A native of Argentina\, he is privileged to have studied\, composed\, arranged\, and performed with legendary figures such as Emilio Balcarce\, Horacio Cabarcos\, Maria Graña\, and Victor Lavallen. Estigarribia was awarded the prestigious Gardel Prize in 2015 for Best Tango Recording by a New Artist and is widely recognized as one of the best tango musicians of his generation. \nBorn on the French Riviera in Switzerland\, Adrian Jost first studied the accordion and bayan with the country’s best teachers until coming to the U.S. to pursue his master’s degree at Northwestern University. It was there that Jost discovered Argentine tango and started the transition to the iconic bandoneon. Mandolin\, electric mandolin\, fiddle\, and cello weave melodies\, textures\, and harmonies to create a sound that has been described as cinematic and transportive.\n \nFEATURING:\nAshley Broder – mandolin\, electric mandolin\, fiddle\nBen Schreiber – fiddle\nAria DiSalvio – cello\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nSouthern California-based composer and instrumentalist Ashley Broder is fluent on mandolin (both acoustic and electric)\, violin\, and cello. She crafts melodies\, sonic textures\, and haunting harmonies that distinguish her works easily from the norm. Her original compositions draw inspiration from an eclectic range of genres\, including folk\, jazz\, classical\, pop\, and rock. Classically trained in violin as a child\, Broder discovered the mandolin at age eight\, then took up the cello in college. She has been described as a “mandolin phenomenon” by the San Diego Tribune and is sought after by a wide range of musicians needing to round out their sound. \nBen Schreiber is a contra-dance fiddler and tune-writer\, native to St Louis but currently living in the San Francisco Bay Area. He plays fiddle in several dance bands and is known for his driving energy and lyrical stylings. Schreiber began playing the violin at the age of three and was classically trained. Around the age of 12\, he shifted his focus to folk music. After a brief foray into the world of competitive bluegrass\, he became drawn towards the contra-dance community and eventually formed several local Midwest bands. In addition to contra-dance music\, Schreiber also plays for English Country Dancing and was a member of the klezmer band Yidn. \nAria Disalvio has extensive experience as a performer\, teacher\, and recording artist. She performs regularly with chamber groups including Trio Dagabo and New Music Works\, as well as being a lead cellist in the San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers\, led by master Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser and folk trio One Lane Bridge. The group sings original compositions and presents new interpretations of music from South America\, the Andes\, and Puerto Rico. \nWentworth-Romero Duo shares the night\, playing an eclectic mix of classical\, Latin\, Brazilian\, and global music. He masters several Latin American folk string and wind musical instruments. He started to perform publicly at the zenith of what was later known as the Chilean New Song Movement. After being expelled from Chile by the military dictatorship in 1977\, Torres came to the U.S. as a political refugee. He was a founding member of one of the first South American music ensembles in the Bay Area\, Grupo Raiz. Torres has composed music for theater and film and collaborated with many Bay Area and international musicians such as Pete Seeger and Holly Near. \nBorn and raised in Puerto Rico\, Madeleine Zayas is a Latin American singer/interpreter\, songwriter\, and choreographer based in Oakland. She is the lead singer and artistic muse of the bands with whom she has been performing throughout the Bay Area since 2012. Her singing career began as a duo with Brandon Vance and as co-founder of Buena Trova Social Club. With a love of dance at an early age\, Zayas became a choreographer at age 10 and a professional dancer at age 15. She has performed in theaters and on television in Puerto Rico\, California\, and Nevada since 1985\, and has shared the stage with Inti-Illimani\, Holly Near\, and John Santos. Zayas believes in art and cultural activism as a positive force of communication and a tool for social change. \nDenis Schmidt\, born in Paris\, has been playing South American folk music since the 1970s. After studying this music in Perú\, Bolivia\, and Ecuador\, he came to the Bay Area and started playing with different groups such as Grupo Raíz\, Pueblo Unido\, Canta Tierra\, and Madelina y los Carpinteros. Guitar\, charango\, zampoñas\, and percussions are among the many instruments Schmidt plays. \nCraig Thomas started playing guitar in the 1960s. He has played folk songs in archetypical ‘60s smoke-filled coffee houses and ‘70s West Coast scenes. In the ‘80s and ‘90s\, he joined in on debates on both sides of the question\, “Is jazz a folkloric musical form?” In the 90s\, he started learning to play music from latitudes to the south\, from the Caribbean to South America\, including folkloric music\, popular music\, and Latin jazz. A life-long respect for songs of struggle has connected him with Madelina y los Carpinteros\, with whom he plays string bass and Puerto Rican cuatro. \nFrancisca Wentworth plays flute\, alto flute\, South American pan pipes\, and quena. She began playing at the age of 13\, guided by her grandmother\, world-renowned harpsichordist Alice Ehlers. She later studied with Roger Stevens in Los Angeles and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg\, Austria. While living in London\, Wentworth attended a week-long master class with flute great James Galway. During her travels in Europe\, she performed in Austria and London with various guitarists and in Spain with the Pepe Million Trio. Wentworth has shared the stage with artists including Inti-Illimani\, Pete Seeger\, Holly Near\, and Bonnie Raitt. \nTom Romero is a music teacher at Kehillah’s Jewish High School in Palo Alto\, California. He is an active musician who has been teaching guitar in the wider San Francisco Bay Area for over 15 years. He has a BA in music from California State University\, Long Beach\, where he studied classical guitar with Kurt Schuster. Romero then received his teaching credential and MA in music teaching from Notre Dame University\, where he studied classical guitar with Richard Patterson. Tone-Riordan has recorded and/or performed with some of today’s finest jazz musicians\, including Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Tony Monaco\, Larry Goldings\, Dayna Stephens\, Eddie Marshal\, Mike Clark\, Jarrod Gold\, and many more.   \nOakland-raised Darrell Green has been playing drums for as long as he can remember. In 2005\, He landed a scholarship at the Manhattan School of Music\, where he began a comprehensive study of jazz performance. Shortly thereafter\, he began working with David Weiss\, saxophonists JD Allen and Sherman Irby\, and the Myron Waldon/Daron Barrett Quartet. Green became a sought-after musician for both session work and live shows. Over a career that’s spanned more than two decades\, he has become a master technician and prolific sideman. He has played\, toured\, or recorded with Pharoah Sanders\, Red Holloway\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Steve Turre\, Stefon Harris\, Russell Malone\, James Hurt\, James Zollar\, Brad Leali\, Jesse Davis\, Stacy Dillard\, Sherman Irby\, Faye Carol\, Lavay Smith and the Red Hot Skillet Lickers\, and Jeremy Pelt. Green is one of the most in-demand drummers in New York \, Europe\, and Japan. Though jazz is his primary focus\, he is conversant in every genre from straight-ahead jazz to Latin and West African music. \nDavid Ewell hails from Berkeley\, California\, and graduated from Berkeley High’s nationally renowned music program. He is well known as one of the most reliably hard-grooving bass players in the greater Bay Area music scene. Karr has also spent years performing with several Balkan\, Turkish\, and klezmer folk groups and recorded with the Tumbleweed Wanderers. As an arts administrator\, he served for a year as the Director of Performance Programming at the Red Poppy Art House. He currently directs the Diablo Jazz Company in public and private events.\n \nAaron Kierbel has proudly been a part of the MAPP for the past 15 years\, touring internationally with Rupa and the April Fishes\, as well as locally with Jazz Mafia\, San Francisco Mime Troupe\, and many others.\n \nColm O’Riain\, hailed as a “genius fiddler” by Mike Scott of The Waterboys\, is an Irish-born violinist\, composer\, and an accomplished improviser in multiple genres. In the USA\, where he currently calls home\, he has enthralled audiences on stages as diverse as CBGB’s in New York\, to Fillmore West and Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. He has performed at festivals and venues throughout the world\, from Alaska to Argentina and Sweden to Vietnam. While deeply rooted in the traditions of his native Ireland\, O’Riain’s music constantly looks for connection with other forms. The Irish Herald notes that “O’Riain’s fireworks display of virtuosity easily spans the diverse genres of gypsy\, tango\, jazz\, blues and Irish music\, all with his characteristic intelligence and pizazz.”\n \nKristi Williamson is a multimedia performer born and raised in Maine and now residing in the Bay Area. Her performance work approaches art and healing through movement\, ritual theater\, myth\, and archetype. She currently dances with Anna Halprin’s performance lab and has extensively created\, directed\, and performed original dance theater works on the East Coast. Williamson teaches kundalini yoga throughout the country and is dedicated to bridging performance and the healing arts.\n \nAdrian Arias is a Peruvian international award-winning visual-poet who has been enlivening the local art scene for the last 18 years. His art often includes visual and performance aspects of an accessible lyrical\, emotional\, surreal\, and whimsical nature. Arias is also an acclaimed visual and installation artist\, as well as a cultural promoter.\n \nPrasant Radhakrishnan is a versatile saxophonist steeped in both South Indian classical (Carnatic) and jazz disciplines. The distinct vocal texture of his sound on saxophone\, noted for its expressive complexity and rhythmic ingenuity\, reflects his’s continued study of tradition\, constant innovation\, and vast concert experience over the past 15 years. The foremost disciple of Carnatic saxophone pioneer “Padmashri” Dr. Kadri Gopalnath\, Radhakrishnan began developing his music over the course of nearly a decade of intensive musical training under his guru\, much of which took place in the traditional gurukulam format of complete immersion. The rigor of this training\, followed by the privilege of accompanying his teacher on stage in hundreds of concerts in subsequent years\, fostered a deep understanding of Carnatic music.\n \nMichael Warr is the poetry editor for Of Poetry and Protest: From Emmett Till to Trayvon Martin (W.W. Norton & Company\, 2016). He received a Creative Work Fund Award for his multimedia project Tracing Poetic Memory in Bayview Hunters Point. His poems are being translated into Mandarin by poet Chun Yu in their collaboration Two Languages / One Community. In 2017\, Warr was named a San Francisco Library Laureate. Other awards include a PEN Oakland Josephine Miles Award for Excellence in Literature\, Black Caucus of the American Library Association Award\, Gwendolyn Brooks Significant Illinois Poets Award\, a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship\, and more. Often working with musicians\, visual and performing artists\, Warr’s poems have been dramatized for theater\, depicted on canvas\, and set to original musical composition. For more\, visit here.\n \nTodd Thomas Brown is a multidisciplinary artist and cultural connector immersed equally in his artistic practice as with his organizational work in developing hybrid models of merging small-scale arts-presenting with social networking and community building. He is the founder of San Francisco’s Red Poppy Art House and the Mission Arts & Performance Project (MAPP). With a painting practice in mixed-media\, Brown has participated in artist residencies with the de Young Museum in San Francisco and Residencia el Otro Lado in Chiapas\, Mexico\, and was one of three artists selected to initiate the de Young Museum’s year-long Artist Fellowship Program in 2011\, funded by the James Irvine Foundation. As a performing artist\, he has been awarded grants in disciplines of music and theater from the San Francisco Foundation\, Zellerbach Family Foundation\, and the San Francisco Arts Commission. Brown was recently named to the YBCA 100\, an annual compilation of the creative minds\, makers\, and pioneers that are asking the questions and making the provocations that are propelling new culture-making across the nation. He is presently Project Director and Music Curator for Flying Under the Radar Biennial Festival of the Arts\, an interdisciplinary lab/festival that facilitates collaborative work between artists of the San Francisco Bay Area and Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil. The group draws from Luna’s background in Balkan and Turkish singing and Rodriguez’s background in flamenco dancing to create a new take on these traditions. DESCRIPTION:Multi-instrumentalist Daniel Riera presents the music of Brazilian master guitarist and composer Guinga\, known for his elegant melodies and lush harmonies. His repertoire will be interpreted by a chamber ensemble of winds\, strings\, and percussion. Daniel has studied with Guinga for six years at California Brazil Camp and will bring his arrangements and musical collaborators to the Red Poppy for the first time.\n \nFEATURING:\nTBA\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nDaniel Riera is a multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, arranger\, and bandleader from San Francisco. He was educated at SF School of the Arts and Berklee College of Music in Boston. Riera is most well known as the flutist\, EWI player\, and musical director for Soltron\, a Latin-alternative dance band from San Francisco’s Mission District. Joining the group for the night is bassist Hector Pineda\, well known for his work with the stage show Forever Tango.\n \nFEATURING:\nMariano Barreiro – piano\nSantiago Cursach – guitar\nCharles Gorczynski – bandoneón\nHector Pineda – double bass\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nBased in Buenos Aires\, Tango BC Quartet is a group of professional tango musicians led by pianist Mariano Barreiro and guitarist Santiago Cursach. The band has released two full-length albums and was awarded a grant by the INAMU (National Institute of Music) in Argentina for the second album\, BC Tango Milonguero. They are also winners of the Notable Bars Contest organized by the Ministry of Culture of Buenos Aires.
