DESCRIPTION:Through a mini artistic residency with the Red Poppy Art House\, artists WaterSaw\, Sonsherée Giles\, and Megan Lowe present The Sounds Inside\, a site-specific dance and sound score exploring what is going on within a space\, our bodies\, and our minds. Creating layers of sound through loopers\, WaterSaw uses their instruments in both conventional and experiential ways\, giving way to an array of textures and sounds ranging from sparse\, to rhythmic\, to ethereal\, to driving. The strong relationship between Giles and Lowe is supported by full trust in each other\, both physically and artistically\, which allows for new discoveries through proficient movement generation\, risk-taking\, tackling unusual physical situations\, and coming up with compelling solutions. They are inspired to write music for modern dance choreography\, film scores\, or in conjunction with other art forms. Creating layers of sound through loopers\, their music utilizes a modern minimalism approach. The rumination of textures\, rhythms\, or root chords creates a simple foundation from which to build melodic and rhythmic transformations. WaterSaw strives to incite feelings and memories so that the audience becomes an extension of the music. The group has received an Isadora Duncan Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music/Sound/Text. \nSonsherée Giles is a dancer\, choreographer\, teacher\, costume designer\, and founder of the collaborative art project This Sweet Nothing. She enjoys making dances based on the observation of animals\, landscapes\, art history\, and daily life experiences. Giles has an MFA in performance/choreography from Mills College\, and from 2005-2015\, she was a performing/teaching artist with AXIS Dance Company. She has taught contemporary dance in public school systems\, institutions\, dance festivals\, and universities. Giles has received an Isadora Duncan Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Performance – Ensemble and a Homer Avila Award for Excellence in Integrated Dance. \nMegan Lowe is a performance artist\, dancer\, singer\, teacher\, and administrator. She has performed with Flyaway Productions\, Lizz Roman & Dancers\, Scott Wells & Dancers\, Nancy Karp + Dancers\, Epiphany Productions\, Dance Brigade\, and more. Lowe continues to create her own dances\, as well as collaborative works with Sonsherée Giles. She teaches for Bandaloop\, Flyaway\, Joe Goode Performance Group\, for contact improvisation gatherings\, and for her alma mater Theater\, Dance\, and Performance Studies (TDPS) at UC Berkeley. \nUnwoman\, also known as Erica Mulkey\, is a San Francisco-based solo cellist and singer-songwriter. Her sets feature stand-up electric cello with live looping. In 2015\, she received two Steampunk Chronicle Reader’s Choice Awards for best solo musician and best album. Unwoman has performed with Amanda Palmer\, Voltaire\, Abney Park\, Rasputina\, Stripmall Architecture\, and Vernian Process\, among many others. Qais’ mastery of the Afghan rabab and diverse inspirations are on full display in his recordings\, including two LPs\,—one of which\, The Green Language\, was an Amazon bestseller in India and Pakistan— four EPs\, and one live album. He tours extensively\, having played in eight countries on four continents in the last three years. His original compositions can also be heard in the film The Bread Winner\, produced by Angelina Jolie. He is a graduate in classical music from the Jose Iturbi Conservatory of Music and in jazz piano from el Liceu de Barcelona. Conde has been in the U.S. for the last ten years and began his tenure here after winning a scholarship to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. While pursuing this degree in jazz performance at Berklee\, he received the Jazz Revelation Award. WaterSaw band members\, Megan Lowe\, Shira Yaziv\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nSamaneh Salehi began her career in Iran after studying graphic design at Tehran Noor Conservatory. Since then\, she chose painting as her favorite form of art to express her artistic vision. Samaneh’s work has been exhibited in Iran\, Dubai\, and Malaysia\, and continues to be exhibited both in the United States and abroad. She is known for her watercolor and acrylic miniature paintings\, inspired by ancient Persian art and combined with contemporary techniques. \nRyan Andersen is a San Francisco-based composer and singer-songwriter creating music that weaves together topics of personal healing\, social justice\, spiritual purpose\, environmental awareness\, and the challenges\, joys\, and responsibilities of being alive at this unique moment in humanity. \nBand Together is the musical arm of the Creative Liberation Network. It is a group of musicians\, artists\, performers\, poets\, dancers\, activists\, and community facilitators who provide educational and performative experiences through collaboration. They are building a seven-album\, 108-song musical catalog as part of a larger book and tarot deck project. The seven albums will be presented as a single catalog\, with each song embodying a different card and each album representing the seven directions\, the four elements\, the Major Arcana\, the 13 Fools\, and the 13 Multiverse in The Fools Tarot. \nWaterSaw is a group of musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area. Their music is composed specifically for modern dance choreography\, film scores\, or in conjunction with another art form. Creating layers of sound through loopers\, their live music varies in range and can be sparse\, rhythmic\, ethereal\, or driving. The collaboration of music and art facilitates the intended artistic expression. WaterSaw uses their instruments in both conventional and experiential forms\, giving way to an array of textures and sounds. \nMegan Lowe is a performance artist\, dancer\, singer\, teacher\, and administrator. She has performed with Flyaway Productions\, Lizz Roman & Dancers\, Scott Wells & Dancers\, Nancy Karp + Dancers\, Epiphany Productions\, Dance Brigade\, and more. Megan continues to create her own dances\, as well as collaborative works with Sonsherée Giles. She teaches for Bandaloop\, Flyaway\, Joe Goode Performance Group\, for contact improvisation gatherings\, and for her alma mater UC Berkeley’s Theater\, Dance & Performance Studies (TDPS). \nShira Yaziv enjoys encouraging people to move in new ways while learning skills and being creative. Soon Alden was working professionally around Los Angeles\, playing in groups ranging from traditional to mainstream to modern jazz. Each Thursday\, Alternative Conservatory is a time to unwind\, connect\, absorb\, consider\, listen\, and discuss with FRESH artists notorious for disarming paradigms and thinking outside the box. For the January 25th Exchange\, Sarah Bouars and Kristianne Salcines present their workshop\, Empathix: Bending Binaries\, Bodies and Building Bridges. \nBy queer POCs for queer POCs\, Empathix is designed to create an atmosphere for serious physical research in togetherness. We will be doing everything together for each other. This workshop will consist of a series of interactive movement practices/play followed by a facilitated discussion around participants’ experiences to build trust and intimacy\, which we hope will allow us to work towards a community. Everyday\, we will begin with breathing together\, practicing yoga\, qigong\, taiji\, and meditation practice\, then leading to physical exercises and practices that focus on play\, love\, visibility\, coexistence\, trust\, empathy\, and serious\, sweaty\, beautifully-ugly inducing moving. Come join us to sweat and heal together. \nSarah Bouars and Kristianne Salcines are both queer people of color\, intersectional feminists\, and are at home in the field of dance/performance-art/choreography. In this workshop\, we want to develop further our concept of “care and share\,” which we created in September 2016 during Queeries into collective feminism at Ponderosa in Stolzenhagen\, Germany. “Care and share” strives to use performance as a tool for community building\, as well as for healing and developing an empathic eye and deconstructing the perceptions of subject and object. It allows us to open up to a much broader idea of what performance\, performer\, and audience might entail or mean. The album seeks to construct a new edifice on the ancient and fertile ground of mystery\, spirit\, and ingenuity shared by artistic traditions the world over. Aaron is a founding member of brass trio Lip Service and larger brass band Sisu BrassLand\, for which he is the bandleader\, composer\, arranger\, and trumpet player. SUMMARY:FRESH Exchanges: Alternative Conservatory ft. Dance Studies Working Group
DESCRIPTION:FRESH 2018 Exchanges offer nine interactive\, inclusive\, and insightful gatherings in the frameworks of RIPE [raw + intimate performance experiments]\, POTLUCK/Social Practice\, and Alternative Conservatory at the Red Poppy Art House between January 9th and 25th. Each Thursday\, Alternative Conservatory is a time to unwind\, connect\, absorb\, consider\, listen\, and discuss with FRESH artists notorious for disarming paradigms and thinking outside the box. For the January 18th Exchange\, Dance Studies Working Group presents a panel discussion\, Creating from/in times of crisis. \nFrom environmental disasters to sexual trauma to political upheaval\, this past year has encompassed all of this and more. In this discussion\, we ask how does one create from the tumult or ruins of environmental\, political\, and personal turmoil? What resources are needed? How do we work together to build networks of support and accountability both on and offstage\, inside and outside the studio? How do we\, as individuals invested in the creative potential and resiliency of the body\, look forward collectively to imagine and actively create a better\, more equitable future?\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nThe UC Berkeley Dance Studies Working Group (DSWG) was founded in 2008 by a group of graduate students in the Theater\, Dance\, and Performance Studies Department (TDPS) at UC Berkeley. As dance scholars worked to build spaces for dance research and practice in the field of performance studies\, graduate students focused on dance within TDPS felt equally compelled to find avenues for developing research and honing practices\, thus the birth of DSWG. To this day DSWG exists as a site of inquiry\, exploration\, and discussion for students\, faculty\, scholars\, practitioners\, and community members engaged with dance and movement-based practices. With a focus on process over product\, DSWG serves as an incubator to engage with new research and alternate pathways for knowledge production and dissemination\, and further support dance practices and research that engage with a wide array of social\, political\, and cultural issues. DSWG has been and continues to be generously supported by the Townsend Center for the Humanities.\n \nABOUT FRESH FESTIVAL 2018:\nFRESH Festival 2018 is San Francisco’s 9th annual festival of experimental dance\, music\, and performance from January 5-27\, 2018. The festival offers four weekends of risk-taking main-stage Performances\, three weeks + weekends of immersive studio Practices\, and 14 social and interactive Exchanges\, hosted by Joe Goode Annex\, Red Poppy Art House and F8 Nightclub in San Francisco\, and Finnish Hall in Berkeley.
