The night features two sets of originals and unusual re-inventions through jazz-informed improvisation\, art-funk rhythms\, electronic soundscapes\, and lyrics that deal with America’s darkest open secrets. Joining PC is cellist Alex Kelly\, bassist Bryan Dean\, and special guests including rapper DEM ONE.\n \nFEATURING:\nPC Muñoz – drums\, vocals\nAlex Kelly – cello\, electronics\nBryan Dean – electric bass\nDEM ONE – vocals\nSpecial guests – TBA\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nPC Muñoz‘s body of work includes Grammy-nominated contemporary classical music\, CMJ-charting funk music\, an award-winning haiku CD\, and compositions for film and dance. He has collaborated with rock legend Jackson Browne\, longtime Kronos Quartet cellist Joan Jeanrenaud\, Emmy-winning virtuoso Van-Anh Vo\, and Oakland hip-hop phenom Kev Choice\, among others. Muñoz was a 2013 Equilibrium Fellow at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis\, a 2015 Dresher Ensemble Artist-in-Residence in Oakland\, and his work has been praised by NPR\, Performing Songwriter\, DownBeat\, and more. He is a current governor for the San Francisco chapter of the Recording Academy. DESCRIPTION:Flamenco dancer Melissa Cruz presents a series of vignettes that feature collaborations with diverse artists reflecting her development as a local Bay Area working artist.\n \nFEATURING:\nMelissa Cruz – dance\nAlex Conde – piano\nGregory Masako Jenkins – horns\nMarco Peris – percussion\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nMelissa Cruz is a Bay Area-based flamenco professional and has been a full-time flamenco artist and instructor for the past 14 years. After being exposed to flamenco while studying Spanish at UC Berkeley\, she began dancing with Rosa Montoya and soon thereafter joined Ms. Montoya’s professional company. Apart from frequently performing in theatrical presentations\, Cruz teaches a full weekly schedule of flamenco dance classes and presents consistently in the local flamenco cabaret circuit. She is also the dancer and percussionist for the band LoCura\, with whom she performs and tours. Recently\, she served as adjunct dance faculty at the University of San Francisco\, as a guest instructor at the world dance youth program Danceversity\, and currently presents her own apprentice dance repertory group. Cruz has performed as a soloist in the San Francisco International Arts Festival in 2012 and 2016 and has presented in eight San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festivals. She was commissioned to present a solo representing the genre of flamenco in the 2013 San Francisco Isadora Duncan Awards Ceremony and was a featured artist in the 2014 Tucson Flamenco Festival. Hailing straight from the source and having been steeped in this tradition from birth\, Duo Moldova passionately embodies these traditions\, transporting the audience back to the weddings and the summer nights on the porches where the duo grew up. Through her work\, she explores the relation with the environment by incorporating nature elements as themes and abstract shapes that reaffirm her appeal for flowers and plants. Her artwork highlights a free character with a marked emphasis for colorful patterns\, using gouache and acrylic as mediums.\n \nCellist Misha Khalikulov and pianist Elise Kwon specialize in both classical and non-classical music that incorporates soulful\, elegant\, and sentimental arrangements.\n \nDaniel Riera is a flutist\, bassist\, wind-controllerist\, producer\, composer\, and sound designer from San Francisco. He is active as a stage performer with his jazz quartet\, the Daniel Riera Ensemble\, and groups such as Soltrón\, Blind Willies\, Marcus Cohen and the Congress\, and the Retromaniax. He is also a hip-hop producer with credits including 2013 iTunes chart-topping album Cardboard Castles by Watsky. Riera releases his solo hip-hop/electronic music under the alias Tito Tunes.\n \nA Bay Area native of Vietnamese and French descent\, Camille Mai was born in 1993 and started composing for piano as soon as she could reach the keys. In 2005\, her family moved to Paris\, where she studied composition with pianist Jay Gottlieb and performed with local jazz and pop acts. By the age of 18\, she had recorded two EPs. Now a regular of the San Francisco music scene\, Mai has been featured in venues as diverse as Yerba Buena Gardens Festival\, the SF Conservatory of Music\, Carnaval SF\, Peace Day Fest\, and the Red Poppy Art House where she was a resident artist in 2014 and 2015. In 2015\, she organized a tour of the West Coast with her then-jazz ensemble The View From Bernal Hill. Mai has also been commissioned as a composer for interdisciplinary projects like Día de los Muertos at Davies Hall\, Teobi’s Dreaming\, and 43 Artists for Ayotzinapa.\n \nEqually at home in contemporary styles as they are in the traditional music of their respective home cultures\, San Francisco native Jody Richardson (violin) and Israeli-born David Katz (guitar) play spontaneously erupting music that draws freely from all available sources.\n \nEmad Bonakdar is a composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and performer with a style influenced by his love of traditional Persian music\, coupled with expressive and soulful flamenco music. His first concert in fusion music was in Tehran in 1991\, and his first album\, ARG\, was inspired by the culture of the ancient Persian Empire. He has also composed movie scores including Mom’s Guest. Bonakdar was nominated in New York’s World Music Festival in 2004\, and he performed for a benefit concert for the 2003 Bam (Kerman) earthquake. In the U.S.\, he formed the band Mezghoon with vocalist Mima Goodarz.\n \nMatineh Shaker grew up in Iran and moved to the United States in 2008. She was interested in singing from a very young age and received vocal and piano training in Iran. Later\, she expanded her skills by studying piano and music theory with Tal Zilber from New England Conservatory. Shaker took vocal and solfège lessons along with Persian classical music—radeef—with Shadi Ebrahmi\, and she further fine-tuned her skills with Mojgan Shajarian. She joined Sayeh Ensemble in Boston in 2014\, with the mission of writing and playing Persian classical music for an Iranian audience\, as well as specially familiarizing the non-Iranian audience with such music. She performed as a solo and duet vocalist in numerous events across New England\, from Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts and Harvard Silk Road Project\, to many performances at cultural events in universities and two popular full-feature concerts in Boston. Shaker was a performer in a cross-cultural music company in New York\, Floating Tower\, singing in Farsi alongside musicians from the Middle East and improvising on Persian tunes. She continues to be inspired by the music of cultures from around the world to advance her vocal art.\n \nNima Hafezieh is an Iranian composer and pianist born in 1994 in Iran. His talent in music was found at the age of four\, and he was awarded a piano from the president of Iran at the age of 10. Going to music school at 15\, he was accepted to Tehran Music School to study piano and composition. Hafezieh is currently working as a music transcriber/editor and music education advisor in support of the blind musicians and students with the Association of Blind Students and Graduates in Iran. Elegant\, swinging\, and sophisticated beyond her years\, Gečytė bears comparison with the greats. She has great phrasing\, impeccable timing\, a low velvet voice with smoky hues\, and hits every note on the button. \nRaised in New Jersey\, Gene Perla studied classical piano and trombone. After attending Berklee School\, he moved to New York and performed with Chick Corea\, Miles Davis\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Woody Herman\, Elvin Jones\, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra\, Joni Mitchell\, Buddy Rich\, Sonny Rollins\, Nina Simone\, Frank Sinatra\, and Sarah Vaughan. He runs Studio 401 in Bernal Heights providing recording\, mastering\, and live-sound services. His wife\, Pauline\, is a highly regarded local artist\, and his children\, Chloë and Jody\, are established local musicians.\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nKatia Moraes began performing in the 1980s\, sharing the stage with the high-energy Brazilian band O Espirito da Coisa. Since then\, she has worked with some of the foremost acts around the globe\, including Sergio Mendes\, Airto Moreira\, Oscar Castro-Neves\, Rita Lee\, Elba Ramalho\, Sandy and Junior\, Banda Cheiro de Amor\, George Duke\, Alex Acuña and Justo Almario’s Tolú\, Latin Project\, and Praful. In 1990\, Moraes moved to LA\, where she began working as a voiceover artist in film and television. In 2011\, she created the annual musical entitled Brazilian Heart\, a celebration paying homage to inspiring Brazilian singer-songwriters. He leads his own samba trio where he sings original compositions and plays guitar. His musical influences include Chico Buarque\, Villa-Lobos\, Dilermando Reis\, Adoniran Barbosa\, Manu Chao\, Piazzolla\, Bach\, Flaming Lips\, and Camarón de la Isla. \nAmerican violinist\, mandolinist\, and composer Ted Falcon grew up listening to jazz and the Brazilian music of Villa-Lobos\, Tom Jobim\, and Luiz Bonfá. He has lived and worked as a professional musician in New York City\, Los Angeles\, São Paulo\, and Brasília. Falcon has written and published several books about Brazilian music for the Escola de Choro Raphael Rabello (Clube do Choro)\, the nation’s most respected choro school. He has performed with Hermeto Pascoal\, Dominguinhos\, Armandinho Macêdo\, Thiago Espirito Santo\, Hamilton de Holanda\, and many other incredible Brazilian musicians. In the U.S.\, Falcon has performed alongside David Grisman and Mike Marshall\, and has recorded with Suzanne Vega and Ben E. King. \nRebecca Kleinmann is an acclaimed flutist\, singer\, and composer with a 20-year professional career marked by diversity and improvisation. An explorer at heart\, she rockets and flows between genres\, one day leading The Rebecca Kleinmann Jazz Quartet\, the next day performing with a Brazilian choro ensemble\, and then later at night jamming in flamenco juergas. Kleinmann’s international career has taken her to perform on stages across the globe\, including Melbourne’s International Women in Jazz Festival\, SESC in São Paulo\, Birdland in New York City\, Blue Whale in Los Angeles\, SF Jazz Center\, San Jose Jazz Festival\, Yoshi’s San Francisco and Oakland\, Piedmont Piano\, the Sound Room\, Oracle Arena\, and the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. \nAmi Molinelli is a professional percussionist and educator specializing in Brazilian and Latin percussion\, especially the pandeiro. She is the co-leader of the Brazilian choro and jazz ensemble Grupo Falso Biano\, whose last CD was released in 2017. She has toured with Duo Violao\, which consists of acclaimed seven-string Brazilian guitarist\, composer\, and choro master Rogerio Souza and Edinho Gerber. Estigarribia was awarded the prestigious Gardel Prize in 2015 for Best Tango Recording by a New Artist and is widely recognized as one of the best tango musicians of his generation. \nBorn on the French Riviera in Switzerland\, Adrian Jost first studied the accordion and bayan with the country’s best teachers until coming to the U.S. to pursue his master’s degree at Northwestern University. It was there that Jost discovered Argentine tango and started the transition to the iconic bandoneon. She crafts melodies\, sonic textures\, and haunting harmonies that distinguish her works easily from the norm. Her original compositions draw inspiration from an eclectic range of genres\, including folk\, jazz\, classical\, pop\, and rock. Classically trained in violin as a child\, Broder discovered the mandolin at age eight\, then took up the cello in college. She has been described as a “mandolin phenomenon” by the San Diego Tribune and is sought after by a wide range of musicians needing to round out their sound. \nBen Schreiber is a contra-dance fiddler and tune-writer\, native to St Louis but currently living in the San Francisco Bay Area. He plays fiddle in several dance bands and is known for his driving energy and lyrical stylings. Schreiber began playing the violin at the age of three and was classically trained. Around the age of 12\, he shifted his focus to folk music. After a brief foray into the world of competitive bluegrass\, he became drawn towards the contra-dance community and eventually formed several local Midwest bands. In addition to contra-dance music\, Schreiber also plays for English Country Dancing and was a member of the klezmer band Yidn. \nAria Disalvio has extensive experience as a performer\, teacher\, and recording artist. She performs regularly with chamber groups including Trio Dagabo and New Music Works\, as well as being a lead cellist in the San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers\, led by master Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser and folk trio One Lane Bridge. He masters several Latin American folk string and wind musical instruments. He started to perform publicly at the zenith of what was later known as the Chilean New Song Movement. After being expelled from Chile by the military dictatorship in 1977\, Torres came to the U.S. as a political refugee. He was a founding member of one of the first South American music ensembles in the Bay Area\, Grupo Raiz. Torres has composed music for theater and film and collaborated with many Bay Area and international musicians such as Pete Seeger and Holly Near. \nBorn and raised in Puerto Rico\, Madeleine Zayas is a Latin American singer/interpreter\, songwriter\, and choreographer based in Oakland. She is the lead singer and artistic muse of the bands with whom she has been performing throughout the Bay Area since 2012. Her singing career began as a duo with Brandon Vance and as co-founder of Buena Trova Social Club. With a love of dance at an early age\, Zayas became a choreographer at age 10 and a professional dancer at age 15. She has performed in theaters and on television in Puerto Rico\, California\, and Nevada since 1985\, and has shared the stage with Inti-Illimani\, Holly Near\, and John Santos. Zayas believes in art and cultural activism as a positive force of communication and a tool for social change. \nDenis Schmidt\, born in Paris\, has been playing South American folk music since the 1970s. After studying this music in Perú\, Bolivia\, and Ecuador\, he came to the Bay Area and started playing with different groups such as Grupo Raíz\, Pueblo Unido\, Canta Tierra\, and Madelina y los Carpinteros. Guitar\, charango\, zampoñas\, and percussions are among the many instruments Schmidt plays. \nCraig Thomas started playing guitar in the 1960s. He has played folk songs in archetypical ‘60s smoke-filled coffee houses and ‘70s West Coast scenes. In the ‘80s and ‘90s\, he joined in on debates on both sides of the question\, “Is jazz a folkloric musical form?” In the 90s\, he started learning to play music from latitudes to the south\, from the Caribbean to South America\, including folkloric music\, popular music\, and Latin jazz. A life-long respect for songs of struggle has connected him with Madelina y los Carpinteros\, with whom he plays string bass and Puerto Rican cuatro. \nFrancisca Wentworth plays flute\, alto flute\, South American pan pipes\, and quena. She began playing at the age of 13\, guided by her grandmother\, world-renowned harpsichordist Alice Ehlers. She later studied with Roger Stevens in Los Angeles and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg\, Austria. While living in London\, Wentworth attended a week-long master class with flute great James Galway. During her travels in Europe\, she performed in Austria and London with various guitarists and in Spain with the Pepe Million Trio. Wentworth has shared the stage with artists including Inti-Illimani\, Pete Seeger\, Holly Near\, and Bonnie Raitt. \nTom Romero is a music teacher at Kehillah’s Jewish High School in Palo Alto\, California. He is an active musician who has been teaching guitar in the wider San Francisco Bay Area for over 15 years. He has a BA in music from California State University\, Long Beach\, where he studied classical guitar with Kurt Schuster. Romero then received his teaching credential and MA in music teaching from Notre Dame University\, where he studied classical guitar with Richard Patterson. The trio’s influences range from classical\, jazz\, funk\, rock\, as well as Indian music. Their sound is highly complex\, rhythmically and harmonically\, while always grooving and with an unfailing sense of melody.\n \nFEATURING:\nJacob Szekely – cello\nDennis Hamm – piano\, keyboard\nGene Coye – drums\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nBorn in Brooklyn\, New York\, Jacob Szekely began his studies at age three and grew up in a musical family where his talent was recognized early on. How vulnerable is it to be real? What prevents us from being authentic? What is the challenge to be present for another? How can we empathize with the uncomfortable? \n“Within a simple and respectful structure\, that is based on my practice of Authentic Movement\, I let myself dive into the depths of the subconscious\, to move and be moved. I have no intention to entertain you. I challenge myself to be wholeheartedly real at your presence\, and I challenge you to be active witnesses; because “the soul cannot exist without its other side\, which is always found in a ‘You’ (Jung\, 1954). I surrender to the unknown\, and You become the owners of your experience. I follow my inner impulses and You have the free will to just witness or to participate by ‘making special’. In any case\, we are all co-creators of this collective Alive exploration.”\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nmaria lentzou is an expressive arts therapist and interdisciplinary performing artist originally from Greece. She is the founder of Authentic Movement SF and a lead performance host at the Red Poppy since 2015.
