For her first solo exhibition at the Red Poppy Art House\, Mimi Herrera-Pease picks up the tempo with spring and summer shades on canvas. Come by and feel the harmony between the sonic and visual arts!\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nMimi Herrera-Pease is a San Francisco-based painter who was born in Mexico City. Under the tutelage of the late Carlos Villa\, a Guggenheim Fellow\, Herrera-Pease learned technique and self-expression through oil painting at the San Francisco Art Institute. The immediacy of action painting and abstract expressionism became her vocation. Influenced by the New York School of Abstract Expressionism\, Bay Area Figurative\, and Neo-Expressionist movements\, she honed her skills as an abstract painter.\n \nABOUT THE CURATORS:\nElena Mencarelli moved to San Francisco after concluding her Master Degree in Visual Arts at the University of Bologna\, Italy. Previously\, she was the artistic director of the Make Your Mark Art Gallery in Melbourne\, Australia. In addition to her artistic practice and curatorial background\, she is also engaged in art criticism. Elena is the co-writer of the catalogue of the double exhibition Maria Rebecca Ballestra – Alan Sonfist\, a better landscape (Unimedia Modern Contemporary Art\, Genova\, Italy) and is the author of Maria Rebecca Ballestra\, a phenomenology of posthumanism\, soon to be published in both Italian and English. \nZena Carlota is a multi-instrumentalist\, singer\, and visual artist based in the Bay Area. Her traditional background in kora and West African harp has inspired her to combine her love of classical West African string music with Appalachian folk\, Delta blues\, and soul to create narratives of memory and migration in the African Diaspora. An accomplished visual artist\, Zena finds it a natural progression to apply in her own art the same themes of ritual and tradition found in West African music. Using guitars\, Afro-Latin percussion\, and beautiful vocal arrangements\, they transport audiences to other countries\, realms\, and eras – always with an element of originality – while honoring profound musical traditions and innovators. Mambo\, bolero\, son\, joropo\, and guaracha are some of the rhythms they use\, igniting dancers and daring concert audiences to stay still in their seats. \nFeaturing:\nJose Roberto Hernandez – vocals\, guitar\nManuel Constancio – vocals\, guitar\nJohn Santos – percussion \nJose Roberto Hernandez is a highly respected multi-instrumentalist\, singer\, composer\, arranger\, producer\, musical educator\, and ethnomusicologist. He was born in the city of Cardenas\, Tabasco\, Mexico\, surrounded by master folklorists. He is a unique artist whose devotion\, creativity\, and studies in the genres of traditional music from Mexico\, Venezuela\, Colombia\, Bolivia\, Peru\, Cuba\, Puerto Rico\, Brazil\, and Argentina have earned him great recognition and fan appreciation. \nLearn more: Website \nBay Area native Manuel Constancio Jr. is an accomplished and versatile guitarist/vocalist whose 25-year association with the Navy Band found him directing the NATO Band in Naples\, Italy; on Treasure Island\, in San Francisco; and in San Diego\, California. He was the Navy’s first “minority” band director. He co-directs the band Sabrosito with his brother José. \nJohn Santos\, a multi-Grammy nominee and San Francisco Latino Heritage Arts Awardee\, is one of the foremost bandleaders\, composers\, producers\, percussionists\, and educators in Afro-Latin music. He has worked with acknowledged masters\, including Tito Puente\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Max Roach\, Cachao\, Eddie Palmieri\, and Omar Sosa. Molly’s music\, often intertwined with the elements of North Indian raga\, experimental vocals\, or playful free-form improvisation\, also reveals the rhythmic and note-bending influences inherited from the music of the African diaspora. \nFeaturing:\nFrank Martin – piano/arrangements\nJeff Chambers – bass\nDeszon Claiborne – drums \nMolly Holm is an unconventional singer/composer who blends jazz\, improvisation\, and North Indian raga\, reflecting her studies with master vocalist Pandit Pran Nath. Singing with Bobby McFerrin’s original Voicestra\, Molly has also performed with composer Terry Riley\, tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain\, choreographer June Watanabe\, and George Coates Performance Works. Other projects include collaborations with African-American roots-music vocalist Linda Tillery and Indo-fusion saxophonist George Brooks. DESCRIPTION:Saxophonist Tom Griesser and his longtime collaborators\, bassist Ollie Dudek and drummer Dan Foltz\, present selections performed during their three-year stint at the Burritt Room in San Francisco\, as well as new compositions to honor visionaries and rebels in a variety of endeavors. The trio draws from a wide range of influences\, including 1930s Benny Goodman\, 1940s Ellingtonia\, the Sonny Rollins Trio recordings of the 1950s\, hard bop classics\, and avant-garde figures such as Odean Pope and Roswell Rudd. \nFeaturing:\nTom Griesser – tenor saxophone\nOllie Dudek – bass\nDan Foltz – drums \nSaxophonist Tom Griesser has been performing on the San Francisco scene for 25 years\, starting with the swing revival of the 1990s and branching out with a straight-ahead jazz quintet\, the Section 8 Project. Since then\, he has been a longtime member of both the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra and Brass Monkey Brass Band\, recording several albums with both ensembles. They will perform original music\, including new songs from Ali’s recent album Light Comes In\, as well as selections from different folk music traditions with guitar\, accordion\, cello\, fiddle\, vocal harmony\, and harmonium. \nFeaturing:\nAli Dineen – vocals\, guitar\, accordion\, harmonium\nHannah Sassoon – vocals\, cello\, fiddle \nAli Dineen is a singer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and visual artist based in Brooklyn. She performs original\, acoustic folk music\, as well as songs from U.S. folk traditions\, and she incorporates historical and sociopolitical commentary into her work. Her music\, deeply personal and also political\, explores the intersections of personal stories with larger histories. In her work\, Ali navigates the forces that divide human beings and cause conflict\, and she seeks to dismantle them through honest lyricism and intimate acoustic music. She has worked with Bread and Puppet Theater as puppeteer and musician\, and performs regularly in NYC. \nHannah Sassoon is a visual artist\, multi-instrumentalist\, and environmentalist resistor living in Nashville\, TN.
