the catalogue of the double exhibition Maria Rebecca Ballestra – Alan Sonfist\, a better landscape (Unimedia Modern Contemporary Art\, Genova\, Italy) and is the author of Maria Rebecca Ballestra\, a phenomenology of posthumanism\, soon to be published in both Italian and English. \nZena Carlota is a multi-instrumentalist\, singer\, and visual artist based in the Bay Area. Her traditional background in kora and West African harp has inspired her to combine her love of classical West African string music with Appalachian folk\, Delta blues\, and soul to create narratives of memory and migration in the African Diaspora. An accomplished visual artist\, Zena finds it a natural progression to apply in her own art the same themes of ritual and tradition found in West African music. SUMMARY:Redwood Tango Ensemble: Modern Tango and Original Chamber Music
DESCRIPTION:Oakland-based Redwood Tango Ensemble presents a concert of new works written by bandoneonist Charles Gorczynski. The sextet focuses on writing that is both fundamentally based in tango and reaching towards a personal and imaginative sound. The new works are influenced by contemporary tango groups in Argentina\, modern chamber music\, film music\, and improvised music.  \nFeaturing:\nCharles Gorczynski – bandoneón\nKendra Vernon – violin\nMia Bella D’Augelli – violin\nAnton Estaniel – cello\nElyse Weakley – piano\nDaniel Fabricant – double bass \nRedwood Tango Ensemble is dedicated to performing and studying traditional Argentine tango music\, which has made them popular with dance communities in the Bay Area and on tour. Their arrangements are inspired by the styles of Anibal Troilo\, Carlos DiSarli\, Osvaldo Pugliese\, and other master orchestras in tango. The group has been a consistent and strong presence on dance floors\, playing for hundreds of milongas since their inception in 2011. The sextet\, the featured orchestra for Chicago Tango Week in 2013 and 2015\, has performed for milongas in San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, Portland\, Seattle\, Chicago\, Montreal\, NYC\, and dozens of cities in-between. The ensemble keeps a highly active presence in the Bay Area tango scene\, and tours regularly as the full sextet or as the Redwood Tango Trio. DESCRIPTION:Bay Area-based Brazilian guitarist Ricardo Peixoto welcomes São Paulo pianist/arranger/composer Felipe Senna for an evening of original compositions\, as well as selections of Brazilian classics\, including choro\, samba\, baião\, and bossa nova. \nFeaturing:\nRicardo Peixoto – guitar\nFelipe Senna – piano \nOriginally from Rio de Janeiro\, guitarist/composer Ricardo Peixoto is among the top representatives of Brazilian guitar in the U.S. today. His fluid\, melodic style\, original harmonic approach\, and keen compositional sense explore Brazil’s rich and diverse traditions\, both in his original work as well as in arrangements of Brazilian classics. His recording and performance credits include Claudia Villela\, Flora Purim and Airto\, Bud Shank\, Dom Um Romão\, Sivuca\, Claudio Roditi\, Toots Thielemans\, Dori Caymmi\, Guinga\, Arturo Sandoval\, Spok\, Jovino Santos Neto\, Paul MCCandless\, and Terra Sul. He has performed throughout the U.S.\, Europe\, Canada\, Japan\, and Brazil. \nFelipe Senna was born in São Paulo\, where he began his musical education at the age of 6. Surrounded by music lovers and amateur players in his German-Brazilian family\, Senna was the first to follow the path professionally\, initiating his career as a pianist at age 14. Senna has performed as music director\, arranger\, and pianist for many artists\, including Toquinho\, Claudete Soares\, Jane Duboc\, Airto Moreira\, Nailor Proveta\, and Filó Machado.
