Specializing in the classical and jazz traditions\, he has performed with Brad Mehldau; Joshua Redman; the California\, Santa Cruz\, and Modesto Symphonies; is a member of the One Found Sound chamber orchestra; and has performed chamber music with the Musical Art Quintet\, Amaranth Quartet\, and the Real Vocal String Quartet. Karr has also spent years performing with several Balkan\, Turkish\, and klezmer folk groups and recorded with the Tumbleweed Wanderers. As an arts administrator\, he served for a year as the Director of Performance Programming at the Red Poppy Art House. He currently directs the Diablo Jazz Company in public and private events.\n \nAaron Kierbel has proudly been a part of the MAPP for the past 15 years\, touring internationally with Rupa and the April Fishes\, as well as locally with Jazz Mafia\, San Francisco Mime Troupe\, and many others.\n \nColm O’Riain\, hailed as a “genius fiddler” by Mike Scott of The Waterboys\, is an Irish-born violinist\, composer\, and an accomplished improviser in multiple genres. In the USA\, where he currently calls home\, he has enthralled audiences on stages as diverse as CBGB’s in New York\, to Fillmore West and Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. He has performed at festivals and venues throughout the world\, from Alaska to Argentina and Sweden to Vietnam. While deeply rooted in the traditions of his native Ireland\, O’Riain’s music constantly looks for connection with other forms. The Irish Herald notes that “O’Riain’s fireworks display of virtuosity easily spans the diverse genres of gypsy\, tango\, jazz\, blues and Irish music\, all with his characteristic intelligence and pizazz.”\n \nKristi Williamson is a multimedia performer born and raised in Maine and now residing in the Bay Area. Her performance work approaches art and healing through movement\, ritual theater\, myth\, and archetype. She currently dances with Anna Halprin’s performance lab and has extensively created\, directed\, and performed original dance theater works on the East Coast. Williamson teaches kundalini yoga throughout the country and is dedicated to bridging performance and the healing arts.\n \nAdrian Arias is a Peruvian international award-winning visual-poet who has been enlivening the local art scene for the last 18 years. His art often includes visual and performance aspects of an accessible lyrical\, emotional\, surreal\, and whimsical nature. Arias is also an acclaimed visual and installation artist\, as well as a cultural promoter.\n \nPrasant Radhakrishnan is a versatile saxophonist steeped in both South Indian classical (Carnatic) and jazz disciplines. The distinct vocal texture of his sound on saxophone\, noted for its expressive complexity and rhythmic ingenuity\, reflects his’s continued study of tradition\, constant innovation\, and vast concert experience over the past 15 years. The foremost disciple of Carnatic saxophone pioneer “Padmashri” Dr. Kadri Gopalnath\, Radhakrishnan began developing his music over the course of nearly a decade of intensive musical training under his guru\, much of which took place in the traditional gurukulam format of complete immersion. The rigor of this training\, followed by the privilege of accompanying his teacher on stage in hundreds of concerts in subsequent years\, fostered a deep understanding of Carnatic music.\n \nMichael Warr is the poetry editor for Of Poetry and Protest: From Emmett Till to Trayvon Martin (W.W. Norton & Company\, 2016). He received a Creative Work Fund Award for his multimedia project Tracing Poetic Memory in Bayview Hunters Point. His poems are being translated into Mandarin by poet Chun Yu in their collaboration Two Languages / One Community. In 2017\, Warr was named a San Francisco Library Laureate. Other awards include a PEN Oakland Josephine Miles Award for Excellence in Literature\, Black Caucus of the American Library Association Award\, Gwendolyn Brooks Significant Illinois Poets Award\, a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship\, and more. Often working with musicians\, visual and performing artists\, Warr’s poems have been dramatized for theater\, depicted on canvas\, and set to original musical composition. For more\, visit here.\n \nTodd Thomas Brown is a multidisciplinary artist and cultural connector immersed equally in his artistic practice as with his organizational work in developing hybrid models of merging small-scale arts-presenting with social networking and community building. He is the founder of San Francisco’s Red Poppy Art House and the Mission Arts & Performance Project (MAPP). With a painting practice in mixed-media\, Brown has participated in artist residencies with the de Young Museum in San Francisco and Residencia el Otro Lado in Chiapas\, Mexico\, and was one of three artists selected to initiate the de Young Museum’s year-long Artist Fellowship Program in 2011\, funded by the James Irvine Foundation. As a performing artist\, he has been awarded grants in disciplines of music and theater from the San Francisco Foundation\, Zellerbach Family Foundation\, and the San Francisco Arts Commission. Brown was recently named to the YBCA 100\, an annual compilation of the creative minds\, makers\, and pioneers that are asking the questions and making the provocations that are propelling new culture-making across the nation. He is presently Project Director and Music Curator for Flying Under the Radar Biennial Festival of the Arts\, an interdisciplinary lab/festival that facilitates collaborative work between artists of the San Francisco Bay Area and Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil. He has presented work all over the San Francisco Bay Area\, including at the New Frequencies Festival at YBCA and with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players Ensemble. He studied with Myra Melford at UC Berkeley and is currently working on an MFA in music performance and composition at the California Institute of the Arts. \nGirl Swallows Nightingale hatched in 2016 when Marica Petrey accidentally wrote too much music for a fantasy film she was making and decided that it was the perfect excuse to start a new band. With songwriting inspired by folklore\, anime\, science fiction\, and epic saga\, Girl Swallows Nightingale conjures a cinematic experience\, painting a vivid musical canvas that shifts its colors between modern rock\, jazz\, theater\, funk\, and pop\, to underwater soundscapes and dreams of outer space. DESCRIPTION:The Red Poppy Art House invites you to join the artist and curator behind its next exhibition\, ¡Aquí no hay moscas! (‘There Are No Flies here!’)\, on view until May 14th. In this installation\, artist Santiago Insignares uses the metaphor of an incessant swarm of flies by making a direct\, visual translation of his frustration with the current technology-driven age. The buzz of the flies and the buzz of a smartphone are brought together by a nostalgic memory\, inviting the audience to question the relevance of the symbiotic relationship they have with their phones and what measures should be taken to make this relationship healthier and sustainable.\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nSantiago Insignares (b. 1986\, Troy\, New York) is a Colombian artist based in San Francisco\, California. He received an MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2015 and a BFA in Illustration and Animation from the European Institute of Design of Rome in 2009. His work has been shown throughout Bogotá at Casa Cuadrada\, The Bogotá Art Fair Emerging Artists Pavilion\, La Residencia Gallery\, as well as in San Francisco at Noroof Gallery\, Adobe Books Backroom\, The Growlery\, and the California Academy of Sciences. His work addresses our relationship with memory\, considering themes like trauma\, nostalgia\, social memory\, and their importance in identity creation.\n \nABOUT THE CURATOR:\nElena Mencarelli moved to San Francisco after concluding her master’s degree in visual arts at the University of Bologna\, Italy. Previously\, she was the artistic director of the Make Your Mark Art Gallery in Melbourne\, Australia. In addition to her artistic practice and curatorial background\, she is also engaged in art criticism. Giles has an MFA in performance/choreography from Mills College\, and from 2005-2015\, she was a performing/teaching artist with AXIS Dance Company. Giles has received an Isadora Duncan Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Performance – Ensemble and a Homer Avila Award for Excellence in Integrated Dance. \nMegan Lowe is a performance artist\, dancer\, singer\, teacher\, and administrator. She has performed with Flyaway Productions\, Lizz Roman & Dancers\, Scott Wells & Dancers\, Nancy Karp + Dancers\, Epiphany Productions\, Dance Brigade\, and more. Lowe continues to create her own dances\, as well as collaborative works with Sonsherée Giles. Conde has been in the U.S. for the last ten years and began his tenure here after winning a scholarship to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. While pursuing this degree in jazz performance at Berklee\, he received the Jazz Revelation Award. DESCRIPTION:A staple in the Bay Area Balkan and gypsy swing scenes in recent years\, Alex Hand’s current project explores the common ground of influence between western art music and jazz with folk music of Eastern Europe. The repertoire features uptempo and high-energy dance tunes from Bulgaria and Romania with a progressive edge. \nSharing the night is post-folk/rock band Three For Silver\, who is currently on tour supporting the newest album\, The Way We Burn\, released September 2017 on Foggy Night Records. The album was recorded outside of traditional studios in an attempt to capture the music out in the wild\, in the nooks and crannies where it’s most likely to breed and grow. He is also a co-founder and an artistic director of the non-profit collective Brooklyn Raga Massive. Today he lives in Brooklyn\, NYC\, and is actively involved in performing\, curating\, producing\, and teaching through various institutions including Brooklyn Raga Massive\, Carnegie Hall’s Global Encounters\, and Ragas Live Festival. Gupta continues to build his career by combining traditional and modern improvisational styles\, drawing from his dual Indian and American heritage.
