DESCRIPTION:The Red Poppy Art House invites you to join the artist and curator behind its next exhibition\, ¡Aquí no hay moscas! (‘There Are No Flies here!’)\, on view until May 14th. In this installation\, artist Santiago Insignares uses the metaphor of an incessant swarm of flies by making a direct\, visual translation of his frustration with the current technology-driven age. The buzz of the flies and the buzz of a smartphone are brought together by a nostalgic memory\, inviting the audience to question the relevance of the symbiotic relationship they have with their phones and what measures should be taken to make this relationship healthier and sustainable.\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nSantiago Insignares (b. 1986\, Troy\, New York) is a Colombian artist based in San Francisco\, California. He received an MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute in 2015 and a BFA in Illustration and Animation from the European Institute of Design of Rome in 2009. His work has been shown throughout Bogotá at Casa Cuadrada\, The Bogotá Art Fair Emerging Artists Pavilion\, La Residencia Gallery\, as well as in San Francisco at Noroof Gallery\, Adobe Books Backroom\, The Growlery\, and the California Academy of Sciences. His work addresses our relationship with memory\, considering themes like trauma\, nostalgia\, social memory\, and their importance in identity creation.\n \nABOUT THE CURATOR:\nElena Mencarelli moved to San Francisco after concluding her master’s degree in visual arts at the University of Bologna\, Italy. Previously\, she was the artistic director of the Make Your Mark Art Gallery in Melbourne\, Australia. In addition to her artistic practice and curatorial background\, she is also engaged in art criticism. First collaborating while students at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music\, Jon and Melinda founded Renegade Duo in 2017 with the intention of paying tribute to music they find interesting and exciting. Utilizing both historical and modern instruments\, they perform an uncommon repertoire for guitar and voice. Nimbly navigating different eras and genres\, they take care to investigate and highlight stylistic differences in each using the full range and capability of their instruments\, including 19th century guitar\, lute\, tenor banjo\, and modern classical guitar. She recently performed as the alto soloist in Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9” with Classical Revolution Orchestra and frequently collaborates with many Bay Area ensembles and musicians\, most recently the Musical Art Quintet\, Phonochrome\, Oakland-based jazz band RDL+\, and Iranian singer Mahsa Vahdat. Active with several chamber groups\, Melinda is a member of Renegade Duo with guitarist Jon Mendle and Liaison Ensemble\, a female Baroque quartet bringing historically informed performances to a wide range of audiences in non-traditional venues. \nClassical guitarist Jon Mendle has performed around the country since his Carnegie Hall debut at age 19 and has drawn widespread praise for his virtuosity and musicianship. His highlights include solo recitals at the 2015 Loyola Marymount University Annual Guitar Festival\, the 2014 Guitar Foundation of America Annual Convention\, and for presenters such as San Francisco Performances and guitar societies up and down the west coast. Their music is an original blend of styles drawing from concert and folk traditions. It begins with the electric lever harp of Amelia Romano\, whose playing is rhythmic and dynamic. DESCRIPTION:Through a mini artistic residency with the Red Poppy Art House\, artists WaterSaw\, Sonsherée Giles\, and Megan Lowe present The Sounds Inside\, a site-specific dance and sound score exploring what is going on within a space\, our bodies\, and our minds. Creating layers of sound through loopers\, WaterSaw uses their instruments in both conventional and experiential ways\, giving way to an array of textures and sounds ranging from sparse\, to rhythmic\, to ethereal\, to driving. The strong relationship between Giles and Lowe is supported by full trust in each other\, both physically and artistically\, which allows for new discoveries through proficient movement generation\, risk-taking\, tackling unusual physical situations\, and coming up with compelling solutions. They are inspired to write music for modern dance choreography\, film scores\, or in conjunction with other art forms. Creating layers of sound through loopers\, their music utilizes a modern minimalism approach. The rumination of textures\, rhythms\, or root chords creates a simple foundation from which to build melodic and rhythmic transformations. WaterSaw strives to incite feelings and memories so that the audience becomes an extension of the music. The group has received an Isadora Duncan Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music/Sound/Text. \nSonsherée Giles is a dancer\, choreographer\, teacher\, costume designer\, and founder of the collaborative art project This Sweet Nothing. She enjoys making dances based on the observation of animals\, landscapes\, art history\, and daily life experiences. Giles has an MFA in performance/choreography from Mills College\, and from 2005-2015\, she was a performing/teaching artist with AXIS Dance Company. She has taught contemporary dance in public school systems\, institutions\, dance festivals\, and universities. Giles has received an Isadora Duncan Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Performance – Ensemble and a Homer Avila Award for Excellence in Integrated Dance. \nMegan Lowe is a performance artist\, dancer\, singer\, teacher\, and administrator. She has performed with Flyaway Productions\, Lizz Roman & Dancers\, Scott Wells & Dancers\, Nancy Karp + Dancers\, Epiphany Productions\, Dance Brigade\, and more. Lowe continues to create her own dances\, as well as collaborative works with Sonsherée Giles. She teaches for Bandaloop\, Flyaway\, Joe Goode Performance Group\, for contact improvisation gatherings\, and for her alma mater Theater\, Dance\, and Performance Studies (TDPS) at UC Berkeley. \nUnwoman\, also known as Erica Mulkey\, is a San Francisco-based solo cellist and singer-songwriter. Her sets feature stand-up electric cello with live looping. In 2015\, she received two Steampunk Chronicle Reader’s Choice Awards for best solo musician and best album. Unwoman has performed with Amanda Palmer\, Voltaire\, Abney Park\, Rasputina\, Stripmall Architecture\, and Vernian Process\, among many others. The repertoire features uptempo and high-energy dance tunes from Bulgaria and Romania with a progressive edge. \nSharing the night is post-folk/rock band Three For Silver\, who is currently on tour supporting the newest album\, The Way We Burn\, released September 2017 on Foggy Night Records. The album was recorded outside of traditional studios in an attempt to capture the music out in the wild\, in the nooks and crannies where it’s most likely to breed and grow. As a young woman\, Bringi was influenced by M.I.A. and Dead Can Dance\, studied with Cecil Taylor and Meredith Monk\, while at the same time deepened her studies with Indian classical masters like Pandit G.S. Sachdev and Ustaad Aashish Khan. She has released two albums as a solo artist and recorded on over 20 sacred music records\, including the 2016 Grammy-nominated Bhakti Without Borders. Since then\, she chose painting as her favorite form of art to express her artistic vision. Samaneh’s work has been exhibited in Iran\, Dubai\, and Malaysia\, and continues to be exhibited both in the United States and abroad. She is known for her watercolor and acrylic miniature paintings\, inspired by ancient Persian art and combined with contemporary techniques. \nRyan Andersen is a San Francisco-based composer and singer-songwriter creating music that weaves together topics of personal healing\, social justice\, spiritual purpose\, environmental awareness\, and the challenges\, joys\, and responsibilities of being alive at this unique moment in humanity. \nBand Together is the musical arm of the Creative Liberation Network. It is a group of musicians\, artists\, performers\, poets\, dancers\, activists\, and community facilitators who provide educational and performative experiences through collaboration. They are building a seven-album\, 108-song musical catalog as part of a larger book and tarot deck project. The seven albums will be presented as a single catalog\, with each song embodying a different card and each album representing the seven directions\, the four elements\, the Major Arcana\, the 13 Fools\, and the 13 Multiverse in The Fools Tarot. \nWaterSaw is a group of musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area. Their music is composed specifically for modern dance choreography\, film scores\, or in conjunction with another art form. Creating layers of sound through loopers\, their live music varies in range and can be sparse\, rhythmic\, ethereal\, or driving. The collaboration of music and art facilitates the intended artistic expression. WaterSaw uses their instruments in both conventional and experiential forms\, giving way to an array of textures and sounds. \nMegan Lowe is a performance artist\, dancer\, singer\, teacher\, and administrator. She has performed with Flyaway Productions\, Lizz Roman & Dancers\, Scott Wells & Dancers\, Nancy Karp + Dancers\, Epiphany Productions\, Dance Brigade\, and more. Megan continues to create her own dances\, as well as collaborative works with Sonsherée Giles. She teaches for Bandaloop\, Flyaway\, Joe Goode Performance Group\, for contact improvisation gatherings\, and for her alma mater UC Berkeley’s Theater\, Dance & Performance Studies (TDPS). \nShira Yaziv enjoys encouraging people to move in new ways while learning skills and being creative. Her background is in capoeira\, circus arts\, and dance. DESCRIPTION:Prominent jazz guitarist Howard Alden joins veteran violinist Kit Eakle and his project DjangoSphere for an evening of standards\, originals\, and the music of Thelonious Sphere Monk and Django Reinhardt. In the words of Bay Area jazz reviewer Andrew Gilbert\, “DjangoSphere is a rhythmically dexterous rollercoaster ride that artfully melds the sounds of two irreducibly brilliant artists.” \n \nFEATURING:\nHoward Alden – guitar\nKit Eakle – violin\nRory Judge – drums\nDon Bennett – bass\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nA California native\, Howard Alden began playing at age ten\, inspired by recordings of Armstrong\, Basie\, and Goodman\, as well as those by guitarists Barney Kessel\, Charlie Christian\, Django Reinhardt\, and George Van Eps. Soon Alden was working professionally around Los Angeles\, playing in groups ranging from traditional to mainstream to modern jazz. He has won accolades from critics and musicians alike\, including Benny Carter\, Flip Phillips\, Mel Powell\, Bud Freeman\, Kenny Davern\, Clark Terry\, Dizzy Gillespie\, and George Van Eps\, as well as notable contemporaries such as Scott Hamilton and Ken Peplowski. A Concord Jazz recording artist since the late ’80s\, Alden has proved himself to be an artist of astonishing virtuosity and originality on the many records he has released. \nThe leader of DjangoSphere\, Kit Eakle is known as one of the most original improvising violinists on the west coast. He has been a member of the Hot Club of Marin\, the Sons of Emperor Norton\, FiddleJazz\, and the Eakle Brothers\, and has shared a stage with Dan Hicks\, Martín Fierro\, Joe Craven\, Mads Tolling\, David LaFlame\, and Paul Mehling. In addition to being a performer\, Eakle has developed a high profile in the San Francisco Bay Area\, where he established a concert series\, Point Richmond Jazz\, featuring many of the finest jazz violinists in the world.
