SUMMARY:Adam Agee & Jon Sousa / Adrianna Ciccone & Colin Cotter: Traditional Irish Fiddle & Guitar
DESCRIPTION:Adam Agee & Jon Sousa are on tour to celebrate the release of their second duo album\, Ceol na gCarad\, which is Irish for “Music of Friendship.” Featuring tunes gathered over the many years of travel in Ireland\, their stage performance is characterized by an uncanny musical intimacy\, allowing for the truest expression of the music to flow through them and through the hearts of all who are present. Adrianna Ciccone and Colin Cotter also team up as a duo for a full evening of fiddle/guitar explorations.\n \nFEATURING:\nAdam Agee – fiddle\nJon Sousa – guitar\nAdrianna Ciccone – fiddle\nColin Cotter – guitar\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nAdam Agee & Jon Sousa have been journeying together through the Irish idiom on fiddle\, guitar\, and tenor banjo\, enchanting listeners on both sides of the Atlantic for over a decade. The Colorado-based duo has put down musical roots in County Clare\, where the two lived together and now make frequent visits. Their connection to their instruments and the transcendent energy in their music captivate and uplift audiences of all ages. (Photo by Nate Shepard) \nOnly a few young Canadian fiddlers today can show off the breadth and range of North American fiddling like Adrianna Ciccone. With a “distinctive stamp and swing that is both rooted and infectious\,” she crosses back and forth across the continent with ease. Ciccone showcases Cape Breton reels\, crooked French-Canadian brandys\, the rollicking rhythms of Ottawa Valley step-dancing tunes\, and way down to Southern Appalachian string band tunes\, all while incorporating Irish and Métis influences. A graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston\, her debut album\, The Back of Winter\, produced by Bruce Molsky\, won Instrumental Solo Artist of the Year at the 2015 Canadian Folk Music Awards. \nColin Cotter picked up the fiddle at the age of four\, beginning a life-long journey building upon several generations of his family’s intimate relationship with traditional Finnish music. Over time\, musical influences from Scotland\, Quebec\, New York City\, and West Africa crept in\, rendering his distinct\, folky sound. A self-taught guitarist\, Cotter has developed an accompaniment style that\, in tandem with his hard-hitting\, poignant songwriting\, bridges the gaps between American and Celtic folk music and rock. \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show\nAdmission: $15-20 door / $15 online. SUMMARY:Arco Belo Ensemble: Chamber Jazz with Global Roots
DESCRIPTION:Arco Belo brings together elements of raw\, contemporary improvised music\, mixing in crisp\, through-composed pockets of sweeping dense harmony and a global rhythmic sensibility. At the Red Poppy\, the group promotes the release of the first single from its debut album\, The Space Between Disguises.\n \nFEATURING:\nSimone Baron – accordion\nLucas Ashby – percussion\nNelson Moneo – violin\nIan Ashby – bass\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nArco Belo is an original chamber-jazz project led by pianist\, accordionist\, and composer Simone Baron\, featuring a rhythm section composed of brothers Lucas and Ian Ashby and Canadian multi-instrumentalist Nelson Moneo. The group skips effortlessly from long-form\, neo-baroque string counterpoint to sludgy hip-hop pads; post-romantic cadenzas collide in moments of spontaneous noise with reedy prepared piano; guttural bow noises and cascading plectrum bring color to plush hypnotic grooves and sharply angled linear phrases. \nLearn more: Facebook \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show\nAdmission: $15-20 sliding scale. SUMMARY:Aallotar / Redwood Tango Ensemble: Transatlantic Chamber Folk & Contemporary Tango
DESCRIPTION:Aallotar’s music is an exploration of one tradition from two perspectives. Violinist/vocalist Sara Pajunen and accordionist/vocalist Teija Niku use their common musical heritage as a starting point for original chamber-folk. Together they create new sounds that reflect their differing contemporary cultures and shared roots. \nPresenting a set of original compositions as well as arrangements of contemporary tango favorites\, Oakland’s Redwood Tango Ensemble also joins the duo for the night.\n \nFEATURING:\nAallotar\nSara Pajunen – violin\, vocals\nTeija Niku – accordion\, vocals \nRedwood Tango Ensemble\nCharles Gorczynski – bandoneón\nElyse Weakley – piano\nMia Bella D’Augelli – violin\nIshtar Hernandez – violin\nAnton Estaniel – cello\nDaniel Fabricant – double bass\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nSince its formation in fall 2013\, Aallotar has made numerous appearances in the U.S. and performed at leading European festivals such as the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival (Finland) and Sounds of the North (Poland). Their lithe instrumentals and beautiful vocal harmonies in both Finnish and English demonstrate how gracefully traditional and contemporary folk music can speak together. With their second album\, Ameriikan laulu (Nordic Notes 2018)\, the ensemble’s distinctive sound is even more adventurous\, elegant\, and profound. \nRedwood Tango Ensemble is a contemporary tango sextet from Oakland\, California. Led by composer and bandoneonist Charles Gorczynski\, the ensemble has developed a signature style and sound within the world of tango composition\, writing honest and imaginative music that challenges conventional notions of genre and musical identity. Redwood Tango Ensemble is a tango group in its lifeblood\, and its sound and sensibility also reach into new music\, chamber music\, and modern jazz. \nLearn more: Aallotar Facebook | Redwood Tango Ensemble Facebook \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show\nAdmission: $20-25 sliding scale.
