SUMMARY:Silhouettes eMOTION: Artist Reception with Carlos Cartagena
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 7\, for the grand reopening of Family Art\, Carlos Cartagena will set up his art tables on the sidewalk and work with children and adults who walk by Red Poppy Art House. He will engage in conversations with neighbors and invite them to become part of the creative process of the silhouette pieces that he is creating. The conversation will focus on the situation with the children who are stuck in Tijuana and for the children who have been separated from their parents and are now in the U.S. border prisons. \nCreating art pieces with the letters that are written\, he will exhibit the final works at Red Poppy Art House for his reception on Saturday\, September 21. These silhouettes—made of plywood and covered with original stories of migrant people\, photos\, documents\, poems\, and original letters—are dedicated to Jakelin Caal and the children held in the prisons at the border. \nLearn more about the exhibition Silhouettes eMOTION here. \n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nCarlos Cartagena was born in El Salvador\, and the formative years of his youth were in the 1980s when his country was beginning to bleed incurably from the wounds of war. A restless desire to make art was always with him\, but initially he opted to undertake a more practical career: studying business administration at the National School of Commerce. \nCartagena was always in direct contact with painting and artists since for generations his family had been in the framing business. This\, as well as the socio-political condition of his country\, induced him\, against all odds\, to abandon his academic career and take up art\, not only as a profession but also as an alternative form of resistance to the oppression of the regime in those years. \nIn November of 1989\, Cartagena came to the United States and started to work with new techniques. First\, he worked with CODICES\, a group of artists working in support of Salvadoran culture\, and then\, for five years\, was part of a group of artists at the KALA Art Institute in Berkeley. There he learned various techniques of etching and printmaking. \nToday he is working independently through painting\, printmaking\, installations\, and mixed media. In 2009\, Cartagena founded a cultural project in his art studio\, No Right Turn Studio. He has had the opportunity to exhibit his work in group shows with well-known artists such as Francisco Toledo\, Claudia Bernardi\, Rupert García\, Enrique Chagoya\, Nathan Oliveira. Since 1993\, Cartagena’s work—in addition to being shown at numerous venues in the Bay Area—has been exhibited in El Salvador\, Mexico\, Japan\, Cuba\, and throughout the United States. \n \nABOUT THE CURATOR:\nChelis López is an award-winning Mexican journalist who has lived in San Francisco since 1996. For almost 10 years\, she hosted the national radio show Línea Abierta at Radio Bilingüe\, the National Latino Public Radio Network where she interviewed and produced diverse stories\, including the live broadcast of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, an annual celebration of communities and cultures in the United States and around the world presented annually in Washington\, D.C. López is the host and producer of two Spanish-language shows on KPOO 89.5FM in San Francisco\, Pájaro Latinoamericano and Andanzas\, where she explores and offers news\, comments\, and interviews with newsmakers and artists throughout Latin America. She is also the San Francisco correspondent for Rompeviento TV in Mexico\, as well as hosts locally at Marin TV. \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm event\nAdmission: Free; donations welcome \nRSVP to the Facebook event:\n \n \n  \nVolunteer for this event!\n\n

SUMMARY:Citizens Jazz: Music of Dizzy Gillespie
DESCRIPTION:Citizens Jazz pays tribute to legendary American jazz trumpeter\, bandleader\, composer\, and singer John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie. Gillespie was a trumpet virtuoso and improviser\, building on the virtuoso style of Roy Eldridge but adding layers of harmonic and rhythmic complexity previously unheard in jazz. In the 1940s\, Gillespie\, with Charlie Parker\, became a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz. He taught and influenced many other musicians\, including trumpeters Miles Davis\, Jon Faddis\, Fats Navarro\, Clifford Brown\, Arturo Sandoval\, Lee Morgan\, Chuck Mangione\, and balladeer Johnny Hartman.\n \nFEATURING:\nRiley Bandy – alto saxophone\nJames Mahone – tenor saxophone\nGrant Levin – piano\nCaroline Chung – upright bass\nMalachi Whitson – drums\n \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nCitizens Jazz is a collective of some of the Bay Area’s best up-and-coming and veteran musicians. Each combo brings a different element of magic that happens in the spontaneity of the language of jazz and improvisation. The group is led by bassist Caroline Chung\, who has been gigging professionally for over a decade playing in bands ranging from jazz and funk to Brazilian and Latin. Chung has studied under the late great Herbie Lewis\, performs regularly in the Bay Area\, and has organized several Bay Area Women in Jazz series at Red Poppy Art House. She has opened up for the Buena Vista Social Club’s last U.S. tour at Mountain Winery\, as well as for Ozomatli at the New Parish with Afro-Latin funk band Sang Matiz.\n \nLearn more: YouTube\nArticle by Andrew Gilbert: Summer Sounds | San Francisco Classical Voice \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show\nAdmission: $15-20 sliding scale. SUMMARY:Los Nadies: Danceable Latin Rock with a Conscience
DESCRIPTION:Los Nadies bring a keen mix of politics\, poetry\, street party\, and musicianship every time they step on to a stage. They play an eclectic combination of highly danceable Latin music with rock.\n \nFEATURING:\nJuan Cuba – lead vocals\, rhythm guitar\nMateo Nube – lead electric guitar\, backup vocals\nMarty Jones – bass guitar\nChris Mayorga – lead & rhythm acoustic guitar\nJosé Vergelin – drums\, cajón\, bongó\, percussion\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nLos Nadies weave together a wide array of Latin American rhythms with rock\, creating a distinct and sophisticated danceable blend that includes rumba flamenca\, cumbia\, Afro-Cuban\, Peruvian and Brazilian music\, reggae\, and South American folklore\, along with poetically and politically charged lyrics. Their music often mirrors and reflects the Latino experience in a globalized U.S.\, with immigrant roots hailing from Argentina\, Bolivia\, Peru\, and the Bay Area. The music is also greatly influenced by Nueva Trova Latinoamericana in the vein of Silvio Rodriguez\, as well as Santana\, Bunburi\, Calamaro\, Bersuit Vergarabat\, and Manu Chao to name just a few. Los Nadies\, or “The Nobodies\,” take their name from the eponymous poem/essay by Uruguayan historian Eduardo Galeano decrying the invisibility cast upon the millions of dispossessed people around the world. As a band\, Los Nadies are proudly committed to social justice as well as to environmental and political awareness\, yet they embrace a spirit of fun\, joy\, and sheer musicianship in every performance. \nFrontman Juan Cuba\, from Peru\, writes most of the songs and brings an inimitable stage presence to the group. Mateo Nube\, from Bolivia\, is the political soul and in-house activist who plays lead electric and acoustic guitar and shares vocal duties. Bay Area native Marty Jones provides the low-end bass grooves to complement Argentinean José Vergelin’s eclectic drums and percussion. Chris Mayorga\, with roots in Nicaragua and the San Francisco Bay Area\, brings his nuanced\, virtuoso solos and rhythmic drive on the electric and acoustic guitar. \nLearn more: Facebook | SoundCloud \n \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show\nAdmission: $15-20 sliding scale. SUMMARY:Sandcatchers / Charming Hostess: Americana & Middle Eastern / Intersection of Voice & Text
DESCRIPTION:NYC-based quartet Sandcatchers blends the Middle Eastern trope of the oud with the dreamy\, Americana-influenced textures of the steel. Featuring original music by bandleader Yoshie Fruchter that is inspired both by maqam and the Appalachian trail\, Sandcatchers is a beautiful collaboration of sound and souls. Led by Jewlia Eisenberg\, the band Charming Hostess shares the night\, exploring the intersection of text and the sounding body.\n \nFEATURING:\nSandcatchers\nYoshie Fruchter – oud\nMyk Freedman – lap steel\nMichael Bates – bass\nMathias Kunzli – drums/percussion \nCharming Hostess\nJewlia Eisenberg – vocals\n(Other musicians TBA)\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nSandcatchers consists Yoshie Fruchter on oud\, Myk Freedman on lap steel\, Michael Bates on bass\, and Shai Wetzer on drums/percussion\, with special guest Erik Friedlander on cello. The ensemble began as a weekly gig in a Brooklyn restaurant and quickly became a focused musical and compositional exploration. The goal of the band has been to establish a sonic combination that is not only pleasing to the ear\, but also challenges notions of how we view musical context. The oud has a deep history in the Middle East and strands of tradition spanning centuries\, while the lap steel is a much younger entity whose sound is still being established. Together\, the instruments have beautiful contrasting timbres but are also unique tools for composition\, forming a combination that is both unparalleled and beautiful. Sandcatchers has performed/recorded with Erik Friedlander\, David Krakauer\, Tim Sparks\, Ben Goldberg\, and has toured all over North America. \nLearn more: Facebook | Bandcamp\n \nCharming Hostess is a whirl of eerie harmony\, hot rhythm\, and radical braininess. Their music explores the intersection of text and the sounding body\, complex ideas expressed physically\, based on voice and vocal percussion\, handclaps and heartbeats\, sex-breath\, and silence. The band lives where diasporas collide\, incorporating piyyutim and Pygmy counterpoint\, doo-wop and niggunim\, and work songs and Torah chanting. \nJewlia Eisenberg is an American musician and composer. As the founder and bandleader of Charming Hostess\, she coined the term “Nerdy-Sexy-Commie-Girly” to describe her genre of music which spans an eclectic range of styles. Originally from New York City\, Eisenberg became an integral member of the San Francisco Bay Area and New York Downtown music scenes in the 1990s and continues to create music in 2019 with her new project with guitarist Jeremiah Lockwood\, Book of J. \n  \n \n \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show\nAdmission: $20-25 sliding scale. On the first Saturday of every even month of the year\, the MAPP transforms ordinary spaces\, such as private garages\, gardens\, living rooms\, studios\, street corners\, and small businesses into pop-up performance and exhibition sites for a day/night of intimate-scale artistic and cultural exchange among a kaleidoscope of individuals and communities. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS\n \nCarlos Cartagena was born in El Salvador. His formative years during his youth were in the 80s when his country was beginning to bleed incurably from the wounds of war. A restless desire to make art was always with him\, and this innate drive—as well as the socio-political condition of his country—induced him\, against all odds\, to abandon an academic career and take up art not only as a profession but also as an alternative form of resistance to the oppressive regime. In November of 1989\, Cartagena came to the U.S. First\, he worked with CODICES\, a group of artists working in support of Salvadoran culture\, and then\, for five years\, with the artists at the KALA Art Institute in Berkeley where he learned techniques of etching and printmaking. Today he is working independently in painting\, printmaking\, installations\, and mixed media. The gentrification of San Francisco knocked on his door in 2016\, and since then has been moving from one place to another.\n \nChile y Limón is a band from San Francisco that plays folk and popular music from Mexico\, Central and South America. For this trio of contagious rhythms\, soaring melodies\, seductive harmonies\, and poetic lyrics\, lead vocalist and flutist Martha Rodriguez-Salazar is joined by accordionist and backup vocalist Jennifer Peringer and bassist Leo Suarez.\n \n \n \nLeticia Hernández-Linares is a poet\, interdisciplinary artist\, and educator. She is the author of Mucha Muchacha (“Too Much Girl”). Widely published\, she has presented her poem-songs throughout the country and in El Salvador. She is a long-time community worker and Mission resident\, and she teaches in the College of Ethnic Studies at SFSU.\n \n \n \nLiliana Herrera is a singer-songwriter\, voiceover artist\, and cultural worker hailing from California’s southern borderlands. Inspired by the indomitable musical spirit of her close-knit family and more than 20 years of artistic collaborations in the Bay Area and beyond—including El Teatro Campesino\, Teatro Sabor\, Golden Gate Opera\, Opera Cultura\, Brava for Women in the Arts\, and La Peña Cultural Center among others—Herrera’s musical roots flourish in the embodiment\, transcendence\, and reflection of the times. Whether it’s velvety torch songs\, scintillating boleros\, sultry blues\, or riveting cumbias\, she sings them with abandon. Her recent recordings include Norte del Rio with Oakland-based cumbia dub band Candelaria and her debut EP\, Late Night Taco Stand Music\, which celebrates the contributions of immigrants and her bicultural spirit inspired by Chicana soul.\n \nFrancisco Herrera is a theologian\, cultural worker\, and singer-songwriter. He has produced seven albums—including two for children’s music in Spanish—and writes scores for film and theater\, working with producers such as Greg Landau\, the late Saul Landau\, and Haskel Wexler. Herrera has shared the stage with Jon Fromer\, Pete Seeger\, Emma’s Revolution at mass actions as School of America’s Watch (up to 22\,000 people)\, and the Battle for Seattle\, with over 250\,000 people shutting down the WTO in 1999. His latest album\, Honor Migrante\, crosses physical and musical borders to expose the grace and beauty of the migrant community with a rocking sound that brings together regional music from Mexico and the U.S.\, as well as a “Chicano soul” style that permeates his eclectic choice of music.\n \nDíaPaSon (“day for son” and Spanish diapasón for “fretboard”) is an ensemble of artists who specialize in Mexican folk music and dance\, particularly the son jarocho. Its artists are active in the rich sonero community of the Bay Area and have collectively and individually studied the son art form with internationally renowned master artists of son jarocho. Under the artistic direction of María de la Rosa\, DíaPaSon promotes and preserves the cultural treasures of Mexico by creating programs and projects that reflect its folkloric traditions. Since 2010\, DíaPaSon—once known as SonRisas—has appeared throughout California\, in Colorado and Mexico\, and has joined the National Performance Network (NPN) touring roster after completion of new works commissioned by the NPN Creation Fund in 2016.\n \nChelis López is an award-winning Mexican journalist who has lived in San Francisco since 1996. For almost ten years she hosted the national radio show Línea Abierta at Radio Bilingüe\, the National Latino Public Radio Network where she interviewed and produced diverse stories including the live broadcast of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, an annual celebration of communities and cultures in the U.S. and around the world presented annually in Washington\, D.C. She is the host and producer of two Spanish-language shows on KPOO 89.5FM in San Francisco—Pájaro Latinoamericano and Andanzas—where she explores and offers news\, comments\, and interviews with newsmakers and artists throughout Latin America. López is also the San Francisco correspondent for Rompeviento TV in Mexico and hosts locally at Marin TV. \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 3:00pm event\nAdmission: Free \nRSVP to the Facebook event:\n \n \n  \nVolunteer for this event!\n\n

They create an intoxicating blend through intertwining melodic grooves\, spirited improvisation\, and songs in two languages.\n \nFEATURING:\nMamadou Sidibe – hunter’s harp (kamale ngoni)\nWalter Strauss – guitar\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nMulti-award-winning composer and musician Mamadou Sidibe plays the West African hunter’s harp\, kamale ngoni\, and is from the Wassoulou region of Mali\, West Africa. He has toured with Malian greats Oumou Sangare\, Coumba Sidibe\, and Toumani Diabate in Africa\, Europe\, and the U.S. Stylus describes “at the center of his music is the same sensibility that you’ll find in Muddy Waters: a sense of music as a tool for the re-creation of everyday life into something special\, even magical.” \nWalter Strauss is a “wizard of the fingerstyle guitar” (Folk and Roots) who weaves elements of American roots and jazz with music from West Africa and other global music traditions. He layers on highly articulated melodies and harmonies\, rhythms and counter-rhythms\, creating an impression he is playing multiple instruments at once. Strauss performs internationally\, both solo and in collaborations\, with artists as varied as Grammy-winning Malian kora player Mamadou Diabate\, American guitarist Alex de Grassi\, and Scottish fiddler Jonny Hardie. \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show\nAdmission: $20-25 sliding scale.
