Each Tuesday\, RIPE [raw + intimate performance experiments] invites two artists who are working on the edge of their form to share excerpts of current projects\, speak about their process\, and hold a moderated group discussion. Facilitated by Kathleen Hermesdorf\, the January 23rd Exchange features artists Sarah Bouars and Kristianne Salcines.\n \nMaybe​ ​in​ ​the​ ​morning​ ​I​ ​say​ ​goodnight​ ​to​ ​you by Sarah Bouars and Kristianne Salcines\nWe have developed a practice and a ritual that helps sustain our existence under our systemic pressures from Berlin to LA. In this work\, we will experience a way of existing that will offer you alternative ways of finding “the antidote” or “the answers” to the systemic struggles we find ourselves into. This work is filled with intelligence in self-love\, fiercely unapologetic existence\, and clever coping mechanisms. How do we celebrate what is here with us now? How do continue to feel when all we want to do is escape and be distant? How do we feed ourselves and each other of love that is there all along. This work will nourish you\, literally. SUMMARY:Sisu Brassland & Mughal Muesli: Music for Brass & Saxophone
DESCRIPTION:First up on the bill\, Sisu BrassLand performs original music for brass composed by bandleader Aaron Priskorn. Crossing many genres while remaining connected to classical voice leading\, the group creates aural paintings and emotive jams through various textures\, grooves\, and melodies.  \nMughal Muesli then presents tunes from their debut album\, Imperial Cereal\, an exploration of an alternate-historical merging of cultures represented by their most imaginative musical exports. The album seeks to construct a new edifice on the ancient and fertile ground of mystery\, spirit\, and ingenuity shared by artistic traditions the world over. The trio draws inspiration from the contrapuntal mastery of the High Baroque in Europe\, the originators and innovators of Khayyal in the Mughal courts of North India\, and the indestructible spirit of American free jazz. \n \nFEATURING:\nSisu Brassland\n5-piece brass band\nTBA – drums \nMughal Muesli\nXavier Del Castillo – tenor sax\nMat Muntz – double bass\nVicente Hansen – drum set \n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nAaron Priskorn has played trumpet for more than two decades exploring many genres of music\, all while staying true to his classically trained roots. He is often sought after as a guest artist and collaborator for various events and productions throughout the Bay Area. Aaron is a founding member of brass trio Lip Service and larger brass band Sisu BrassLand\, for which he is the bandleader\, composer\, arranger\, and trumpet player. He can also be heard at Grace Cathedral and with Classical Revolution\, Green Street Mortuary Band\, and the rock band Melvoy. Holding degrees from Mannes College of Music (BM) and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (MM)\, Aaron also teaches privately in San Francisco. \nLearn more: Bandcamp\n \nWhile grounded in the saxophone trio tradition of Sonny Rollins\, Ornette Coleman\, and Henry Threadgill\, Mughal Muesli is a band that seeks to expand and transcend the associations attached to their configuration. DESCRIPTION:FRESH 2018 Exchanges offer nine interactive\, inclusive\, and insightful gatherings in the frameworks of RIPE [raw + intimate performance experiments]\, POTLUCK/Social Practice\, and Alternative Conservatory at the Red Poppy Art House between January 9th and 25th. Each Thursday\, Alternative Conservatory is a time to unwind\, connect\, absorb\, consider\, listen\, and discuss with FRESH artists notorious for disarming paradigms and thinking outside the box. For the January 18th Exchange\, Dance Studies Working Group presents a panel discussion\, Creating from/in times of crisis. \nFrom environmental disasters to sexual trauma to political upheaval\, this past year has encompassed all of this and more. In this discussion\, we ask how does one create from the tumult or ruins of environmental\, political\, and personal turmoil? What resources are needed? How do we work together to build networks of support and accountability both on and offstage\, inside and outside the studio? How do we\, as individuals invested in the creative potential and resiliency of the body\, look forward collectively to imagine and actively create a better\, more equitable future?\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nThe UC Berkeley Dance Studies Working Group (DSWG) was founded in 2008 by a group of graduate students in the Theater\, Dance\, and Performance Studies Department (TDPS) at UC Berkeley. As dance scholars worked to build spaces for dance research and practice in the field of performance studies\, graduate students focused on dance within TDPS felt equally compelled to find avenues for developing research and honing practices\, thus the birth of DSWG. To this day DSWG exists as a site of inquiry\, exploration\, and discussion for students\, faculty\, scholars\, practitioners\, and community members engaged with dance and movement-based practices. With a focus on process over product\, DSWG serves as an incubator to engage with new research and alternate pathways for knowledge production and dissemination\, and further support dance practices and research that engage with a wide array of social\, political\, and cultural issues. Each Tuesday\, RIPE [raw + intimate performance experiments] invites two artists who are working on the edge of their form to share excerpts of current projects\, speak about their process\, and hold a moderated group discussion. Facilitated by José Navarrete\, the January 16th Exchange features artists Gabriel Christian and Dazaun Soleyn.\n \nBlack Bussy by Gabriel Christian\nAn equestrian movement piece \nDazaun Soleyn\nMy choreographic interest is in creating work that utilizes and magnifies the individual power and beauty of each artist in the room. In order for me to explore this interest\, I foster a relationship-based creative environment that works towards finding the harmony between thought-provoking dialogue and rigorously physical effort.\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nGabriel Christian (t(he)y/(t)him) is a multidisciplinary artist and teacher. After receiving a BA in Theatre Studies from Yale in 2013\, they shifted coasts from their native New York to the Bay Area. Here\, they pivoted from stage performance to reifying queer desire\, gender fluidity (or “juicyness”)\, and black resilience through a broader spectrum of movement arts. They’ve held residencies at Destiny Arts Center\, Finnish Hall\, and This Will Take Time; performed with director Robert Woodruff and choreographers Debby Kajiyama and José Navarrete\, Jess Curtis\, and Anne Bluethenthal; and mounted independent work at CounterPulse\, SOMArts\, and Brava Theater\, amongst others. Ongoing projects include BLACK PRESENCE\, a bricolage exploration of black presence with twenty-nine black and brown artists\, and Lxs Desaparecidxs with choreographer Randy Reyes. Upcoming shows include Revolt She Said. Revolt Again (Crowded Fire) and Queering the Wake (Queer Arts Festival 2018).  \nDazaun Soleyn\, originally from Brooklyn\, New York\, graduated as the University of South Florida’s Outstanding Graduate with a BFA in Modern Dance Performance and Choreography. Upon graduation\, Dazaun was accepted as a trainee at the Alonzo King LINES Ballet School (AKLBS). With AKLBS\, Dazaun has performed works by Sidra Bell\, Kara Davis\, and Maurya Kerr. He has also attended Springboard Danse Montréal where he performed works by Shannon Gillen’s VIM VIGOR Dance Company. His teaching credits include the Alonzo King LINES Ballet Training Program\, University of South Florida\, Gibney Dance Center\, American Ballet School\, Dance Mission Theater\, and ODC Commons. The exhibition is a collection of Salehi’s work during her years of exploring\, experimenting\, and combining contemporary art aesthetics with the spirit of ancient Persian art.\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nSamaneh Salehi began her career in Iran after studying graphic design at Tehran Noor Conservatory. Since then\, she chose painting as her favorite form of art to express her artistic vision. Samaneh’s work has been exhibited in Iran\, Dubai\, and Malaysia\, and continues to be exhibited both in the United States and abroad. She began creating performances with her sister\, Hannah\, and has been deeply influenced by the history of experimental dance and performance in the city. In the summer of 2017\, she completed her bachelor’s degree at the California Institute of Integral Studies\, where she combined her academic work with performance. She also studied energy healing at the Academy of Intuition Medicine®. Energetic\, spiritual\, academic\, and political perspectives continue to shape her dance practice. \nHannah Wasielewski has performed her own creations as a solo artist and in collaborations in the Bay Area\, Arezzo (Italy)\, Ponderosa\, and Earthdance. Her collaborators include Sara Shelton Mann\, Sara Kraft/KraftyWorks\, Helen Walkley\, David Dorfman\, Seán Curran\, Leslie Seiters\, and currently Sam Stone/other dance and Kinetech Arts. DESCRIPTION:The Project explores Arabic\, Turkish\, Armenian\, Eastern European\, Celtic\, Medieval\, and West African music through original compositions and unexpected instrumentation\, including tarhu duets.\n \nFEATURING:\nDaniel Berkman – kora\, percussion\nGary Haggerty – oud\, tarhu\nPeter Maund – percussion\nSarah Michael – kanun\, tarhu\nDiana Rowan – harps\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nDaniel Berkman is a San Francisco-based composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, accompanist\, singer-songwriter\, and electronic musician. He specializes in the gravikord and kora—a 21-stringed West African harp—on which he has produced four acclaimed musical releases: Heartstrings (1996)\, Feverdreams (1998)\, Calabashmoon (2005)\, and Headlands (2015). Daniel has composed many scores for dance since 1998 and has worked with Bay Area companies and choreographers such as Sara Shelton Mann\, Lizz Roman\, Cheryl Chaddick\, Kunst-Stoff\, Dandelion Dance Company\, Heidi Schweiker\, Dexandro Montalvo\, Janice Garrett and Dancers\, ODC/Dance\, Robert Dekkers and Post:Ballet\, Contra Costa Ballet\, Diablo Ballet\, Dance Theatre San Francisco\, and many others. \nGary Haggerty is an accomplished performer and composer who specializes in oud\, saz\, violin\, and a wide range of stringed instruments from Greece and Turkey. Beginning his musical career playing the fiddle and mandolin\, Gary has since performed and trained in the traditional music styles of Ireland\, Scotland\, France\, Turkey\, North Africa\, and the Middle East for over 20 years. For many years\, he toured with the Mevlevi Order of America\, and he continues to participate in Turkish ceremonial gatherings around the country. \nA native of San Francisco\, Peter Maund studied percussion at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and music\, folklore\, and ethnomusicology at the University of California\, Berkeley. He is a founding member of Ensemble Alcatraz and Alasdair Fraser’s Skyedance\, and he has performed with early and contemporary music ensembles including Alboka\, Anonymous 4\, Berkeley Contemporary Chamber Players\, Chanticleer\, Davka\, El Mundo\, The Harp Consort\, Hesperion XX\, Kitka\, Los Cenzontles\, Musica Pacifica\, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra\, and Voices of Music among others. Described by The Herald (Glasgow) as “the most considerate and imaginative of percussionists\,” he can be heard on over 50 recordings. \nSarah Michael received her B.Mus. in Music History from San Francisco State University and M.A. in Composition from Mills College. She has been playing and studying Middle Eastern music for the last 20 years\, primarily with the great composer and accordion virtuoso Elias Lammam. She has performed on the kanun with groups including Aswat\, Flowers of the Nile\, Elias Lammam ensemble\, the Mevlevi Mutrib\, El Azifoon\, and Ya Layl. Prior to that\, Sarah had an energetic career in early music as a viola da gamba player and as a composer. \nBased in the Bay Area\, Diana Rowan is an award-winning musical artist with a performance career that spans over 30 years. She can be heard on many CDs and soundtracks\, including her solo albums Panta Rhei\, The Bright Knowledge\, and the forthcoming As Above\, So Below. Diana holds a PhD in Music Theory (world harp composition techniques)\, plus an MM in Piano Performance (classical). She presents rave-review workshops\, worldwide lectures\, and runs Bright Knowledge Academy\, an online college for dedicated musicians. DESCRIPTION:Bringing together original compositions and creative covers of music from the Great American Songbook and the Beatles\, Berklee College of Music faculty members Jason Anick and Jason Yeager’s “jazz without borders” approach to music-making features adventurous improvisations and a commitment to melody and group interplay. At their first Red Poppy show together\, expect to hear songs from their recently released album\, United\, on Greg Osby’s Inner Circle Music.\n \nFEATURING:\nJason Anick – violin\, mandolin\nJason Yeager – piano\nTBA – bass\nTBA – drums\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nOne of the youngest instructors at Boston’s Berklee College of Music\, award-winning composer Jason Anick is a co-founder and a featured member of the Rhythm Future Quartet\, one of the preeminent neo-gypsy jazz outfits; he also leads his own contemporary jazz ensemble and performs with the Grammy-winning guitarist John Jorgenson. With performances all over the world and renowned venues like the Montreal Jazz Festival\, Blue Note\, Scullers Jazz Club\, Yoshi’s Jazz Club\, and TD Garden\, Jason has proven himself to be a leader in the ever-growing contemporary string world. Anick’s recordings as a leader include Sleepless\, Tipping Point\, and Travels.  \nNow based in New York City\, Jason Yeager (whose own albums include Ruminations and Affirmation) has considerable personal and professional ties to the New England area where he was born and raised. Currently teaching at Boston’s Berklee College of Music\, where he is also one of the college’s youngest faculty members\, Yeager graduated with honors from a double degree program at Tufts University and New England Conservatory. At NEC\, he was mentored by such significant instrumentalists as Danilo Perez\, Fred Hersch\, Ran Blake\, Frank Carlberg\, Jerry Bergonzi\, and John McNeil. He has performed across the U.S. and abroad in Argentina\, Canada\, South Africa\, and Botswana. Among the artists with whom Yeager has performed are Greg Osby\, Rudresh Mahanthappa\, Linda Oh\, Sara Serpa\, Ayn Inserto\, and Ran Blake.
