SUMMARY:Luminance Ensemble: A Celebration of Concert & Folk Traditions
DESCRIPTION:Harpist Amelia Romano\, joined by trumpeter Matt Ebisuzaki and bassist Tim Renner\, presents an evening of original compositions and arrangements. With influences ranging from South American harp\, symphonic brass\, and odd-meter dance music\, to minimalism\, post-bebop\, and spaghetti western soundtracks\, this intrepid trio finds a song-line under San Francisco’s Mission District and tracks it to the Red Poppy.\n \nFEATURING:\nAmelia Romano – harp\, vocals\nMatt Ebisuzaki – C rotary-valve trumpet\nTim Renner – upright bass\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nBased in San Francisco\, Luminance Ensemble’s music is an original blend of styles drawing from concert and folk traditions. It begins with the electric lever harp of Amelia Romano\, whose playing is rhythmic and dynamic. Enthralled by an intricate muse\, she covers low and high registers with contrapuntal panache. Romano is joined by Matt Ebisuzaki on C rotary-valve trumpet and Tim Renner on upright bass. Luminance Ensemble forges each composition from multiple perspectives\, passing melodies and improvisation from player to player. This is spirited\, creative music from collaborators who encourage each other to push their technical and expressive capabilities. \n  \n \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show\nAdmission: $15-20 sliding scale. SUMMARY:December 1st MAPP @ Red Poppy Art House
DESCRIPTION:Launched in 2003\, the Mission Arts & Performance Project (MAPP) is a homegrown bi-monthly\, multidisciplinary\, intercultural happening that takes place in the Mission District of San Francisco. On the first Saturday of every even month of the year\, the MAPP transforms ordinary spaces\, such as private garages\, gardens\, living rooms\, studios\, street corners\, and small businesses into pop-up performance and exhibition sites for a day/night of intimate-scale artistic and cultural exchange among a kaleidoscope of individuals and communities.\n \nRPAH PROGRAM: \n\n\nTime\nPerformance/Event\nDescription\n\n\n7:05pm – 7:35pm\nAdrian Arias\nDream Number #7\n\n\n7:45pm – 8:10pm\nLewis & Elektra\nCello & Piano Duets\n\n\n8:15pm – 8:40pm\nMauro ffortissimo\nPiazzolla Tangos: Piano\, Melodica\n\n\n8:45pm – 9:10pm\nSAN\nVocal & Body Percussionist\n\n\n9:20pm – 10:00pm\nMark Deutsch\nSoundscape of Solo Bazantar\n\n\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nAdrian Arias is a visual poet from Peru\, living and performing his art in the Bay Area since 1999. He has received much recognition in his different disciplines\, including his work as a poet for which he obtained prizes that culminated in book publications. As a visual artist\, Arias has participated in artist residences with museums\, such as the de Young\, and in international exhibitions\, like the Biennial of Venice and the Ibero-American Biennial. His video-art pieces have been selected and won prizes in San Francisco and Berkeley. \nLewis Patzner is an Oakland-born cellist and composer who plays a variety of styles\, including classical\, jazz\, rock\, and pop. Known for his 11-year stint playing metal with Judgement Day\, Lewis now plays with the Town Quartet\, Cosa Nostra Strings\, Trio Étrange\, the Composer Arranger Performer Orchestra\, and the Proteus Trio. Pianist Elektra Schmidt has been active in the San Francisco Bay area as soloist and as chamber musician for the past nine years. Originally from Athens\, Greece\, she has performed locally\, as well as in the UK\, Greece\, and France. Lewis and Elektra have been collaborating for several years. Their program for the MAPP includes a selection of their favorite repertoire for cello and piano featuring compositions by Bach\, Schumann\, and Piazzolla. \nMauro ffortisimo grew up in Argentina\, where his interest in art and music led him to study classical piano and visual arts. Emigrating to California in 1981 to further his artistic explorations\, he took classes in printmaking\, sculpture\, and painting in numerous academies including San Mateo College\, Art Institute\, and Berkeley Extension. He is a founding member of 849 Folsom Music—a 13-member music and spoken-word performance troupe—as well as the Enso Art Collective and the Miles Davis Memorial Hall. ffortisimo has been investigating sounds with the deconstruction of pianos\, becoming able to expand the 12-tone scale. He does not subscribe to the romantic notion of a solitary artist\, a suffering individual\, hidden in a state of despair\, creating work that only few can appreciate; instead\, he travels the world\, looking to the mundane\, the sacred and the original with the same eyes\, and listening to the music of diverse cultures. \nAfter a childhood spent with the children choir Maitrise de Radio France\, SAN discovered traditional music and singing at the age of 17. She fell in love with Iranian singing\, Portuguese fado\, and Romanian and Bulgarian musical styles. In order to finish her master’s degree in ethnomusicology\, she moved to Bulgaria to learn from singers such as Yanka Rupkina and Svetla Karadjova. After four years spent in Bulgaria and the Balkans\, she returned to France in 2007 and built a career as a singer performing the repertoire of the Balkan region\, singing in groups such as Trio Tzane\, Electrik Gem\, and Sebastien Giniaux Balkan Project. SAN continued to travel across the world—Morocco\, India\, Spain\, Brazil\, and Japan to name a few—and began to write her own music influenced by these cultural experiences. Since 2010\, she has been involved in projects around global music and pluridisciplinarity\, also working with dancers and visual artists. In Brazil\, she discovered body percussion with Pedro Consorte (Stomp) and is fascinated by this new way of expressing herself. SAN’s first album\, Don’t take my head\, was released in 2013\, and she is now preparing her second to be released this spring 2019. \nMark Deutsch’s work as a musician\, inventor\, theoretician\, and philosopher of sound have put him in rare company. He is a visionary artist with a background in nonlinear mathematics\, sacred systems\, and cosmology\, and has extensive experience in orchestral and world music ensembles\, jazz combos\, and solo sitar performance. While studying Indian classical music\, Deutsch began delving deeper into the universal fundamentals of music and its underlying frequency structures. This\, in turn\, inspired him with the desire to develop a new musical instrument that could more audibly reproduce his findings. This work culminated in the creation of the bazantar\, a remarkable instrument that weaves a mesmerizing soundscape of resonance and evokes all the power of Western classical music with the depth and nuance of Eastern traditions\, for which he has been granted an international patent #5883318. His latest work\, The Picasso Tunings\, is a vast revolutionary soundscape of solo bazantar compositions. Maestro Deutsch has recently started teaching at the Yoga Society of San Francisco and the the Resonance Center in Los Angeles. \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:05pm event\nAdmission: Free \nRSVP to the Facebook event:\n \n \n  \nVolunteer for this event!\n\n

SUMMARY:Duo Moldova & Mahala: Moldavian & Romanian Lautari Music (TWO SHOWS)
DESCRIPTION:Moldavian and Romanian traditional music is known for swift\, complex rhythms\, musical improvisation\, and rich\, melodic ornamentation. Traditionally performed by Romani musicians\, the Lautari musical style encompasses soul-wrenching ballads\, high-energy wedding dances\, and village-style tunes. Hailing straight from the source and having been steeped in this tradition from birth\, Duo Moldova passionately embodies these traditions\, transporting the audience back to the weddings and the summer nights on the porches where the duo grew up. Opening the evening is San Francisco-based group Mahala.\n \nFEATURING:\nDuo Moldova\nSergei Popa – accordion\nValy Lautar – violin \nMahala\nAndrew Cohen – accordion\nAnnie Cilley – violin\nBalder ten Cate – cimbalom\nMatt Stein – violin\nTravis Hendrix – upright bass\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nSergiu Popa (Duo Moldova)\, born in Chisinau\, Moldova\, completed his studies at Stefan Neaga College of Music\, as well as two years of studies at the Conservatory of Moldova\, before emigrating to Canada in 2002. Since a young age\, he simultaneously studied traditional folk and Roma styles with his father\, Ion Popa\, himself a well-recognized accordionist in Moldova. Over many years of playing alongside his father at weddings\, he became familiar with Jewish\, Turkish\, Russian\, Serbian\, and Bulgarian styles as well. Despite his young age\, he is quickly establishing a reputation as one of most brilliant accordionists in Canada today. \nValy Lautar (Duo Moldova) also grew up in Chisinau\, where he graduated from the Conservatory of Moldova and collaborated with several Moldavian professional orchestras. He worked for five years as a musician on transatlantic cruise lines before permanently settling in the new world. Lautar currently lives in Montreal\, where he collaborates with Popa and many other local musicians. He specializes in a wide array of musical styles\, including traditional wedding music from Moldova and other parts of Eastern Europe\, as well as classical and “cafe concert” music. \nMahala is a collaborative project bringing together some of the finest musicians from the local Bay Area Balkan music scene. SUMMARY:Follow Your Lead - A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“How can we build a movement if we can’t move together?” \nAs artists\, administrators\, culture workers\, and professionals with “many hats\,” we often learn to lead by necessity without exploring the nuances of leading within diverse communities\, or confronting what it might mean to follow instead of lead. Through the lens of movement and partner dance\, this workshop explores alternate understandings of “leadership\,” core issues of trust\, and the role of regenerative practices in creating a healthy\, sustainable\, and creative life. \nWe’ll use tools and techniques from Argentine tango and salsa rueda\, two highly social dance forms\, to explore leadership\, connection\, power structures\, and the ways in which one moves through the world to affect social change. No dance or leadership experience is necessary. Space is limited! \nThis project is generously supported by Emerging Arts Professionals SF/BA’s MADE Incubator Program. \n \nABOUT THE PRESENTER:\nCristina Ibarra wants to rock your world. She knows the arts are a great way to do this and has dedicated the last 10 years to empowering artists and youth to use their talents and creativity to inspire us all. She’s an enabler. She’s an administrator. She’s an artist. She’s a facilitator. Whether in the space between a dance embrace or a ukulele chord\, behind an office desk or in front of an audience\, Ibarra’s mission is to help people connect with themselves\, the world\, and others around them through the sublime experience of art. \nCurrently Events Manager at the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival in San Francisco\, Ibarra has previously worked with ArtSpan\, Red Poppy Art House\, Mission Arts & Performance Project (MAPP)\, and Oakland-based LATE NITE ART. She is a member of APAP’s Emerging Leadership Institute\, Women of Color in the Arts (WOCA)\, Women’s Audio Mission (WAM)\, and is a past EAP Fellow. In her spare time (yeah right!)\, she enjoys teaching dance\, performing with local musicians\, and exploring the Bay Area. \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 12:45pm doors / 1:00pm event. Latecomers will not be admitted – please arrive on time.\nAdmission: $5 EAP member / $10 general. No one turned away for lack of funds.\nPurchase advance tickets for this event:\n \nRSVP to the Facebook event:\n \n \n  \nVolunteer for this event!\nContact cristinalovesart@gmail.com\n

SUMMARY:Teslim: The 7 Decades Project
DESCRIPTION:Teslim (tes-LEEM) consists of three composers—violinist Kaila Flexer\, multi-instrumental string wizard Gari Hegedus\, and Elana Brutman on Cretan lyra with sympathetic strings—who share a common love of modal music from Turkey and Greece. Joined by percussionist Joshua Mellinger\, the group presents the 7 Decades Project\, which features original compositions by Flexer in honor of her parents\, Abe and Bobbie. \nFlexer’s parents met when they were just 11 years old. Now 83\, the two have been together for over seven decades and continue to be madly in love. Over the years\, Flexer has written many compositions for birthdays and anniversaries\, and more recently pieces about Bobbie’s diagnosis (two years ago) and treatment of Grey Zone Lymphoma. Bobbie has been doing very well for the past year on an experimental drug. Flexer has been honing these pieces and collaboratively arranging them with the ensemble\, and they are thrilled to be sharing these compositions\, as well as works by Brutman and Hegedus.\n \nFEATURING:\nKaila Flexer – violin\, tarhui\nGari Hegedus – oud\, mandocello\, saz\, tarhu\nElana Brutman – Cretan lyra with sympathetic strings\nJosh Mellinger – percussion\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nKaila Flexer is a violinist\, composer\, music educator\, teacher\, producer\, mother\, and plant lover. She has recorded three albums with her groups Third Ear\, Next Village\, and Teslim. Between 1989 and 2013\, Flexer founded and produced Jewish music events Klezmer Mania! and Pomegranates & Figs: A Feast of Jewish Music\, as well as smaller music events. Over the years\, she has performed with various groups including Club Foot Orchestra and Kitka\, as well as with artists such as Shira Kammen\, Ross Daly\, Kelly Thoma\, Hamed Nikpay\, and Hollis Taylor. Flexer can be found teaching and composing in her Oakland studio. \nGari Hegedus plays violin\, viola\, and a variety of lutes from Greece and Turkey\, including laouto\, oud\, and saz. Along with playing in Teslim\, he also performs with global music group Stellamara\, as well as Bay Area groups Janam and The Helladelics. Hegedus has studied with oud master Naseer Shamma and has studied\, recorded\, and performed with Ross Daly and Kelly Thoma. He has toured with the Mevlevi Dervish Order of America and continues to participate in Turkish ceremonial and devotional gatherings around the country. In addition to being a composer and performer\, Hegedus is a talented luthier\, repairing stringed instruments of every variety; coaxing sound from sazes\, violins\, and rebabs; restoring lutes and lyras; making bows; and finding ingenious ways to allow the true voice of an instrument to come forth. \nElana Brutman has dedicated the last several years of her life to the intensive study of the lyra with sympathetic strings\, an instrument which is based on the Cretan lyra and incorporates elements of the Byzantine lyra and Indian sarangi. She has spent the last five summers traveling to Greece to study at Labyrinth\, Ross Daly’s center for modal music instruction and practice\, where she studied with Kelly Thoma and many other master musicians from Greece\, Turkey\, and Iran. \n  \n \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show\nAdmission: $20-25 sliding scale. DESCRIPTION:Bay Area trumpeter/composer Darren Johnston’s newest project for showcasing his songwriting features the distinct instrumentation of two bass clarinets—played by powerhouse composers/improvisers/bandleaders Steven Lugerner and Cory Wright—along with Johnston on trumpet and vocals\, as The Pipes. From short and sweet\, quirky\, groove-based songs to more expansive open improvisations\, they’ve created a new recipe for experimental chamber-folk with a jazz reduction\, telling stories of love and loss\, war and peace\, and how fleeting everyday moments can contain a universe of poetry and the sublime. Also on the bill is local treasure pianist Allison Lovejoy\, who will be performing original works from Bay Area composers\, some classics\, and more.\n \nFEATURING:\nDarren Johnston – trumpet\, vocals\nSteven Lugerner – bass clarinet\nCory Wright – clarinet\, bass clarinet\nAllison Lovejoy – piano\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nSince settling in San Francisco in 1997\, Canada-born trumpeter\, improviser\, composer\, and songwriter Darren Johnston has collaborated and recorded with an extremely diverse cross-section of artists. Wright leads the Green Mitchell and the Cory Wright Outfit. \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show\nAdmission: $15-20 sliding scale. Rules of the Game is a one-act play with music performed by students from the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts who are doing this play to raise awareness about the detention of migrant children and\, where possible\, to raise funds for non-governmental organizations working to help these children. We are trying to use art to promote ethical actions in response to a bad situation. \nOzden Oztoprak and Isik Berfin\, a mother-daughter duo from Turkey’s Zaza-Alevi community\, have a distinct Zaza repertoire of songs stemming from a Sufi spiritual tradition. Rumen “Sali” Shopov is a master Turkish-Romani drummer\, singer\, and string player from Gotse Delchev\, Bulgaria. A charismatic and patient teacher\, Shopov has taught at the Eastern European Folklife Center’s Balkan Music and Dance Workshops\, Berkeley’s JazzSchool\, UC Berkeley\, University of Oregon\, and more. \nEastern Fusion Trio beautifully blends Middle Eastern music with jazz through a distinct combination of instruments. Founded in May 2018\, the members of the trio have all studied various genres of music for decades\, and at the same time\, they have been performing professionally for over 10 years. Their ongoing project\, Eastern Fusion Society\, unites musicians from around the world to play and enjoy music unifying multiple styles and influences. \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:30pm event\nAdmission: Free \nRSVP to the Facebook event:\n \n \n  \nVolunteer for this event!\n\n
