Flying Under the Radar Presents: The Supplicants – Celestial Frequencies
April 22, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
$10 – $15Flying Under the Radar, in collaboration with the Red Poppy Art House, presents three nights of international performance featuring Symbiosis (directed by Kiandanda Dance Theater & Bahiya Movement) on April 21, The Supplicants – Celestial Frequencies on April 22, and As Três Meninas (curated by Derek Lassiter) on April 23.
Sameer Gupta and David Boyce invite you to embark on a journey across the universe with their duo project, Celestial Frequencies. They offer a glimpse into their sound alchemy of new worlds, ideas and meanings. Through organic improvisations and the pursuit of divine duality, Celestial Frequencies pays sonic homage to the goddess ideal ‒ one of the main tenets of cosmic spiritual music. This is jazz from an unknown planet.
Featuring:
Sameer Gupta – drumset, tabla
David Boyce – tenor/soprano sax, moog synth, efx, beats, basslines
About the Artists:
Sameer Gupta is known as one of the few percussionists simultaneously representing the traditions of American jazz on a drumset and Indian classical music on tabla. He has held workshops on Indian music and cross-over drumming styles at Carnegie Hall Global Encounters, the Jazzschool in Berkeley, and Berklee College of Music in Boston. From bebop to avant-garde jazz, European classical percussion to North Indian classical tabla, Gupta continues to compose and perform music from a multicultural perspective that now bridges several continents.
David Boyce spent his formative years in NYC soaking up the city’s vast multicultural offerings. After being bitten by the jazz bug in elementary school, David began his studies of the saxophone. He graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in Industrial and Labor Relations and taught junior high school in the Bronx before moving to San Francisco. Living in the Bay Area inspired him to pursue music as a full-time obsession. He is a co-founder of his avant jazz group, Broun Fellinis, and is an active freelance musician involved in many musical pursuits that include jazz, post-rock, hip-hop, electronic, improv, and more. David currently performs with Broun Fellinis, 6Roses, The Afro Funk Experience, Black Quarterback, David Mihaly’s Shimmering Leaves Ensemble, The Supplicants, and Black Edgar’s Musik Box.
