The trio draws from a wide range of influences\, including 1930s Benny Goodman\, 1940s Ellingtonia\, the Sonny Rollins Trio recordings of the 1950s\, hard bop classics\, and avant-garde figures such as Odean Pope and Roswell Rudd. \nFeaturing:\nTom Griesser – tenor saxophone\nOllie Dudek – bass\nDan Foltz – drums \nSaxophonist Tom Griesser has been performing on the San Francisco scene for 25 years\, starting with the swing revival of the 1990s and branching out with a straight-ahead jazz quintet\, the Section 8 Project. Her first book of poetry\, ravel\, is a finalist for New Rivers Press’ Many Voices Project and the White Pine Press Poetry Prize. It’s the perfect spot to check out fine art works and handcrafted merchandise. Pick up something for yourself or a loved one. Items for sale include metal prints\, Voodoo Kitties\, photographic magnets\, paintings\, coloring zines\, Psychogeographic Art ‘Kerchiefs\, and more! You can even order a custom neon pop art portrait and participate in an art project. Entry is free and donations are accepted. All donations will be split evenly among the artists! All ages are welcome too! \nThe Poppies is a part of Wyman’s Artist-in-Residency\, A Feast of Communities\, at the Red Poppy Art House. Over 2017\, Wyman\, in community with Zena Carlota and Shree Shyam Das\, will be hosting otherworldly dinner parties that engage diverse communities in San Francisco—queers and gender rebels\, born and bred Mission District residents\, and international migrants who work at tech companies. The purpose of A Feast of Communities is to foster relationships\, conjure magic\, and share stories. Crystal Mason and Stella Adelman join Wyman\, Carlota\, and Das as co-hosts of individual dinners to ensure each one has its own flavor and aesthetic rooted in the communities identified by the core team. \nA Feast of Communities is rooted in the Red Poppy Art House’s core practices of facilitating socially-engaged professional development\, producing vigorous and multidisciplinary programming\, playing matchmaker among friends and strangers\, and honoring that which is slow. Another root comes from Wyman’s approach of cultivating circle-based models of creation and exchange that foster understanding\, empathy\, and complexity across age\, identity\, culture\, and expression. Together\, this unique residency will weave a tapestry of talents\, traditions\, and tales representing a community of communities. \nAs part of Wyman’s residency\, the Red Poppy Art House has graciously provided their space for The Poppies\, Pop-Up Shop\, in-kind. He composes and performs with major symphony orchestras\, chamber orchestras\, new music ensembles\, string quartets\, cello quartets\, big bands\, jazz combos\, rock bands\, world music ensembles\, theater companies\, radio productions\, ballet companies\, modern dance companies\, and circus troupes. \nPraised by the New York Times for his “outrageous fiddling\,” violinist Matthew Szemela crosses genres with ease.
