At their first Red Poppy show together\, expect to hear songs from their recently released album\, United\, on Greg Osby’s Inner Circle Music.\n \nFEATURING:\nJason Anick – violin\, mandolin\nJason Yeager – piano\nTBA – bass\nTBA – drums\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nOne of the youngest instructors at Boston’s Berklee College of Music\, award-winning composer Jason Anick is a co-founder and a featured member of the Rhythm Future Quartet\, one of the preeminent neo-gypsy jazz outfits; he also leads his own contemporary jazz ensemble and performs with the Grammy-winning guitarist John Jorgenson. With performances all over the world and renowned venues like the Montreal Jazz Festival\, Blue Note\, Scullers Jazz Club\, Yoshi’s Jazz Club\, and TD Garden\, Jason has proven himself to be a leader in the ever-growing contemporary string world. Anick’s recordings as a leader include Sleepless\, Tipping Point\, and Travels.  \nNow based in New York City\, Jason Yeager (whose own albums include Ruminations and Affirmation) has considerable personal and professional ties to the New England area where he was born and raised. Currently teaching at Boston’s Berklee College of Music\, where he is also one of the college’s youngest faculty members\, Yeager graduated with honors from a double degree program at Tufts University and New England Conservatory. At NEC\, he was mentored by such significant instrumentalists as Danilo Perez\, Fred Hersch\, Ran Blake\, Frank Carlberg\, Jerry Bergonzi\, and John McNeil. He has performed across the U.S. and abroad in Argentina\, Canada\, South Africa\, and Botswana. Among the artists with whom Yeager has performed are Greg Osby\, Rudresh Mahanthappa\, Linda Oh\, Sara Serpa\, Ayn Inserto\, and Ran Blake. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of Development and Maintenance\, the new solo exhibition by Tana Quincy Arcega at the Red Poppy Art House\, which revolves around the meaning of these pivotal systems within our culture and within contemporary art. The artist turns mass-produced\, functional\, and disposable items (such as spackling compound\, aluminum window screens\, shellac\, and upholstery fabrics) into artistic tools\, giving them new existence through the poetic vision.\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nTana Quincy Arcega has a BFA in painting and sculpture from the University of Nebraska and an MFA in figurative painting from the New York Academy of Art. She has had several solo exhibitions at venues including the Foundry Art Center in Missouri and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art in Nebraska. She has shown locally at CounterPulse\, Root Division\, and Adobe Books Backroom Gallery amongst others. Her story “Overcoming Obstacles” along with her mouth paintings were featured in Her Living magazine in 2013. Tana has worked professionally as a children’s book illustrator\, muralist\, portrait artist\, and educator. He’s appeared on Def Poetry Jam\, been published in numerous anthologies and journals\, and is the vocalist/guitarist for the Mona Passage\, who released their debut EP in 2016. He’s performed at various stages\, including Lincoln Center\, the Brooklyn Museum\, El Museo del Barrio\, Bowery Ballroom\, the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre\, Rotterdam Arts Center\, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe\, BusBoys & Poets\, and  Festival De La Palabra.\n \nBorn in San Francisco\, Tongo Eisen-Martin is a movement worker\, educator\, and poet who has organized against mass incarceration and extrajudicial killing of black people throughout the United States. His curriculum on extrajudicial killing of black people\, We Charge Genocide Again\, has been used as an educational and organizing tool throughout the country. His book of poems Someone’s Dead Already was nominated for a California Book Award. His latest book\,  Heaven Is All Goodbyes\, is the 61st City Lights Pocket Poets book.\n \nPeck The Town Crier has been recording and performing “hist-hop” and “song-rap” since 1994. His music has been featured on MTV UK\, Current TV\, and the Wall Street Journal online. Peck teaches guitar in San Rafael and can often be found crying a capella on the corner of 16th and Mission.\n \nBonnie Wai-Lee Kwong is an artist in many mediums and languages: Cantonese\, English\, Mandarin\, Japanese\, Ruby\, and JavaScript. Her first book of poetry\, ravel\, is a finalist for New Rivers Press’ Many Voices Project and the White Pine Press Poetry Prize. Her work has garnered a number of Pushcart nominations and an artist residency at Stanford University.\n \nJosiah Luis Alderete is a full-blooded Pocho Indio who refries his beans and poems in Spanglish. SUMMARY:Degenerate Art Ensemble: Skeleton Flower (TWO NIGHTS!)
DESCRIPTION:Degenerate Art Ensemble’s Skeleton Flower is an immersive performance that combines rich imagery\, live music and song\, visceral solo dance\, and storytelling ritual. The work will be performed in a rare duo performance by the company’s two co-artistic directors\, dancer Haruko Crow Nishimura and musician/composer Joshua Kohl\, over two nights at the Poppy. \nFeaturing:\nHaruko Crow Nishimura – dance\, voice\nJoshua Kohl – guitar\, electronics \nDegenerate Art Ensemble has shown their work throughout the U.S. and Europe known for their large-scale dance and theater projects\, concerts\, site-transforming spectacles\, and ongoing public experimentation. Recent highlights of the group’s work include a major exhibition at the Frye Art Museum in 2011\, a commission by director Robert Wilson to interpret his opera Einstein on the Beach in 2012\, and a collaboration with the Kronos Quartet in 2013. In 2012\, Degenerate Art Ensemble was commissioned by the city of Seattle to create a massive site-specific work\, titled Underbelly\, in collaboration with Olson Kundig Architects to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Seattle World’s Fair. After the intermission\, writers will explore the ebullient linguistic space of animals\, stories\, and translation.\n \nSCHEDULE:\n6:30 – 7:30pm (Phase 2): The Republic of Sin\n8:00 – 9:00pm (Phase 3): The Escapery\n \nABOUT LIT CRAWL:\nThe 13th annual Lit Crawl will span over three hours in San Francisco’s Mission District\, featuring 99 events and over 400 performers. From fiction to nonfiction and poetry to comedy\, these events will take place in bookstores\, bars\, galleries\, restaurants\, stores\, cafés\, and community spaces. \nOne of the most anticipated literary nights of the year\, San Francisco’s Lit Crawl attracts close to 10\,000 people\, and is the world’s largest such event. In 2008\, Lit Crawl NYC launched in Manhattan\, also an immediate hit. Austin was next\, swarming for the first time in 2011. In 2012\, two more Lit Crawls were born\, one in Brooklyn\, another in Seattle. DESCRIPTION:Fred Frith\, revolutionary of the electric guitar and pioneer of a form of improvisation which refuses all constraints\, stylistic or otherwise\, will present his first Bay Area solo performance in many years. \nFeaturing:\nFred Frith – prepared electric guitar \nFred Frith learned his craft playing in rock bands\, notably Henry Cow\, and creating music in the recording studio. His compositions have been performed by Ensemble Modern\, Arditti Quartet\, Robert Wyatt\, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum\, ROVA Sax Quartet\, and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra\, among many others. He also composes film soundtracks\, including the Oscar-nominated Last Day of Freedom and the much-loved Rivers and Tides\, and he is the subject of the award-winning Step Across the Border. DESCRIPTION:Blending elements from their own musical upbringings with influences from Spain\, Brazil\, Venezuela\, and other Latin American countries\, Los Angeles-based Primary Colors focuses on original compositions and arrangements. At their first Red Poppy show\, expect to hear selections from their upcoming debut album. \nFeaturing:\nLiza Wallace – harp\, vocals\nJosh Johnson – saxophone\nRyan Knudsen – percussion \nJosh Johnson is an alto/soprano saxophonist and composer recognized for his unique sound and captivating approach to improvisation. He has performed with Wayne Shorter\, Herbie Hancock\, Lalah Hathaway\, Robert Hurst\, Esperanza Spalding\, and Aretha Franklin. He is a graduate of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance and has received numerous awards\, including the 2015 ASCAP Young Jazz Composer award for his composition “Remember Forgot” and 1st place in the Civic and Arts Foundation’s Jazz Composition Competition for “Comrade Napoleon.” \nPercussionist Ryan Knudsen can be found playing weekly with legendary blues guitarist Pete Anderson\, traveling and playing with the swinging blues/rock outfit Slim Jenkins\, all over the country with the Los Alamitos High School show choir program\, and hosting his own podcast\, “Ryan is Super Strong!” Ryan has studied with percussion mentors Steve Houghton\, Michael Spiro\, and Kevin Bobo and has lead groups like the Media Noche Trio and recorded with artists such as Sylvia McNair. Ryan currently teaches at Mater Dei Catholic High School\, Los Alamitos High School\, and the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. \nHarpist\, singer\, and composer Liza Wallace brings a new dimension to the harp’s role in contemporary music. Originally from San Francisco\, CA\, she has traveled around the world to study\, teach\, and perform\, most recently touring in Mexico\, Brazil\, and Germany. She has performed and recorded with such artists as Sir Elton John\, the Dear Hunter\, Kristin Chenoweth\, Gonzola Grau\, Pablo Aslan\, and frequently performs with the San Francisco Bay Area’s Awesöme Orchestra Collective. DESCRIPTION:Pianist Myra Melford\, bassist Lisa Mezzacappa\, and saxophonists Angela Morris and Steve Adams perform original compositions and spontaneous improvisations. Ranging from melodic free jazz to energetic sonic explorations\, they bring their unique chemistry to the West Coast for the first time this fall. \nFeaturing:\nMyra Melford – piano\nAngela Morris – tenor saxophone\nLisa Mezzacappa – bass\nSteve Adams – saxophones \nPianist\, composer\, and Guggenheim fellow Myra Melford is a singular voice in piano improvisation. Known for her restless curiosity and diverse collaborations\, Melford draws from such far-ranging interests as jazz\, Chicago blues\, experimental music\, architecture\, and Eastern philosophy. In 2013\, Melford earned a Guggenheim Fellowship for Language of Dreams\, a multisensory work featuring her Snowy Egret quintet. Melford also performs solo concerts; co-leads Trio M (with Mark Dresser and Matt Wilson) and Dialogue (with Ben Goldberg); and plays in trios with Miya Masaoka/Zeena Parkins and Nicole Mitchell/Joelle Leandre. Recent honors include a 2012 Alpert Award in the Arts for Music and a 2013 Doris Duke Performing Artist Award. Melford showcased her prolific artistry in a 12-show\, 25-year career retrospective at the Stone (2015). \nIf Brooklyn’s music circles form a Venn diagram\, saxophonist-composer Angela Morris thrives in the loop between improvised avant-jazz and adventurous pop. Originally from Toronto\, Canada\, and based in NYC\, she has performed throughout North America and Europe. Her recent albums include “Turned\, and Was” (Gold Bolus Recordings) by Morris’ vocal group Rallidae\, “like you always do\, I always did too” by Motel (Prom Night Records)\, and Star Ballad by TMT Trio.
