DESCRIPTION:Triism is a jazz trio from Northern California that plays creative arrangements of original compositions\, Balkan folk music\, pop songs\, and jazz standards. Featuring saxophonist Levi Saelua\, bassist Alex Reiff\, and drummer Jim Frink\, their collaborative arrangements often develop from conversations about politics\, pop culture\, science\, and comedy. \nChord Four\, a chord-less Los Angeles-based ensemble\, then takes the stage to perform a wide repertoire heavily influenced by jazz\, as well as the traditional music of Ghana\, Indonesia\, India\, and the Balkans. He has had the opportunity to perform with artists in a wide array of genres\, from jazz to classical and hip-hop to bluegrass. He studied jazz composition and saxophone at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester\, NY\, with composers Bill Dobbins and Dave Rivello\, as well as saxophonists Chien-Kwan Lin\, Jose Encarnacion\, and Charles Pillow. Saelua has performed and/or studied with artists such as Maria Schneider\, Bob Brookmeyer\, Jeff Beal\, Fred Sturm\, Bob Mintzer\, Ryan Truesdell\, and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. He has written\, produced\, and played on albums for groups in California\, Chicago\, and New York\, and has traveled the world performing for audiences in the U.S.\, Australia\, Asia\, and Europe. \nAlex Reiff studied jazz performance at Sacramento State University and has performed with world-class musicians such as Donny McCaslin\, Steve Turre\, Dave Pietro\, Nancy King\, and Wycliffe Gordon. He is featured on numerous Sac State Vocal Jazz and Big Band recordings\, as well as Perseverance by the Alex Jenkins Sound Immersion. Some of his musical influences include Charlie Haden\, Jimmy Garrison\, Wilbur Ware\, Tom Waits\, John Coltrane\, Archie Shepp\, and Wayne Shorter. \nJim Frink started with music at an early age and has played drums professionally since high school. He studied music at UC Santa Cruz\, has performed internationally\, and has played and recorded in a wide variety of styles\, including jazz\, rock\, funk\, country\, pop\, Brazilian\, and Slavic folk music. Along with maintaining a private drum teaching studio\, he has given clinics at the high school and university level as a guest lecturer.\n \nChord Four\nChord Four is an award-winning avant-garde ensemble of improvisers and composers creating original music which balances intricate rhythms and harmonies. She has explored many genres\, from Brazilian bossa nova\, samba\, and Cuban son\, to American jazz\, blues\, and swing. Aside from Maracujá\, Belem sings and plays with Modern Bygones and various local and traveling musicians. She has performed everywhere from living rooms\, to 1\,200-seat concert halls\, to television programs in Barcelona and Brazil. Belem also teaches music through school programs\, private lessons\, workshops\, and summer camps. \nTerrence Rosnagle grew up in the Los Angeles area and was initially inspired by Delta blues to play the guitar. As an adult\, he became fascinated by not only the sound\, but the complex synthesis of African\, European\, and Middle Eastern musical traditions that make up Latin American and Brazilian music. Rosnagle later moved to Spain to study and play flamenco guitar; then to Istanbul to study ud and Turkish music; and eventually to South America to soak up folkloric and Brazilian guitar styles. Adrianna Ciccone and Colin Cotter also team up as a duo for a full evening of fiddle/guitar explorations.\n \nFEATURING:\nAdam Agee – fiddle\nJon Sousa – guitar\nAdrianna Ciccone – fiddle\nColin Cotter – guitar\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nAdam Agee & Jon Sousa have been journeying together through the Irish idiom on fiddle\, guitar\, and tenor banjo\, enchanting listeners on both sides of the Atlantic for over a decade. The Colorado-based duo has put down musical roots in County Clare\, where the two lived together and now make frequent visits. Their connection to their instruments and the transcendent energy in their music captivate and uplift audiences of all ages. (Photo by Nate Shepard) \nOnly a few young Canadian fiddlers today can show off the breadth and range of North American fiddling like Adrianna Ciccone. With a “distinctive stamp and swing that is both rooted and infectious\,” she crosses back and forth across the continent with ease. Ciccone showcases Cape Breton reels\, crooked French-Canadian brandys\, the rollicking rhythms of Ottawa Valley step-dancing tunes\, and way down to Southern Appalachian string band tunes\, all while incorporating Irish and Métis influences. A graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston\, her debut album\, The Back of Winter\, produced by Bruce Molsky\, won Instrumental Solo Artist of the Year at the 2015 Canadian Folk Music Awards. \nColin Cotter picked up the fiddle at the age of four\, beginning a life-long journey building upon several generations of his family’s intimate relationship with traditional Finnish music. His video-art pieces have been selected and won prizes in San Francisco and Berkeley.\n \nFormerly known as Love Songs from Around the World (LSFATW)\, Dina Zarif Ensemble is a collaboration between Dina Zarif\, an Iranian immigrant singer\, and Amelia Romano\, a San Francisco native harpist\, performing a blend of classical and folk music. Their music invites the listener on a journey that combines flamenco and tango-inspired rhythms with Iranian folk tunes in a seamless soundscape of tragedy and triumph through deep concepts of immigration and homeland.\n \nWith a cast of San Francisco’s most diverse musicians\, LoCura mixes Latin styles like rumba flamenca\, Cuban rhythms\, cumbia\, and ska together in a brand they’ve dubbed “califas flamenkito.” Fronted by Spanish-American vocalist Kata Miletich\, LoCura reflects the global mosaic of its home in San Francisco through its distinctive style and brings the members’ experiences to life in its sophomore album\, Semilla Caminante. With lyrics in Spanish and English\, themes range from border issues and immigrant rights to urban life and making another world possible.\n \nRyan Andersen is a singer-songwriter and composer based in San Francisco. His songs explore themes of personal healing\, spirituality\, humanity\, and environmentalism with the aim to inspire listeners and elevate consciousness.\n \nRupa Marya is a composer\, songwriter\, singer\, guitarist\, and leader of the band Rupa & the April Fishes. She grew up in between the San Francisco Bay Area\, Southern France\, and Northern India\, and her compositions span four languages and countless musical idioms\, from French chanson to Colombian cumbia\, from American folk to Indian ghazal. Her music has been used by Giorgio Armani without her permission\, has appeared in NBC’s Parenthood series\, and has been used with her enthusiastic support to further the work of performance artists\, climate activists\, and food sovereignty activists around the world. The LA Times calls her sound “ecstatic and powerfully evocative.”\n \nDos Bandoleros is a Spanish rumba duo founded by Raul Vargas (Makrú) and Muchacho Mandanga (La Mandanga) in the Bay Area. DESCRIPTION:For the first time\, Colm and the band—and regular collaborator\, singer Kate Brubeck—are joined by master Breton musician Thomas Moisson\, one of the most talented accordionists of his generation. Come prepared to hear some magical inter-Celtic fireworks!\n \nFEATURING:\nColm Ó Riain – violin\nGeoff van Lienden – guitar\nJoe Kyle\, Jr – bass\nWade Peterson – percussion\nThomas Moisson – accordion\nKate Brubeck – vocals\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nAn accomplished improviser in multiple genres\, violinist and composer Colm Ó Riain likes to sit on borders\, though not in a way that Homeland Security’s algorithms would recognize. While deeply rooted in the traditions of his native Ireland\, his music constantly looks for connection with other forms—jazz\, blues\, klezmer\, the music cultures of China\, Portugal\, India\, Brazil\, Cuba\, and the Roma diaspora\, to name a few. \nÓ Riain has performed at festivals and venues throughout the world\, from Alaska to Argentina\, Sweden to Vietnam. In the U.S.\, he has enthralled audiences on stages as diverse as CBGB’s in New York to Fillmore West and Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. He has composed music for both film and modern dance performances and acted in Academy Award-nominated film Steve Jobs. Ó Riain has taught in a variety of environments including Visiting Artist residencies at Berklee College of Music and the University of Washington. \n  \n \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show\nAdmission: $20-25 sliding scale.
